AIBU to have put a tent up in the garden just because I WANT TO?

I am bored out of my fucking skull (on the shielding list plus nocturnal teenagers and cats who aren't about in daylight to provide company and entertainment for me, the selfish little fuckers Wink)

It's warm and sunny here. AIBU to have erected a tent in my garden (not one of my big ones, just a little four person one, no separate bedroom pods). It has fairy lights, a big shaggy rug and beanbag chairs etc. I can drag an extension cord out too.

My reasoning is that my DCs who share a room and moan about it, can use it as an extra bedroom, or they can just chill out in it in the day. It can be a change of scenery for me. Plus I just fucking love tents Smile

But this morning I saw my neighbour (big garden, so tent not blocking their light or anything) look at it and laugh while exchanging a comment with their DS.

That's OK. They don't feel the tent love, fair enough although wrong. I know MN loves a tent thread, AIBU to have my tent up?

(DH has "helpfully" suggested I live in it in my own for 12 weeks as an isolation pod Hmm. He also doesn't like tents but I love him so much I married him anyway Wink)

Go for it

LolaSmiles · 17/04/2020 13:40

If you were my neighbour and did that then I would be jealous.

If you had a big family one up that you can stand in I'd still think it was cool.

Bubblysqueak · 17/04/2020 13:42

If I had enough room in my back garden for out tent I would, go for it.

Dreamersandwishers · 17/04/2020 13:42

Sounds lovely! I am jealous. It’s too cold for tents up here in the frozen North.😂

Umnoway · 17/04/2020 13:43

Don’t the shielded group have to stay completely indoors so not even enter the garden? Apologies if this is incorrect, I just know one of DH’s colleagues with severe asthma hasn’t even been in his own garden since lockdown commenced.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/04/2020 13:44

I used to have a bell tent and used to do this.

ECBC · 17/04/2020 13:44

I think it’s great! Sod your neighbours

caramac04 · 17/04/2020 13:44

I want to put a tent up in my garden now. Jealous of the big shaggy rug and fairy lights. I could read and sleep for hours in one 😍

Brooksey5 · 17/04/2020 13:45

Go for it!! Maybe move it around occasionally or you’ll have no grass left 😁 (assuming you’re have grass)

Tonz · 17/04/2020 13:46

Genius! I'm getting my tent out for the kids think we'll camp out tonight for something new and different they're still young so it will be exciting for them. Thanks for the idea 😀

WeBuiltCisCityOnSeeingSouls · 17/04/2020 13:46

Well you are all making me feel smug better Smile I did think someone might come on and berate me for using my garden inappropriately or something Wink

DH has just expanded on his isolation tent pod theory by advising it could be like the end of ET when they put him in a tent Hmm

Bugger your neighbours !! Get in there yourself with a good programme to watch or book to read and enjoy a cuppa !! If we had a garden big enough I'd be doing the same !!!

roundturnandtwohalfhitches · 17/04/2020 13:47

We have had a tent up in our garden for the past week. DS and DH sleep in it. They were even cooking on their trangia last night. We're in Scotland but they are seasoned campers and love it when its freezing. Every day I appreciate how we're lucky to have enough space. Usually I spend the summer moaning about gardening.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/04/2020 13:47

My DDs have been sleeping in various dens they built plus the tent in the garden for about a month now. They have no plans to return to sleeping in their bedrooms until schools reopen. They are 7&8.

ofwarren · 17/04/2020 13:48

I'm jealous! I would definitely do this if I had a tent.

Findingapath · 17/04/2020 13:49

Sounds amazing! Ours wouldn’t fit in the garden properly but we put it up in the living room two weekends ago, complete with fairy lights and diy pretend-campfire, and the kids spent the weekend having a parent-free ‘camping trip’, they thought it was amazing (and now want to do it everyday weekend!!)

Mythica · 17/04/2020 13:49

A mere tent? I've been seriously considering a gazebo. Grin

I think actually having fun at the moment is not really in the spirit of the crisis Hmm Don’t be surprised if you get a call from the fun police.

If I had a garden I would have set a tent up a week ago! Perfect weather for it here. Am jealous! Thankfully I have a little sunny balcony to enjoy Smile

june2007 · 17/04/2020 13:52

I had one up the other day for the kids, but you do you.

LolaSmiles · 17/04/2020 13:53

I heard the law specifically rationed the number of smiles each citizen make in any 12 hour period.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSeeingSouls · 17/04/2020 13:53

@ummnoway yes it's OK to go outside if it's not a shared space. Guidelines actually say

•	try spending time with the windows open to let in the fresh air, arranging space to sit and see a nice view (if possible) and get some natural sunlight, or get out into any private space, keeping at least 2 metres away from your neighbours and household members if you are sitting on your doorstep

So as long as you have the space it's OK. I'm actually so grateful for my garden and really feel for shielding people who can't do this, especially as we never had a garden before this house so I really really appreciate it now.

Loads of people here www.facebook.com/groups/GreatBritishCampout/?ref=share are camping in their gardens, sleeping in caravans and motorhomes on the drive too. Great fun and raising funds for NHS staff.

Jessie9323 · 17/04/2020 13:55

Your neighbour might have been laughing in a good way. We always used to put tents up in our garden and sleep in them it was great! I'd put ours up now but we have a trailer tent 😂

WeBuiltCisCityOnSeeingSouls · 17/04/2020 13:56

God I would love a motorhome. I don't have a driveway or driving licence but I can dream SmileI would love a Mazda Bongo. You can see how much time I have on my hands to have put so much research into something so unlikely to happen Grin
