Am I being ripped off ?

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 10:37

We had a joiner round to give us a quote.

£900 for the following:

To fit two shelves in three cupboards (2 airing cupboards and one cupboard downstairs).

2 poles (clothes poles) in two cupboards.

£900?! Aibu?! That seems extortionate?

@MamaJules34 where about are you? Sure someone local could recommend a handyman they've used

MamaJules34 · 18/04/2020 14:43

He also put a couple of mirrors up too

You aren’t being ripped off, you are being dramatic

@Itwasntme1 Hmm

The quote is far too high, she's not being dramatic. You're just clearly very easily ripped offGrin

Triggahippy · 18/04/2020 15:11

My oh is a handyman. He would charge £200-250 max

Sparklingplasters · 18/04/2020 15:18

We’ve paid £750 a day for joinery, cash. We got our amazing guy on checkatrade. He has transformed two houses

vanillandhoney · 18/04/2020 15:23

The quote is far too high, she's not being dramatic.

She doesn't have to accept the quote though.

As has been said numerous times, people can charge whatever they like for work. If it's too expensive or not worth it for you, then don't pay it. You're not being held at gunpoint here.

Both DH and I have jobs where we can pick our prices for clients. If a potential client won't pay those prices then that's fine, they're free to go elsewhere aren't they?

Itwasntme1 · 18/04/2020 16:03

@abitoflovely squirrel

You are only ripped off if someone gets money from you. She wasn’t ripped off, she didn’t pay anything. She was given a quote that was clearly too high, she knew it was too high and isn’t employing the trade person. She has Therefore not been ripped off, or robbed or tricked or taken advantage off - all that happed was she got a cheeky quote. Then ensued high drama.

I don’t think I am easily ripped off, I know to get more than one quote. I clearly stated this in my post which I don’t think you read Or understood properly.

longtimecomin · 18/04/2020 16:40

Daylight robbery!! You should always get 3 quotes

Easilyanxious · 18/04/2020 19:06

Sometimes tradesmen do overprice when they don't really want a job especially if fiddly bits or putting someone else's job right
Seems a bit high for what your saying is being done but can't always tell without seeing it maybe there more to it , would get a 2nd quote and compare

Easilyanxious · 18/04/2020 19:09

£20 an hour isn't extortionate though for carpenter / joiner

Easilyanxious · 18/04/2020 19:13

To the poster who said there joiner would do all that for £170 incl materials I want his number as that is cheap
6 shelves and 2 poles most joiners will charge £170 as a day rate

Easilyanxious · 18/04/2020 19:23

Often tradesmen won't charge a half day rate though as where do you think they are going to get another half day from ?
Wrong to assume all builders price on house as my dh was self employed carpenter and always quoted for the job nothing to do with the size of house but often found the richer people wanted something for nothing where as the less well off happy to pay for a good job , but he would always give a breakdown of costs and if customers wanted to source there own goods as long as they used material specified he was fine with that as sometimes people think they can cut corners by getting cheaper product's
Anyway he's told you to find someone else , you've had a quite which you didn't accept so not ripped off although too his quote up
Suggest get a couple new quotes so you can have a comparison as sounds easy job but might be things we are unaware of

alexdgr8 · 18/04/2020 21:58

this is not essential work is it.
why are you having unnecessary people crossing your threshold, against govt guidelines.

Fespital · 18/04/2020 22:23

alexdgr8 RTFT the house has been newly built and is empty.

Poppybeaumydarlinggirl · 18/04/2020 22:28

Absolutely disgusting that price. My hubby is a joiner and if he knew you he would just do it no charge it’s not a hard job.

Holothane · 18/04/2020 22:58

Ouch, try check a trade.com or ask around family or neighbours.

WombatStewForTea · 19/04/2020 10:23

@alexdgr8
Stop making up rules that don't exist. Construction/building work is allowed to continue. Besides the house is unoccupied so social distancing shouldn't be hard Hmm

Itwasntme1 · 19/04/2020 10:29

This thread is weird. Come one further up made up a new law - paying in cash is not illegal😂. Yes the trade person has to declare it and it’s easier to not declare cash.

But there is nothing illegal about paying someone in cash. How do you pay your window cleaner???

coconuttelegraph · 19/04/2020 10:36

*How do you pay your window cleaner???

You've obviously not read any of the many threads about cash becoming obsolete, no one on here pays cash for anything Grin

They all have window cleaners, dog walkers, cleaners and market traders who only take card payments.

Itwasntme1 · 19/04/2020 10:40

But cash isn’t illegal - that’s my point😂😂. If you want to pay someone cash you can.

WombatStewForTea · 19/04/2020 13:47

I paid my window cleaner in cash last week. When he passed me my change he told me he'd washed it all before he came out Grin

YeahWhatevver · 19/04/2020 13:49

Waaaaay overpriced

circusintown · 19/04/2020 13:55

Have you had a bash yourself yet op?

Alwayscheerful · 19/04/2020 19:21

Ask how long it will take and negotiate a day rare. Sounds like a days work, two at most plus materials.
