To assume nice, normal reasonable people look at the box when doing a jigsaw puzzle?

Following a post on FB yesterday when I revealed my new and most excellent jigsaw puzzle assembly command station, a friend, possibly an ex-friend now commented with surprise and alarm about the presence of the jigsaw puzzle box in my photos.

To my own surprise and alarm apparently looking at the box is cheating.

She and her family look at the box briefly before starting and then put it away. They jigsaw blind.

I’m very surprised that this is considered to be normal behaviour.

She did a poll on FB but it’s not really valid is it, what with her friends list containing a cohort of weird non-boxers. It’s a family thing apparently.

Maybe mn can help clarify that she is a giant freak.

I definitely look at the box, I would be there for months otherwise (and have lost interest by then)!

I have a friend like this. She’s militant about it. Looking at the box is cheating and if you’re going to look at the box what’s the point in doing it!?

I'd never do it if I didn't look at the box - I once did a WASGI one where the picture on the box isn't the actual jigsaw - it's just clues - took me weeks and I hated every minute of it

I look at the box. Although I do enjoy the Wasgij ones that are different to the box picture!

I change depending on my mood or how much of a challenge I want.

I don't really jigsaw now as the cat won't allow it

I have voted YANBU but thinking about it when I do an online jigsaw I don’t look at the picture.

I'm definitely a box-looker (and can't vote on the app so feel free to add mine on!).

Also, I would love to see a picture of a jigsaw command station. I have a folding thhingie that gets shoved behind the sideboard.

Depends how big the jigsaw is , 750-1000 pieces and the box is ok , less and it’s not really a challenge for adults .

It probably depends on the jigsaw, or type of picture, or level of experience of the jigsawer. I thought I'd try it without the box, as a challenge. I lasted about 5 minutes. In the end, I barely survived the thing even with the box.

I'm too fast with the box so I get rid of the box for a challenge, and even then I'm fairly fast, I don't go by colour, I go by piece shape!

The picture is on the box for a reason in my opinion.

I am a boxer and pleased to see 97% of mn are!

I suspect back in the mists of time, in this family, a mum at the end of her tether invented this method as a way to keep the kids occupied for even longer. And it's propagated down the generations
