I’m not into conspiracy theories, but really feel odd about all that’s going on, does anyone else? I’ve also noticed lots of generally fairly level headed friends questioning a lot recently on SM etc.
What is going on, what is it we’re not being told? Or has the whole situation got to me and is making me cuckoo!

Agree that people have a lot more time to think. And things are tense and scary, conspiracy theories are comforting to a lot of people because they suggest everything is carefully controlled and planned by unseen forces - rather than the more likely truth that everything is completely random chaos and we are on our own.

Most likely! There are just so many different opinions out there, enough to make your head spin.

I have 2 pet theories, both of which are as ridiculous as your AIBU

1 = A useless tosser of a prime minister decided that faking a virus would get him better press and so posted the fluff from his belly button to China. Sure enough a terrible virus has ensued enabling him to fake a hospital stay, make a fortune with his toilet paper and wet wipe shares and get him some sympathy. It was just a bonus that some utter thick twats decided to burn down some 5G towers and help get him out of the shit with dear old Don about the U.K. deciding to use Huawei kit.

2 = The man in the moon, you know, the bloke made of cheese caused it because he can.

There are lots of things ‘we are not being told’ - mainly because we wouldn’t be interested in hearing them. For example, the particular ins and outs of a supply part for a ventilator. Relevant, but not the subject of press briefings.

What is it you think is being withheld from you?

I have had to block someone because of their many conspiracy theories; it was starting to affect my mental health.

Other than the 5G nonsense, what are the conspiracy theories? Have been avoiding too much news (feels like self harm) and don’t seem to have any tinfoil hat Facebook friends, sadly!

I feel odd about it.
Every time i leave the house I pinch myself and wonder if this is really happening.
Not because I dont believe it, just because it is so strange and such a break from the norm its hard to get your head around.
I used to serve 1000 people a week as part of a team of 40. Now i see 2 people. Its a shock to the system.
These things happen. I dont know why it has to be a conspiricy.

All make less logical sense to me than plague that we get every 100 years or so.

I'm probably finding things less odd than most because I WFH anyway, and don't have school aged kids.

Actually the oddest thing is the weather, I doubt anyone is blaming the government for lovely spring sunshine.

Here are the ones I've heard:

• America deliberately infected bats with a weaponised corinavirus that they'd made and then released them into China knowing they'd be eaten and people would be infected. It was a plan to destabilise the Chinese economy/government and has backfired

• Bill Gates is behind it all because he wants to sell everyone his corinavirus vaccine. He is secretly evil

• 5G is going to give everyone cancer. Cancer already exists inside all of us but remains dormant unless it gets a signal from your brain to start growing, 5G overrides this signal and makes it grow. There is a cancer vaccine (Bill Gates made it) but it is being kept hush-hush until after 5G is fully online and everyone has cancer then it will be announced and everyone will pay many of thousands of pounds each to get the vaccine

• China had weaponised coronvirus in their lab near Wuhan and it escaped

• A variation on the above, China has weaponised coronvirus in their lab near Wuhan and released it on purpose to destabilise the global economy. Once every country except theirs is in recession they will buy up as many industries as they can

• A secret organisation made up of various world leaders released the virus on purpose to lower the world population

• As above but it was released but done so that people will accept the vaccine which isn't actually a vaccine, it's a mind control chip

• Also as above but there is no vaccine and it's all a plot to bring in a facist world leadership via the backdoor which is why so many countries introduced lockdown laws which will be extended indefinitely

• There is no virus, it's all a ploy to keep us all indoors so that they can change the batteries in the birds / roll out 5G without anyone protesting it / plough through with Brexit without anyone protesting it

It's really poor planning to allow all the birds' batteries run out at the same time, isn't it? I hope they're installing wireless chargers in all the trees now so we don't have to go through this again.

We have been hearing for years about a superbug that will be antibiotic resistant. This isnt a huge stretch from that, is it? I'm sick of the faux woke crowd with their conspiracy shite.

Both sky news and bbc carried stories about investigations that the virus "escaped" from the virology lab in Wuhan. Apparently it's documented public knowledge they were studying coronviruses in bats.

In all seriousness, it is a bit suspicious that there is a virology research centre in Wuhan.

The Sky News article states: "It is thought to be considered highly likely that the novel coronavirus did occur naturally and is not man-made."

And the BBC one says: "a US study of the coronavirus genome published in March found no signs it had been engineered."

Bith articles conclude there is no evidence that it originated in a laboratory.

People, being people, like to look for answers and reasons. The lab near Wuhan gives them a convenient way of satisfying both answer and reason - "it must have been grown in that lab and either escaped or was released on purpose..."

If there was a bat sanctuary near Wuhan they'd be blaming that instead.

@Brogley if they had concluded that the Chinese made it artificially you don't really believe they would have said so publicly, do you? Imagine that...

I think they would have said so. For one, there is no way that several countries would be able to co-operate enough to keep it secret. People always blab. Sometimes it's a whistleblower, sometimes it's a leaked report or an expose by a third party, other times it's a mouthy leader trying to pass the blame on (looking at Trump here). Speaking of passing the blame on, if China had made it artificially then they are responsible and the governments currently getting heat from their citizens about how they're handling the crisis could deflect that heat with some variation in "why are yelling at me? China grew it in a lab, go yell at them... "

No, they wouldn't. East Asian people are getting enough undeserved victimisation as it is without the great unwashed being party to that knowledge; Beijing reacted angrily to Trump merely calling it the Chinese virus so who knows what they'd do if that scenario were made public?

With Trump's attitude towards it do you honestly think he'd keep his bug mouth shut if he had even the tiniest shred of proof that China created the virus?

The one I heard was that it was weaponised and released to stop the Hong Kong riots. Which to be fair it has done
