To be annoyed that Sainsbury’s have sent an email suggesting baking bread!!

Like lots of people I spend lots of time trying and failing to get supermarket food delivery slots.

So Sainsbury’s, my regular pre covid slot, have just emailed with a bake bread email.

I actually regularly bake bread and have been trying for five weeks to get yeast so I can do so.

No supermarket or shop has any yeast.

This is of course lighthearted but aibu to be cross with Sainsbury’s marketing department

(Not L'Hirondelle yeast - they've stopped production due to CV I think)

CurrentBun1981 · 18/04/2020 09:44

Perhaps they're trying to encourage people to use up the mountains of flour they've stockpiled.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 18/04/2020 09:45

If they actually stopped and thought about it we’d get recipe recommendations for “What to cook when you can only get a celeriac, two ageing bananas, and a packet of jammy dodgers”.

There is no flour shortage

There is a flour packaging shortage

Normally most flour is sold in massive bags in bakeries and commercial food production units

Only 12 mills have a packaging line for small household sized bags.

My local bakery is selling flour in sandwich bags
Zero waste shops where you bring your own packaging have flour.
Or can order in large quantities from various bakery suppliers - Lewis Pies will deliver you 16kg flour and 1kg of yeast in a couple of days

ardocam · 18/04/2020 09:50

Try your corner shop for flour, mine has loads

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/04/2020 09:50

My husband bought yeast and flour in Sainsbury's this morning The choice of flour is somewhat depleted though.

Umnoway · 18/04/2020 09:51

Same here, haven’t managed to find yeast for weeks.

Mawbags · 18/04/2020 09:53

But hurry there's only a few left

PhoneLock · 18/04/2020 09:56

I baked two sourdough loaves first thing this morning. Ready for breakfast.

No yeast required. Grin

Making my bag of bread flour last by using alongside plain flour or making flatbreads by hand for lunch/dinners with the plain flour.

Every one of my orders for bread flour in online ordering were taken off the order when I received it. We found bread flour in Sainsbury in person but that was the last one on the shelf.

PhoneLock · 18/04/2020 09:59

I've been using plain flour for bread. It comes out fine.

AJPTaylor · 18/04/2020 09:59

Yeast online at Bakers website.

Mascotte · 18/04/2020 10:00

Ha! This is funny, I got the email and had to delete it sharpish as it made me so cross 😂

Petronius16 · 18/04/2020 10:01

ajandjmum same as us with Waitrose and we're in our eighties!

Made all our bread for years. Any wholemeal loaf needs some white flour - 100gms 400gms wholemeal, though mine is 200 white 300 wholemeal. Needs more water, about 350g. If that's too sticky use any edible oil on hands and work top. No olive oil? Try water.

Sourdough - Andrew Whitley's starter is the simplest to make, though I bung in a few sultanas at the start. Don't worry too much about his temperature advice.

We're self isolating so can't go searching, got enough white flour for three loaves. Been getting it from local Delicatessen, but they got zilch from their last delivery.

Good luck to you all.

CatherineOfAragonsPomegranate · 18/04/2020 10:02

I know what bread is, and I think a bread recipe is great!

But what is flour? I haven't seen any in all the supermarkets, corner shops or online stores I've visited recently.

twilightermummy · 18/04/2020 10:04

I bought bread flour and yeast from eBay yesterday for a ridiculous amount of money. I'm clearly going mad! Also slightly concerned about who is sending it...

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 18/04/2020 10:05

To those looking for yeast, have you tried the firms which used to cater for restaurants, etc. but are now supplying the general public? I got 500g yeast from my local supplier last week. They also have plenty of flour. If anyone is in the extreme south of England and is interested, pm me and I'll give you specific details for this location.

SmallChickBilly · 18/04/2020 10:06

I know I am being unreasonable, but feel quite irritated by them, as loyalty seems to count for nothing.

I appreciate your frustration, but I'm not sure they can legitimately prioritise 'loyal' customers when everyone needs food and those who are most likely to be vulnerable are probably also those who are least likely to have shopped online before.

KenDodd · 18/04/2020 10:06

I've got some yeast OP. If you PM me your address I'll send you some.

PhoneLock · 18/04/2020 10:07

But what is flour? I haven't seen any in all the supermarkets, corner shops or online stores I've visited recently.

I think it must depend on where you live. I've had no problems getting it.

So far!

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 18/04/2020 10:10

I just ordered some yeast from an eBay seller - there's lots on there! Hopefully it won't take too long to arrive. Someone on my street did a bulk order for flour and has shared it out, could you try something like that if your neighbours are also baking?

Witchend · 18/04/2020 10:15

@RubaiyatOfAnyone Grin

I'm another that has 16kg of flour. I got it commercially, because I know someone ordering from a commercial company and asked if they could put that in for me. It cost around £7.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 18/04/2020 10:15

I'm not sure they can legitimately prioritise 'loyal' customers

I love your innocence! That is exactly what Ocado is doing. Some of us, after ten years of regular ordering, are finding we're considered much less valuable than others who apparently ordered more.

Petronius16 · 18/04/2020 10:15

I belong to another forum about food - someone's just posted this:

"For those of you without yeast.
You can make a starter in 48hrs using an apple. Cut up an apple in chunks, skin and pips. Add tap water and a bit of sugar and put in a jam jar.
Leave on the windowsill, and it will develop bubbles over 24 - 48hrs depending how warm it is (like lemonade if you will).

Strain and keep the fizzy water, feed it equal amounts of flour.

Use it as a yeasty starter as you would any bread recipe you use, when it develops surface bubbles.
It may take longer to prove than you are used to tho."

I haven't enough flour to risk it, but it may help someone.
