Does anyone know what decade this is from?

I found this buried deep in my back garden along with a load of other stuff.

It looks like miners make up from some time ago, it was inside a sellotape tin like the one in the pic attached.

I'm wondering how long it's been down there for, google tells me that the sellotape tins are from the 50s just wondering if anyone can date the make up.

Mary Quant 1960

Divebar · 17/04/2020 00:11

Got to love Pinterest.... the Miners brand pre dates the 80s so there’s nothing to say it’s not older than that. I’d love sleuthing this too.

hadtojoin · 17/04/2020 00:31

I would say 1960's that was when eye liner was really popular and the advert link looks like 1960's rather than 1980's

Tangofandango · 17/04/2020 02:11

My mum's still got one of those tins. She keep small gold safety pins in it. I remember it from early 60s. Miners was around in the 60s as well.

drigon · 17/04/2020 02:37

They were still selling Miners stuff in my local chemist up to about 3 or 4 years ago. I used to buy it as a teen in the 80s, but it definitely goes back further than that.

ElizabethMainwaring · 17/04/2020 03:20

The sellotape is definitely 50s and the miners late 80s. I'm a bit of an expert on packaging design.

hyacinthbouquetsbucket · 17/04/2020 05:07

1970s for the sellotape

Tartyflette · 17/04/2020 05:21

I remember Miners makeup in the 60s. You bought it in Woolies.

ooooohbetty · 17/04/2020 06:23

It's from the 70's, early 80's.

ooooohbetty · 17/04/2020 06:25

I think miners had a different logo in the early 70's from what I remember anyway so it's definitely an example of the lesser spotted later miners make up.

My mum used Miners mascara in the 60s.

Pineappletree33 · 17/04/2020 06:36

I have no idea on dates but I love things like this.

Taddda · 17/04/2020 06:54

We found buried, a really old, whole carpet all folded up, what looks like a takeaway wrapper but can't work out where it's from, what possibly might have been someone's pet in an old shoebox (didn't look too closely), we found a baking tray (that one puzzled me), some plastic bottles and a load of wiring.

Theres a story there....!

Mary baked Bob a lovely roast for dinner......

ElizabethMainwaring · 17/04/2020 08:15

Miners was indeed around in the 60s onwards.
However, you date the item by the typeface and typography used, which in this case is identifiable as late 80s, early 90s.
Credentials: a first in History and Theory of Design, and I used an awful lot of eyeliner in the 80s.

ElizabethMainwaring · 17/04/2020 08:17

In fact, I remember that logo on some lurid little circular pots of green and blue eyeshadow that I bought from Woolworths in Cradley Heath circa 1985.

PancakePattie · 17/04/2020 08:40

Miners makeup was an iconic 1960-70s brand. The eyeliner you have found is from the 1960s.
Compare 1960s and 1970s logos here (and just look at the 1970s prices!)

I remember miners kajal. It was kohl in a little pot that you put on the inners of your eyes with a small plastic stick and made your eyes look really small.

EdithWeston · 17/04/2020 18:20

Miners was 60s and 70s as well as 80s

The sellotape tin would be late 60s early 70s

ElizabethMainwaring · 17/04/2020 18:28

Op. This is so annoying. It is not from the bloody 60s, you can see from the typeface. It is different! They didn't even have liquid eyeliner like that then!

Missingminieggs · 17/04/2020 18:42

Haha ElizabethMainWaring I'd have loved it if it was from the 60s but the 80s probably makes more sense, as I reckon the garden had been landscaped around then.

I really want to know why someone had put some make up in a sellotape tin and buried it in the garden. It's such a random item.

The UKwent metric in 1965.
The Sellotape tin shows old (imperial) measurements plus metric ones. That suggests it's from the (very roughly ) 5 years after 1965, during the time when people were changing over from one measurement system to the other.

TroysMammy · 17/04/2020 19:07

I had my first Miners blue eyeliner pencil in 1981.

florascotia2 · 17/04/2020 19:09

Though of course the tin (perhaps c 1965-1970??) could be older than the make-up. As previous posters have said, sellotape tins were often used to store bits and pieces.

Missingminieggs · 17/04/2020 19:12

Florascott I didn't even notice that about the measurements. Although that wasn't the actual tin but it was exactly the same, just very rusted.

I guessed the tin could have predated the make up.

When ds smashes the tin open we could smell the make up, I wanted to open it but I was afraid it might have gone toxic. Blush
