To be annoyed that Sainsbury’s have sent an email suggesting baking bread!!

Like lots of people I spend lots of time trying and failing to get supermarket food delivery slots.

So Sainsbury’s, my regular pre covid slot, have just emailed with a bake bread email.

I actually regularly bake bread and have been trying for five weeks to get yeast so I can do so.

No supermarket or shop has any yeast.

This is of course lighthearted but aibu to be cross with Sainsbury’s marketing department

I've been shopping in the NHS hour at Sainsbury's since it started and there has been no flour since day 1.

So I don't know how they think I am supposed to bake any bread.

We had a Tesco donation at work of fruit, veg, chocolate and the most prized currency - flour! So I do have a bag of flour but I'm now scared to use it and will prob still be hoarding it when the virus is over.

We’re SW London and have had 25kg bag of 00 Italian flour delivered plus olive oil and pasta etc from a local wholesaler. Flour has been great so far to make sourdough, pancakes and banana bread. Not sure if I can post the link but if anyone wants the info dm me.

HavenDilemma · 18/04/2020 12:14

@Dishwashersaurous Would you like me to post you some of my dried yeast? Happy to :)

HavenDilemma · 18/04/2020 12:15

Mine is in little individual 7g sachets

LivingDeadGirlUK · 18/04/2020 12:25

I've had no issues getting flour or yeast in my weekly Sainsburys delivery. I'm in the North West.

Okidokey · 18/04/2020 12:26

I've just ordered yeast from here www.bakersoriginal.co.uk/
They also suggest how to use plain flour for bread if you can't get bread flour

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 13:51

Funny thing is, there is no flour but loads of bread. Let week I was in my local supermarket and they were giving bread away at the end of the day. They had to bin loads of it. No flour though!

Why aren't people who normally don't bake bread not just buying bread?

Potterspotter · 18/04/2020 14:01

It’s something to do is my guess!

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 14:03

Oki
Thanks for that. I've just ordered some.

freddiethegreat · 18/04/2020 14:08

Thank you for this thread. I am a regular bread (machine) baker & have yeast & bread flour but am so confused which day it is, I had almost forgotten! Now in the machine ...

YinMnBlue · 18/04/2020 15:31

Why aren't people who normally don't bake bread not just buying bread?

If they are like us and trying to steer clear of shops (we go to one supermarket, every 2 weeks) they may not have room in the freezer for enough bread. We wouldn’t have.

BritWifeinUSA · 18/04/2020 16:01

There was a thread recently about flour not being essential. I thought to myself “I’ve seen it all now”. The OP was asking people who are buying all the flour to make play doh and do those twee handprints to please leave some on the shelf for her to use for food. They tore her apart limb from limb! How dare she be doing something frivolous such as baking cakes and making her kids fat when they needed to keep their little darlings entertained and develop their fine motor skills and play doh was a far better use for flour than “bloody cakes”! And baked goods are not essential! The OP never even said she was making cakes with the flour. Could have been pies. Or dumplings. Or pancakes. Or homemade pasta. But what does it matter what she’s making? The haters then admitted they were making necklaces with pasta shapes too. The vitriol against the poor woman who just wanted to cook something was unbelievable.

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 18:39

The OP was probably baking bread for her shielding elderly widow neighbours to make sure they have enough to eat, but even that would not be good enough for many on this site.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/04/2020 19:01

How can you ever argue that making play dough is essential??? What a total waste of a much sought-after cooking ingredient. Let the children do funky things with cornflour instead (that's not in short supply) - far more fascinating.

BTW we managed to source some gram flour and have made some flatbreads to go with our veggie curry for dinner...

spatchcock · 18/04/2020 19:05

You can make yeast in so many different ways! Or a sourdough starter. And you can make yeast free breads too.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/04/2020 19:08

Sure I recall being taught to make a perfectly serviceable yeast free bread in Oz once upon a time?

longtompot · 18/04/2020 19:14

Thank you so much for that link @Okidokey Just bought some yeast as I made loaf with the very last bit of my yeast yesterday Flowers Wine Cake for you as a thank you!

Potterspotter · 18/04/2020 19:31

The beer bread I made was delicious and all scoffed - some of the yeast free breads are great.

Frangipanini · 18/04/2020 19:35

Play dough and it's conscience free cousins are bloomin annoying anyway. All those dried bits of coloured ming that end up everywhere and you know it's been up someone's nose, licked by your dog and god k it's what. They are on evil par with upturned Lego and a bare foot. Play dough is like a greenhouse for germs. Even a drenching with Zaflora couldn't kill the nasties living in a still moist bit of play dough.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 18/04/2020 19:36

Damper is the one I was thinking about!

GrouchyKiwi · 18/04/2020 20:25

My husband couldn't find cornflour in our supermarket yesterday. Anything with the word "flour" in it was gone, baby, gone. (He went so far as to tell me he'd found the label where the cornflour should be, to assure me that he had looked properly.)

I wanted to make cloud dough with the children (conditioner + cornflour). I'm baffled that cornflour is out of stock. Apart from sauces and shortbread, what do people use it for?

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 18/04/2020 21:45

@bettybattenburg Grin A time capsule is about the only thing my awful recipe is good for!

@BritWifeinUSA I saw that thread and the 'kiddie defensive' replies. Decided I couldn't be bothered, it was so completely and utterly ridiculous! Felt sorry for the OP though.

RiftGibbon · 18/04/2020 21:49

No flour or yeast to be had around my way for a month so far.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 18/04/2020 22:09

I've got some on order from a catering wholesaler. Not due till mid May but we do have two bags left. However, I did crack and order a loaf with my farm shop veg and fruit so will trial that and if it's as nice and the ingredients are ok for allergy child, I can relax a bit knowing he'll be ok. Bread is one of his favourite foods. There is not much he willingly eats. Hmm

Ninkanink · 21/04/2020 13:16

Haven’t RTFT but thought I’d mention in case no one else has..

Mills generally have plenty of stock, they just don’t have the infrastructure to supply huge to increases in demand at supermarkets. If you locate your nearest mill (or one further afield if you’re inner city) you will likely be able to purchase big caterer/hospitality bags of flour products. 15kg+ or something like that.
