drspouse · 16/04/2020 10:58

until its proven it is safe to send them back

But what is safe?
Unless the CV is eradicated or there is a 100% successful vaccine, it will never be "safe".
How safe are you, personally, wanting?

JustStayHome · 16/04/2020 11:00

Never going to happen

JemimaPuddleCat · 16/04/2020 11:02

11th of May? Why the random date?

DippyAvocado · 16/04/2020 11:02

*What the government are saying now is guided by what they think their supporters will accept hearing at this particular moment in time.

Governance by public opinion in the middle of a pandemic Hmm? What a good idea.

rosieposies · 16/04/2020 11:02

Yes, but he goes to an independent so his classes are a lot smaller.

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 16/04/2020 11:02

Secondary rather than primary school children. Both are relatively healthy so I presume would cope OK with covid, and no vulnerable close family. It would however mean I wouldn't go and see elderly parents for the duration...

CrocodileFondue · 16/04/2020 11:03

Nope. I'm not risking my vulnerable child for the sake of the economy.

It's not that black and white for most people though, such a hard situation. Sad

KundaliniRising · 16/04/2020 11:03

No way, i am willing to home ed my teenage dcs if it comes down to it.

MrsPear · 16/04/2020 11:05

Yes

We all need normality

Swingingsally · 16/04/2020 11:14

School sucks.

I feel the longer this goes on, the more we learn about the virus.
Nothing is pinned down yet. So it just see this as buying time although nothing may change between now and September except scientists know more than about the virus, how to combat and treat it. How to mitigate effects, to get proper working tests to track and trace.

Ramp up massive testing... Tell us if we have had it, do have it and do we have any immunity?

myself2020 · 16/04/2020 11:17

No soap or proper hot water for hand washing
Food all over tables and floors building up for days/weeks
Shared facilities like pens, pencils, books, computer keyboards that are never wiped down
One cleaner for a primary school with three forms per year
Shared cups and water jugs that are just rinsed with cold water and put away
Staff rooms that are literally never cleaned

seriously???? apart from the shared facilities, a school
not adhering to these basic hygiene rules should be closed immediately!
yuck!

Swingingsally · 16/04/2020 11:17

Dinos I do that sort of thing as well, no social distancing at all. Hygiene even among the people more sensible dc is pretty low! I've seen dc diligently washing hands with gel but merrily swigging from each others drinks bottles the next!!

HoffiCoffi13 · 16/04/2020 11:24

People really need to learn the difference between actual ‘news’, and speculative click bait articles.

LilQueenie · 16/04/2020 11:25

no. I pulled dd out of school a week before it closed.

Appuskidu · 16/04/2020 11:27

Before any one says oh it’s because you can’t wait to get rid of your kids. No it’s not. I love having them around. My son is really struggling not seeing his family and friends and having our normal routine.

Do you think being in large mixed class of different groupings/age groups taught by an unfamiliar teacher/supply (if you’re lucky) or TA which is, in all likelihood what they’ll get if we go back before mid June, will provide that ‘normal routine’?

PicsInRed · 16/04/2020 11:29

@PicsInRed I know you are in the - we should all get it camp

I dont want us all to get it, the issue is that we very very likely all will get it. A vaccine is unlikely (where a vaccine for the common cold?) and a longer lifespan than the last harvest reaches - and actually mass manufacturing 6 billion doses and administering 6 billion times will take longer still.

Unless the world runs out of food first.
We need to get on with it.

Fromthebirdsnest · 16/04/2020 11:34

No I'm shielding they will be home until it's safe , I'm happy to homeschool until then x

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 16/04/2020 11:37

High school year 10 pupil
Possibly if only one or two year groups are in and social distancing can be managed
I don't have primary aged kids and would probably argue for a phased return for them eg years 5 and 6 only initially and spread across the school site and distancing kept in place
I dunno
It's an impossible one to solve as we cannot stay as we are forever

Perdigal · 16/04/2020 11:37

No def not
Healthy Family Member on a ventilator - why take the chance for a short term ?

drspouse · 16/04/2020 12:00

a phased return for them eg years 5 and 6 only initially and spread across the school site and distancing kept in place

It's much more likely to be nursery/EYFS/KS1.
While clearly cleanliness leaves a huge amount to be desired, we are NOT going to be able to expect younger children to be in school and social distancing. There is no way this is going to happen. Smaller numbers each day is doable if it's on a rota/just keyworker children but more keyworkers.

But for any child under, say, 8, it's completely unrealistic to expect they will socially distance from each other or the teachers.

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 16/04/2020 12:09

I have a Yr 5, a Yr 6 and a Yr 10. I'm terrified of them going back so early although I don't like the idea of my yr6 not being able to finish primary school properly and having to go straight to high school. It just seems so quick and why have they cancelled exams when that's when they would start anyway?

DeadbeatDescendant · 16/04/2020 12:10

I wouldn’t as I will have a new born by then (or very nearly) and the last thing I’d want would be Covid19 in the house.

EC22 · 16/04/2020 12:11

I live in a big city.
It seems rushed, i don’t believe there is an appropriate rationale for opening schools so soon.
I think they should wait til August (Scotland).

sweetkitty · 16/04/2020 12:19

I work in a SEN school all my children are at the severe end of the ASD spectrum, all non verbal. Will be impossible to impose any sort of social distancing. A lot of them mouth items as a sensory need, once they are finished we usually take the things away and Milton them at the end of the day. I’m a bit crazy about cleaning my class, I wash most surfaces down at the end of the day, all cups etc disinfected. Not my remit but there’s one cleaner for the whole school. More worried about D&V in the past. We wash hands regularly but a lot of the children lick and spit too they don’t understand.

So from a corona point of view probably best not to reopen but for the children’s mental health I worry about their families as school can be their only respite. It gives the children structure too.

Maybe a phased return a few days a week. There’s 3 adults in my class for 6 children, one of which had a shielding parent living with her. Half our staff were off shielding too so I don’t know how that will impact on safety too.

Personally I can’t see schools going back until the 12 week shielding is up is middle of June then it’s about 2 weeks to the Summer holidays.

HoffiCoffi13 · 16/04/2020 12:21

There also isn’t a definite plan to open schools so soon, despite what the Sun says.
