Also catflu isn’t caused by a coronavirus at all (no such thing as a “covid virus”, by the way). To be honest, when people spout patently untrue things like as “facts” then extrapolate about Covid19’s virulence from them, it doesn’t fill me with much confidence in the rest of their opinions.

DawnBreeze · 16/04/2020 10:42

Sorry, the last sentence in my post should have read

" by the start of the new term in September a test for Corona virus will hopefully be widely available."

Perhaps a bit too confident there.

lljkk · 16/04/2020 10:42

yabu. I think I turned voting off so can't click a button.

corythatwas · 16/04/2020 10:43

We don't know yet if the schools will be going back on the 11th. What the government are saying now is guided by what they think their supporters will accept hearing at this particular moment in time. And the actual date is because they have been able to impose a 3 week extension.

But we have no idea what the death figures will actually be doing in the next few weeks and how that will affect public opinion. All we know is that the current death figures are much higher than originally stated and that consequently there must be more infection around. We have no idea how many NHS staff are going to die or be incapacitated longterm, and in consequence how possible it will be to actually run the new hospital facilities opened. And obviously, high death rates among NHS staff and paramedics will spur on higher death rates among the general population as people who would be able to recover with antibiotics from COVID-related pneumonia will not be able to access care.

One problem is, people keep talking as if there was nothing between death ("mainly affects the elderly and vulnerable") and mild infection that you recover from within a week ("the rest of us").

I have several colleagues, healthy people of working age, who have been ill for several weeks now with this virus and who are by now extremely weak. They don't feature in any statistics as they haven't been in hospital, but they are not going to be able to function in a work environment within the foreseeable future and their bodies may well have suffered irreparable damage. Their jobs will have to be covered by somebody else. Enough such cases and there is no doubt the economy will suffer.

I think the only sensible way to live at the moment is day by day.

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:43

@smileeachday Maybe I should write an article saying some Ministers have said Boris really died and has been replaced by the Lizard King?

Tulipstulips · 16/04/2020 10:46

Yes if we all went back to normal flu will spread like normal

@alloutoffucks Glad you agree. Hence my first point, that getting CoViD19 in June or July is less risky than getting it in autumn or winter, because other respiratory diseases will be more common in winter, thus leading to more competition for critical care beds. Which is why I don’t understand why people would prefer their children to go back to school then.

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:47

@corythatwas Totally agree and very sensible advice.

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 16/04/2020 10:47

No.

HoffiCoffi13 · 16/04/2020 10:48

THATscurryfungeBITCH that article has absolutely no fact base at all. It is speculation, as are all the others.
The government do not know when they will reopen schools. They will have a moveable plan, which will depend on the situation at the time. There is absolutely no point anyone getting their knickers in a twist about something which we have no idea is going to happen.

Fruitsaladjelly · 16/04/2020 10:48

At least I’ll save money on all that Botox ..... I think anxious people also don’t fair well

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:49

And yes I should have said corona viruses not covid viruses. Didn't sleep very well here as I had an ill cat to deal with in the night.

flumposie · 16/04/2020 10:51

I don't think schools will return until June. Our plans at the school I work at are set up until May half term. To be honest I'm fed up of the
constant speculation surrounding schools.

Siennabear · 16/04/2020 10:51

Yes absolutely.

SmileEachDay · 16/04/2020 10:52

Maybe I should write an article saying some Ministers have said Boris really died and has been replaced by the Lizard King?

It would be about as based in reality! 😂

Followthelight99 · 16/04/2020 10:52

No, but I have a child with underlying health issues due to his disability.
I almost lost him to swine flu as a baby in 2010, so absolutely no way he (or my other children) will be going back before mid June at the earliest.
Is that when they are expected to open? 11th May?

Appuskidu · 16/04/2020 10:52

Yes because schools have limited impact on spread and closure was only ever due to political pressure.

Both those points are untrue.

HelpIcantfindaname · 16/04/2020 10:52

I teach at the school my DD is at, I think 11th May is too soon, but I would like her to get back before the end of the summer term as she is in Year 6 & I'd like her to be able to do some of the Year 6 leaving traditions, & some transition days to secondary school.
However, I'm currently non-contact on our school rota as I'm in the flu jab group, so I'd be pretty scared to go back for myself.
That said, the virus will still be here in September & I can't stay off forever.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 16/04/2020 10:53

48/52 lol

pitterpatterrain · 16/04/2020 10:53

Yes

Siennabear · 16/04/2020 10:53

Before any one says oh it’s because you can’t wait to get rid of your kids. No it’s not. I love having them around. My son is really struggling not seeing his family and friends and having our normal routine.

Teenangels · 16/04/2020 10:54

Yes

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:54

@Fruitsaladjelly Like most things, those who are in the middle fair better. Not those who scoff at car seats and think drunk driving is fine as long as you don't get caught, and not those who won't let their 14 year old walk to the local shop alone.
So no unlike some I do not think society is going to break down that we will have widespread looting and rioting and that millions will die.
But neither do I think this is no big deal, we should all just get infected and get back to normal life.

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:56

@SmileEachDay That is what I thought! Would like to see a Black Mirror episode with that premise.

alloutoffucks · 16/04/2020 10:57

@Followthelight99 This date is based on a SUN article that says some ministers say... It is made up and probably click bait because it gets people talking.

DinosApple · 16/04/2020 10:58

I think after May half term would be better. As someone upthread said the longer we distance the more time it gives for scientists to gather information.

I work as a 121 in reception class. It will not be possible to socially distance 4 & 5. 30 children in each classroom.
And being in a class with a potentially asymptomatic child exposing the rest of us to it is a very real worry.

None of the children in class are good at personal hygiene. They might be at home, but even the most diligently taught child forgets when distracted by everything going on at school. Even with frequent reminders from staff.
