To ask my neighbours to remove their wind chimes

They don't just have one, they have at least 6 and its driving me insane, litterally. There's no point us putting our music on to try and drown them out as it would have to be at full volume.

It's so bad that I can't even try and conduct a quiet conversation as I'd have to shout to be heard.

I actually had to take my neighbour's wind chimes down one night (and hide them in my golf bag) as they had woken me up once too often.
Nothing ever got said and they weren't replaced.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/05/2021 08:04

Definitely ask.

My mum loved them and genuinely didn’t even consider that other people find them absolutely awful and irritating until I pointed it out to her.

DeathStare · 28/05/2021 08:08

Please do not snip them. I had wind chimes snipped. They were a gift from someone who had since died - that person had bought them when we moved in as in their culture wind chimes are supposed to ward off evil/protect the house/something like that. We were beyond devastated when they were snipped. If a neighbour had told us they could hear them we would have moved them.

StCharlotte · 28/05/2021 08:19

I think the pitch makes a difference. My neighbour has a "pleasing" one and it's lovely, even in high wind.

SallyCinnabon · 28/05/2021 08:22

I don’t understand why people wouldn’t blast music in the garden but think nothing of wind chimes clattering about 😆

I feel for you OP, I would ask. 6 of them must be unbearable!

BeyondMyWits · 28/05/2021 08:35

I have misophonia. Wind chimes, either tinkly or deep bongy really incite the rage...

My neighbours are wonderful and tolerate my "quirks". A new neighbour put up some chimes when I was at work, and one of the existing neighbours asked them not to... because they knew it would cause me distress... only found out a year after... sometimes people are lovely.

PermanentTemporary · 28/05/2021 08:38

There should be a category of noise nuisance that is about constant but unpredictable noise, even at a low volume. Wind chimes for 5 mins = ok. But I had a friend who became ill, had to be at home more and her neighbours' chimes drove her literally mad. They wouldn't remove them despite very polite requests, not even mediation.

Hope I never move to where fairydust lives.

nancy75 · 28/05/2021 08:46

I have got really awful, noisy, inconsiderate neighbours - After reading this thread I think I might set up a mega wind chime display all around my house 😂

Oh no! Zombies are as maddening as wind chimes... :)
MrsMaizel · 28/05/2021 09:12

Can I do the same thing with my neighbours' dogs ?

JudgeJ · 28/05/2021 09:16

@livefornaps

Just sneak over and snip 'em, then sit back and enjoy the aftermath Grin
Once assumes you feel free to remove anything else that is a minor irritant, their car, children etc! Were vandals to damage my property like that they'd be a dozen times louder. When people object to screeching children hackles rise, but that's MN!
WinterIsGone · 28/05/2021 09:17

I'd like to know now whether the original neighbours took their wind chimes down Grin

unwuthering · 28/05/2021 09:24

@wouldyouadamandeveit

Phew, thanks all. I'll wait till the morning as if I go today I'll like force my way into their garden and remove them myself!!!!
I wouldn't be expecting anyone who has set up six sets of windchimes to be reasonable.
unwuthering · 28/05/2021 09:25

Oh, it's a frigging zombie.

LookItsMeAgain · 28/05/2021 09:27

My ndn (who don't get along with me and I with them) have the tinkly ones hanging up in their garden. They are also the type of neighbour that determines on a warm summers day what music the entire neighbourhood should be listening to (as they play it loud).
They are not the sort of people that I can approach and I don't know if anyone else is annoyed/distracted by these chimes. I don't think I'd be so annoyed if they put them up when they were in their garden and took them down when they went inside again but they leave them up all the time.
Garden centres should not be allowed to sell them unless you can prove that your home is a mansion with at least 12 acres of land and the only thing you'll disturb with the chimes are the cows/sheep in the neighbouring field.
You have my sympathies @wouldyouadamandeveit!

Halloweenrainbow · 28/05/2021 09:32

Windchimes are a nuisance, I sympathise. Everytime it's windy knock on their door and ask them kindly to take them down for a bit. Hopefully they will get sick of you asking and just take them down for good. Hopefully. Good luck!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/05/2021 09:39

I LOVE wind chimes. I wish my neighbours had them. I can't where I live because my house is a wind tunnel - but other neighbours have more secluded gardens and a load of bloody irritating dogs.

Topseyt · 28/05/2021 09:43

Who cares if it's a zombie thread.

I like wind chimes. I have two sets myself, though they are hung inside my house and rarely chime that much because of that. ☹️ Some gardens round here have loads of them hanging outside. They are fine. I've no objection at all. I'd much rather have the sound of wind chimes than loud music or screeching brats children anytime.

I don't see it as an issue though that won't be a popular opinion on here (don't care about that either).

Snuggleworm · 28/05/2021 09:43

Oh no, we have wind chimes. Just one set though. Large wooden ones and they are right down he back near our garage so I hope the neighbours can't hear them. Although their kids are noise pollution x by a gazillion ( that is a story for another thread) and I would much rather listen to my wind chimes.

Although I might just go take them down just in case :)

Don't bother taking them down because MN says so. It isn't the real world.

So many people have wind chimes because they like them and have no objection. There are people on here looking for stuff to get het up over, and choose inconsequential bollocks like this.

roguetomato · 28/05/2021 09:52

They are nice if you live in the middle of nowhere like you see it on films. Totally anti social if in the middle of town/city.

vodkaredbullgirl · 28/05/2021 09:53

I'm thinking of getting wind chimes to annoy my neighbours. Reason as I'm fed up of having to listen to their music. Kids playing football or basketball, can't enjoy the peace in my garden.

Surely it's blatantly obvious your neighbours could hear them.

It really annoys me when neighbours don't bother to take a few seconds of thought as to whether their actions affect their neighbours. It's just rude and inconsiderate.
