Masks for someone with cerebral palsy

Medicaltextbook · 15/04/2020 22:59

I have cerebral palsy- hemiplegia so weakness down the right ride. Most of normal life is fine. I live in the Uk

At the moment not shopping as living with relatives but usually alone. I know masks are not compulsory now but am trying to plan ahead and keep myself and others safe.

Does anyone know if there are masks that can be relatively easily one handed? I wondered about any MNetters in countries where masks are being required or those with disabilities themselves or relatives?

There will be legal provisions or it will be guidance, but worry some shops/businesses might just exclude me. the cerebral palsy isn’t that obvious so it will look like I can’t be bothered.

Should say “can be used”

I would have thought that the masks with elastic can be put on one handed without too much difficulty. Loop it round one ear, then pull across to loop round the other ear.

I second the elastic ear loop surgical masks for one handed use. The tye ones are not easy with two hands!

Hi... I have CP( Left Hemi too!) I think the elastic could be easily looped behind ears with " good hand" Don't overthink too much, I can manage to ease Hemi hand into a glove, if done very gently, so the hand does not tighten up and go into a fist Take care

Meant to say; if you want to wear protective gloves too

SnagAndChips · 16/04/2020 06:25

I made some and made them with elastic around the back of the head.(as you would wear a dressing up mask)

You can slip them over your head and readjust until its comfortable. I would offer to make you some but I am in Aus and postage is flaky.
this shows ties, but I just sewed elastic on.
Hope you have a friend with a sewing machine who could make some for you.

Thanks
If I can find a mask think I’ll order now. I should be able to put on gloves. Whatever I do will be more to safeguard others as my technique probably won’t help. Most importantly I will maintain distancing and hand washing.
