Has anyone noticed helicopters in their area? We have them now day and night - some so low it scared the pets and kids. Some black some yellow some grey. Is this just my area? We all feel unnerved by it a bit Confused

There's a lot less helicopter activity round our way. We're only a few miles from the coast, and there's a major road that has an alarming accident rate just a mile or two away, so we're used to a fair bit of helicopter activity from the coastguard and air ambulance. And the police force here seem to get the chopper out at the slightest excuse.

We haven't heard one since the weekend before lockdown, when the air ambulance landed in the field at the end of our road and stayed there for aboutr 40 minutes.

Totally empty skies here, apart from the occasional chinook, but then we are halfway between two RAF bases.

Ohdeariedear · 16/04/2020 14:02

Two things - firstly, that Red Arrow on FR24! Never seen one before.

Now, helicopters. I’m in central Scotland and hadn’t noticed, but since I first read this thread about an hour ago, two have gone over! First was checking the electricity pylons, second was an army one by the look of it, but that’s quite normal for here. We seem to live under a helicopter flight path, if there is such a thing - when T in the Park used to be on at Kinross, it was non-stop helicopters and also if there’s golf on at Gleneagles it’s the same. We get regular Chinooks too.

Takeyourfaceoff · 16/04/2020 14:05

NE Scotland here. If anything we’ve noticed a reduction in helicopter flights. We’ve got 4 heliports serving the off shore sector. Usually on our morning dog walk we would expect to see an average 1 take off or landing per 2 mins. This morning there were only 7 or 8 choppers in total. We walked for 1.5 hours as usual.

Anybody any thoughts why some areas are markedly less and some more so?

From flight radar 24 right now

To ask you if helicopters are watching you??
LakieLady · 16/04/2020 14:14

@SuperficialSuzie I so wish you hadn't told me about freedar! I can see me wasting loads of time on there now.

I'm sitting in the south-east wondering why a police helicopter is heading towards Dartmoor!

I0NA · 16/04/2020 14:17

Isn’t that a private helicopter @LakieLady ?

It’s a welcome distraction from my annoying teenagers and tedious COVID 19 threads Smile

Shatandfattered · 16/04/2020 14:22

Wondering if you're close to me as I've noticed a huge increase too and I'm in north Ayrshire.

LakieLady · 16/04/2020 14:24

Chinooks are very loud and you hear them coming a long way off

They sound bloody deafening when you're in a tent, on a very quiet woodland campsite, and it's 3 am. We went camping for a the weekend several years ago, and each night several of the noisy fuckers flew over at about 2 or 3 am. The first night it was a novelty. By the 3rd night, I'd have gladly shot them down!

namechanger0989 · 16/04/2020 14:25

Yes, we have one flying round a few times a day

LakieLady · 16/04/2020 14:27

@I0NA, no it's definitely a police one. Call sign is Police09.

Shatandfattered · 16/04/2020 14:28

I've just looked on flight radar and there's currently 12 helicopters all in close proximity off the coast of peterhead

Astressedmumoftwo · 16/04/2020 14:28

Yes. West Midlands

acacac · 16/04/2020 14:29

@Takeyourfaceoff I’m noticing more - I'm barely going 5 minutes without one right over my house.

Kuponut · 16/04/2020 14:30

Nope. Less of the usual copper chopper circling than the norm around here. The local arseholes seem to have swapped car theft and burglary for nicking bikes

IHateMyPassportPhoto · 16/04/2020 14:42

@Lumisade

Look on Freedar and you'll see the military flights. Although the US ones don't give much info.

SmokedGlass · 16/04/2020 14:44

@10NA - I work for a county Air Ambulance and can assure you we are not flying

I0NA · 16/04/2020 14:49

I’m sure you’re right. However I was disputing the poster who claimed that ALL air ambulance in the Uk had been grounded and replaced by cars.

Which would be interesting in the islands

MitziK · 16/04/2020 14:59

Some Air Ambulances are still flying, including (at Easter) the PICU air ambulance coming down from Alderhey to pick up from King's and back again.

I hope that little one is OK.

MitziK · 16/04/2020 15:02

Another one just left Worcester heading NNE, too.

IHateMyPassportPhoto · 16/04/2020 15:05

Our Air Ambulance is still flying. It takes off directly over our house usually.

AvalancheKit · 16/04/2020 15:06

I've just looked on flight radar and there's currently 12 helicopters all in close proximity off the coast of peterhead

That is because they are ferrying crews back and forth to the oil rigs.

Nothing unusual going on in our airspace other than increased training and ground surveying due to the fact air traffic is low.

Shatandfattered · 16/04/2020 15:10

@AvalancheKit I realised that after posting but I've been too busy playing chase the planes to update Blush
