Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

Over us *

Troels · 16/04/2020 16:51

One came very low over us twice today and yesterday.

notimagain · 16/04/2020 17:21

Probably survey work. It's a nice day to take photographs. I noticed another one with a similar flight pattern over the Birmingham area earlier. Google has to get its "satellite" images from somewhere

FWIW some of these flights may well be doing more than taking "photographs"...they can be using all sorts of sensors on board aircraft to for example map minor variations in the Earth's magnetic or gravitational field that are of use to the gas/oil/mineral companies because it gives them an insight into what might lie below the surface.

Funnily enough the aviation companies involved in this work tend to be a bit tight lipped about exactly what they are up to....

Someone had posted about this on our local community page too today....was it you 😂
Someone posted this screenshot which might help explain some of them...?

No deffo not me lol but I am finding all the discussion interesting! I typically haven’t seen any today but can hear one right now! Usually around 8/9pm it starts and often into the early hours.

We are in London and are under a bit of a helicopter flight path normally. Fewer small helicopters but a few more military including Chinooks (we see them occasionally anyway).
Fewer police helicopter flights too but that may partly be down to less traffic on the major routes, fewer crashes etc.

Interesting, thanks for the snapshot ...NVIS sounds like an acronym for Night Vision system of some sort and what the source seems to be saying is that before they (the Air ambulance system) can use it, literally, in the field, they need to train at night into previously surveyed and approved landing sites.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 16/04/2020 21:13

south wales here and they are out nightly

I0NA · 16/04/2020 21:30

Night vision imaging system

SynchroSwimmer · 16/04/2020 21:57

There are a lot of RAF transport aircraft doing training flight exercises just now (not associated with Covid they write)

Interesting pictures here:

I am seeing an unusual and very significant number on approach returning at the end of each day here....flights to and from Prestwick, Cardiff, Manchester...

Sassenach85 · 16/04/2020 22:49

So dare I ask? What’s the consensus? Are they doing normal tasks and all above board or anybody feel there’s more to it? Confused

@juls1888 I came on to post the exact same thing you did. I’m Central Scotland too and me and DH were talking about it a couple of nights ago. This then popped up on my FB tonight.

To ask you if helicopters are watching you??
Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 16/04/2020 23:13

Another central Scotland; I thought a chinook was going to land on the roof the other night - whole room was vibrating!

Less helicopters than normal during the day though

Jbck · 16/04/2020 23:17

Fellow Noddytowners thank you solved it for me 😀, Sassenach are you one of us 😂

Hirsutefirs · 16/04/2020 23:17

Unlikely that helicopters are watching you.

More likely to be people in the helicopters.

EustaciaPieface · 16/04/2020 23:23

There’s only one Police Scotland Helicopter in Glasgow/central Scotland area - sadly they are usually out looking for missing persons or following reports of people going into the Clyde. There have been several reports like this in recent weeks.

starlightgazers · 16/04/2020 23:28

Are they doing normal tasks and all above board or anybody feel there’s more to it?

Like what?

MissAnanke · 16/04/2020 23:33

Central Scotland here... I've noticed too.

Help me out here because I'm struggling to understand quite what some people are imagining is going on.

  1. The military are using helicopters to move medically important "stuff" quickly to places they don't normally deliver stuff to...hey presto ...people see more military helicopters
  1. The police are using helicopters as perhaps an efficient way of stopping groups congregating ... hey presto people see more police helicopters.
  1. HEMS are busier than ever (there's an epidemic) it also appears they are doing more night training over built up areas to help them operate over rural areas...hey presto people become aware of HEMS helicopters.
  1. It's quieter...people are perhaps hearing helicopters more frequently than they are used to.
  1. People have suddenly learnt about the flight tracking apps and have suddenly noticed lots helicopters that have always been flying around (e.g; the rig traffic into/out of Aberdeen).

Not really sure why on earth there's any reason to start thinking there's "more to this" than the fact that helicopters can come in very handy when there is a fairly significant major national emergency going on.

LouiseTrees · 16/04/2020 23:51

The answer ...

To ask you if helicopters are watching you??
Jbck · 16/04/2020 23:58

There’s one flying around right now, if we all wave out our window will we see one another?

Sassenach85 · 17/04/2020 02:46

Baby has woken me up and turns out there’s a loud helicopter which has obv woken ds and now it’s all I can hear. It’s unnerving. It feels odd and intrusive. Yeah there are very clear and well explained reasons why I’m suddenly bombarded with bloody helicopters in my area but there’s a pandemic and it’s scary and people don’t always act or think completely rationally. I’m not a crazy conspiracy theorist and I’m not trying to annoy the matter of fact posters stating the facts. I appreciate the info actually it has helped. Do I still have a weird feeling about the helicopter issue .... yes. Is it unfounded? - probably.

Wide awake club here Smile please god let ds go back to sleep .... dd is stirring now Sad

The drone is back over the Channel! Flies from Lydd, which is a tiny airport near me.
