FUCKING CHINESE LANTERNS!!

ANoiseAnnoys · 17/04/2020 11:41

Am posting this in AIBU as I want more people to see it.

I have gone downstairs this morning to find a Chinese lantern stuck in a small tree in my garden! I’m fuming (and I’m usually not an angry person).

Are people so thick?

It could’ve set my house on fire. It could’ve harmed a bird/animal. It’s basically sending litter into the air.

Not to mention the irony of the fact it’s (likely) been set off to “thank” the NHS during the covid crisis - and I’ve just had to don gloves to go and pick up and discard the bloody thing!

Why aren’t people getting the message about the danger of these things?
And what can I do on a personal level, is there a petition I can sign?

I’m in cheshire northeast btw so if you are in my area and set one off last night (it was pink btw)...”YOU ARE AN IDIOT! USE YOUR BRAIN!!”

Rant over.

Agree 100% and think they should be banned. I live rurally and these bloody things kill farm animals every year never mind set fire to land and property. There are hundreds of non destructive ways to remember someone or say thank you. Why on earth do people do this???

Andante57 · 17/04/2020 11:59

I agree - there have been numerous warnings about these things which are a danger to property and animals.
Why haven’t they been banned?

rainbow1982 · 17/04/2020 12:00

I hate them too, ridiculous things 😡😡😡

GCAcademic · 17/04/2020 12:01

Words cannot express the contempt I have for the thick fuckers who set these off.

AuntieMarys · 17/04/2020 12:01

And bloody balloons let off in memory of someone.

dogwithmohican · 17/04/2020 12:02

Agree with all the previous posters - dangerous littering

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 17/04/2020 12:02

Utter contempt from me for the morons who set these things off... attention-seeking, mindless twats! Angry

bettybattenburg · 17/04/2020 12:03

YANBU. Cows and horses (and others) get killed by this awful things. They need to be banned from sale, it's the only way because the muppets who set them off won't understand why it's a bad idea.

IndigoHexagon · 17/04/2020 12:04

Wasn’t a lantern the cause of the Chester zoo fire last year??

Idiots, morons, total twats!

FenceFuckery · 17/04/2020 12:04

The irony also that people at using a Chinese custom to thank the frontliners, for a disease that has originated in China.

Didn’t Chinese lanterns cause that awful fire in a German zoo a few months ago?

billysboy · 17/04/2020 12:05

lots of young lambs out in fields at the moment

uhohimbad · 17/04/2020 12:06

Totally agree!

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 12:07

The utter stupidity of those engaging in a tawdry gesture which can frighten or kill animals is hard to fathom. I also have utter contempt for the companies selling this tatty product.

BrokenBrit · 17/04/2020 12:08

They are absolute abominations that cause horrific damage and death to wildlife and animals, burn down buildings, start fires etc.
I so wish they would be banned and people prosecuted for releasing them.

LolaSmiles · 17/04/2020 12:09

YANBU
Nobody needs to launch burning litter into the sky.

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 12:11

I so wish they would be banned and people prosecuted for releasing them

Well said. They are dangerous, a fire hazard, a threat to animals and the environment. They are part of the arsenal beloved by the meaningless gesture squad.

Theflushedzebra · 17/04/2020 12:14

YADNU - these things are a menace.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 17/04/2020 12:39

Absolutely agree with you

LellyMcKelly · 17/04/2020 12:41

I can’t believe these are still legal - “Let’s send a fire into the sky with no idea of where it will land”. It makes no sense that anyone would want to do that.

Manyminieggs · 17/04/2020 12:44

They've banned them in Wales

Springersrock · 17/04/2020 12:46

YANBU

I hate the bloody things. Council has banned the release of them and balloons on public land but they should be banned full stop

I found one in my horses’ field over Christmas. Fortunately they’re in at night over winter but it still scares me to think what could have happened.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 17/04/2020 13:23

This - I've never understood the mentality of it, I mean doesn't common sense kick in?!
At least you'd think it would!

LakieLady · 17/04/2020 13:27

I'm generally not in favour of banning stuff, but in the case of these monstrosities, even I think they should be banned.

Failing that, bring in a law that anyone who buys them has the word "idiot" tattoed on their forehead before being allowed to buy them.

Hingeandbracket · 17/04/2020 13:53

Sales would increase in many places - free tattoo.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/04/2020 14:02

They are beautiful in flight and many years ago we watched dozens of them one NYE .
But their beauty is not worth the risks to animals or property .
I know they changed the wire to bamboo so it was degradable but still too big a risk.

Definately should be banned .

(Along with Non Organised Event Fireworks )
