I wish the media was on lockdown

I am really sick of some newspapers who are making the current situation much worse .

For example today in the same paper

Why aren’t the government getting on with antibody testing other countries are doing it , its a shambles blah blah blah

Another article . WHO are saying antibody tests don’t work and there is no current proof that people who have had the virus will have antibodies

Also berating the government for failing to get ventilators( btw all medical equipment has to pass vigorous testing before approval )

Next article ... ventilators could be making patients much worse and are of little use .

It’s worse than brexit . Could the papers not use their power for good purposes for a change and promote organisations for example “the love of scrubs” who are actually trying to help the situation to resolve the shortage of PPE for theNHS ?

They are not thinking about politics or why there is a worldwide shortage they are just getting on and helping . Plus we have our furloughed workers volunteering and making 3D visor bands .

Plus there are a lot of companies and labs working on more simple and effective testing , but again it’s not that straightforward and the papers are not reporting on the facts .

If anyone can recommend a paper where I can read truths and not hysterical interpretations of assumptions and falsehoods I would appreciate it .

Rant over

100% agree!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/04/2020 10:53

I must admit, this is the first time I've ever thought that censorship might not always be a bad thing Confused

Fairyliz · 18/04/2020 10:57

Yes totally agree they seem to be enjoying spreading doom and gloom and worst case scenario.

clareOclareO · 18/04/2020 11:00

Unfortunately newspapers cater for the dickheads who buy them to reinforce their own world view. The scary thing is that these people might actually believe the rubbish they spew.

Lundi · 18/04/2020 11:06

This sums up the media perfectly...

The (un)official Coronavirus guidelines:

  1. You MUST NOT leave the house for any reason, but if you have a reason, you can leave the house
  1. Masks are useless at protecting you against the virus, but you may have to wear one because it can save lives, but they may not work, but they may be mandatory, but maybe not
  1. Shops are closed, except those shops that are open
  1. You must not go to work but you can get another job and go to work
  1. You should not go to the Drs or to the hospital unless you have to go there, unless you are too poorly to go there
  1. This virus can kill people, but don’t be scared of it. It can only kill those people who are vulnerable or those people who are not vulnerable people. It’s possible to contain and control it, sometimes, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster
  1. Gloves won't help, but they can still help so wear them sometimes or not
  1. STAY HOME, but it's important to go out
  1. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarkets, but there are many things missing. Sometimes you won’t need loo rolls but you should buy some just in case you need some
  1. The virus has no effect on children except those children it effects

  2. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…

  3. Stay 2 metres away from tigers (see point 11)

  4. You will have many symptoms if your get the virus, but you can also get symptoms without getting the virus, get the virus without having any symptoms or be contagious without having symptoms, or be non contagious with symptoms...

  5. To help protect yourself you should eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand as it's better not to go out shopping

  6. It's important to get fresh air but don't go to parks but go for a walk. But don’t sit down, except if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant or if you’re not old or pregnant but need to sit down. If you do sit down don’t eat your picnic

  7. Don’t visit old people but you have to take care of the old people and bring them food and medication

  8. If you are sick, you can go out when you are better but anyone else in your household can’t go out when you are better unless they need to go out

  9. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house. These deliveries are safe. But groceries you bring back to your house have to be decontaminated outside for 3 hours including Pizza...

  10. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but they can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver

  11. You are safe if you maintain the safe social distance when out but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance

  12. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours ... or four hours... six hours... I mean days, not hours... But it needs a damp environment. Or a cold environment that is warm and dry... in the air, as long as the air is not plastic

  13. Schools are closed so you need to home educate your children, unless you can send them to school because you’re not at home. If you are at home you can home educate your children using various portals and virtual class rooms, unless you have poor internet, or more than one child and only one computer, or you are working from home. Baking cakes can be considered maths, science or art. If you are home educating you can include household chores within their education. If you are home educating you can start drinking at 10am

  14. If you are not home educating children you can also start drinking at 10am

  15. The number of corona related deaths will be announced daily but we don't know how many people are infected as they are only testing those who are almost dead to find out if that's what they will die of… the people who die of corona who aren’t counted won’t be counted

  16. You should stay in locked down until the virus stops infecting people but it will only stop infecting people if we all get infected so it’s important we get infected and some don’t get infected

  17. You can join your neighbours for a street party and turn your music up for an outside disco and your neighbours won’t call the police. People in another street are allowed to call the police about your music

  18. No business will go down due to Coronavirus except those businesses that will go down due to Coronavirus

Brilliant post @Lundi

elQuintoConyo · 18/04/2020 11:19

YABU

I haven't looked at media for a few days. Mostly bullshit, mostly scaremongering, mostly horror stories.

Do I know anyone who's got it?
How long is lockdown going on for?
Is there an exit strategy yet? Can I go outside yet?
Is there a group colllecting homesewn masks and other PPE?

That's all i'm intereted in.

Then i hop on Boredpanda and laugh at a cat being licked by 5 cows Grin

I'm not on MN much these days either, a quick read of a few threads, mostly lighthearted ones (quizzes etc).

CheerfulBunny · 18/04/2020 11:19

Grin @Lundi

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 18/04/2020 11:26

That's great @Lundi

KeepWashingThoseHands · 18/04/2020 11:54

Brilliant @Lundi Grin

I'm very much adhering to #11.

LuvMyBoyz · 18/04/2020 11:54

Loved Lundi’s post.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 18/04/2020 11:54

I mean #12

SusieOwl4 · 18/04/2020 14:10

It’s quite dangerous as well though because people read and believe the bits they want to .we a have all become armchair experts when not even the scientific community have the answers .. ..

I am trying to keep away from it but it’s difficult .

I am snoozing all the papers for 30 days on my Facebook page though . 😀

High quality journalism is absolutely vital at this time. YABU but some journalists need to step up and start holding the government to account. The " now that's a good Friday" headline from the Sun was atrocious - almost 1000 people were reported to have died that day.

SusieOwl4 · 18/04/2020 14:47

Is it not the job of the opposition party to hold the government to account ? Not the media ? Especially when they are not even reporting facts sometimes ?

OP posts:
Theduchessstill · 18/04/2020 15:26

Of course it's the job of both the media AND the opposition to hold the government to account. Certain sections of our media don't do this and don't deal in facts much at all either. Tbf those outlets would be no loss but the entirety of the media in lockdown would obviously be a disaster - but I assume you didn't intend to be taken literally anyway.
