True, MBP. But you may be making a joke/ being lighthearted about 'children' in general or several 'kids' and then it would come out all wrong if you used the word 'children'...(can't think of an example, right now, sorry!)

My dad used to call us "the troops" as he taught military history. I remember thinking that was the word for a group of children til I learned otherwise

'kiddies' is a bit saccharin - like little Joshie (who is 11) taking is 'moo moo' (muslin cloth) to bed with him. or else it can be old fashioned but quite sweet.

Kiddo's OK innit, quite cute in a not-at-all sacharin sort of way. But 'muzzy' for muslin truly makes me want to vomit.

All that aside, I agree with MaryBleedinPoppins, we did agonise over their names for long enough, unless you've got 5 i can't see why you wouldn't use their names.

I always say 'the kids' , 'children' sounds so pompous! I also say 'the girls', that's what they are after all!

My sister used to call her dc the kiddies. I've no idea why, as my parents never called us 'kids' or 'kiddies'. I sometimes call my adult dc 'the kids - post-modern irony, I think - and we do refer to them as the Grubs from time to time. But I'm of that ilk which cringes at hubby, hun, babba, bean etc.

I don't like it. I used to hate being referred to as a kid when I was a child and now I say it
