Am I being ripped off ?

We had a joiner round to give us a quote.

£900 for the following:

To fit two shelves in three cupboards (2 airing cupboards and one cupboard downstairs).

2 poles (clothes poles) in two cupboards.

£900?! Aibu?! That seems extortionate?

Does seem a bit spendy.

ExclamationPerfume · 18/04/2020 10:41

Definitely extortionate. I would expect to pay £250 at most.

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 10:42

I know?! He commented a lot on our house - we've just bought it.

I think he saw us coming.

I'm pretty gutted too, because I'm sure a cash in hand job is what he needs rn. But ripping us off isn't going to do it.

Ask on Facebook for a handyman. There are always people asking for small jobs on our local one.

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 10:46

If anyone has a joiner husband or is a joiner, can you let me know if that's expensive?

OP posts:
MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 10:46

It's airing cupboards - hardly fancy!

OP posts:
Serin · 18/04/2020 10:49

That is completely ridiculous.
We had quotes for tree surgery a while back that ranged from £800 to £4k Shock
The £800 company was fully registered and insured.
Same with pest control!! We were once quoted £350 by a national company to remove wasps from our attic, local company quoted £40,
Shop around!!

ladymary86 · 18/04/2020 10:49

My BIL is a joiner. They often overprice jobs they don't want.....

IchWill · 18/04/2020 10:49

Seems expensive. I got two quotes to replace the cupboard door where my electric and gas meters are. Was quoted £500-£600! Shock

A friend recommended I contact Men in Sheds, a local community project that is run as a charity. They did my door for £150.

Google Men in Sheds. There's a part on the website where you put in your postcode to see if you have one near you.

artistformerlyknownas · 18/04/2020 10:51

You can put some shelves and poles up. I believe in you!

AmelieTaylor · 18/04/2020 10:55

🤣🤣🤣🤣 clearly a job he didn't want, but would do, if you were mug enough to pay that!!

ratspeaker · 18/04/2020 10:55

You don't need to accept his quote.
Get others.
Maybe difficult in lockdown

But that does seem a lot.

Do you know you can buy tension poles to act as shelves and clothes rails and fit them yourself.
I have one in my utility cupboard to hang drying clothes up.
Might do in short term
You can also get telescopic curtain rails that could double as clothes rails. ( or I screwed oversized cup hooks into a shelf and put a rail through to act as clothes rail )

Shelving Sort of like this.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 18/04/2020 10:59

I think that is rather high for what sounds like a very basic job. Although depends on details as labour cost will be the bulk of it. Are you asking for slatted shelves, or solid wood with routed rebates? Type of wood as obviously mdf will be far cheaper than solid mahogany, etc.
I would always get 3 quotes, but that may possibly be difficult in current circumstances.

Itwasntme1 · 18/04/2020 10:59

You aren’t being ripped off, you are being dramatic😊.

You were offered a price, you think that price is too high, you say no thank you and shop around.

Jayaywhynot · 18/04/2020 11:01

You can do it yourself, I believe in you too! I have fixed a hole in the ceiling, re tiled the bathroom, laid a new floor in the bathroom, re plastered around the new patio doors, cemented in a new doorstep inside and out and dug a new pond. I'm in my 50's female and used YouTube tutorials, try it, you may surprise yourself

bloodyhellsbellsx · 18/04/2020 11:03

Far too much! There’s a website called my builder where you post a job and tradespeople contact you with their quotes, maybe try that to get some comparisons!

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 11:10

@coffeebeans

Slatted woof and MDF?!

OP posts:
MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 11:11

Can't really get another quote due to circumstances. He did my parents, so don't know why he wouldn't want the job?

I think he thinks we're rich.

OP posts:
MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 11:12

I'm not being dramatic @Itwasntme1

It does my head in when people think because you've got money you should pay more.

OP posts:
Ughmaybenot · 18/04/2020 11:12

He doesn’t want the job, unless you’re daft enough to pay what he’s quoted. I know several tradies who use that ‘technique’

WhyCantIThinkOfAGoodOne · 18/04/2020 11:14

I don't think it sounds crazy for a proper joiner to do a high quality job (no idea if what this guy's offering will actually be to a very high standard or not). You can definitely get a cheaper price though if you just get a handyman in to do it.

Murinae · 18/04/2020 11:14

Far too expensive. Do it yourself.

AlviesMam · 18/04/2020 11:16

My husband said your getting ripped off he's in the trade

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 11:16

The quality would be good!

OP posts:
MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 11:17

@alviesman

Ffs. Ok, thanks.

How do I deal with this now
