To think the Tesco 80 item limit is daft?

Doing a weekly food shop for a family of 4, plus getting a few bits for my parents. I’ve easily hit the 80 item limit and so am now going to have to go to a shop to get all the other bits I need which defeats the object of delivery!

AIBU to think 80 items isn’t a huge amount for a family?

Got a slot! Not on the App, but on the website!

Aveisenim · 16/04/2020 04:58

What's really frustrating is that Tesco aren't fully loading the vans. Found out the other week from a driver. How many people aren't getting deliveries because of that?!

SMarie123 · 16/04/2020 06:52

To the people saying ask a neighbour or get a volunteer, how many of you people have volunteered to shop for the families of key workers? How many have thought about your neighbours unless they are obviously elderly?

I don't think it is that easy in op's situation, she doesn't look vulnerable but she is a tough spot. Who is going to put a card through the door of a young fit person? She can't really go shopping with 2 kids the ages that they are?

I am in exactly the same situation and I have asked 2 neighbours I get on well with, one did it but never offered again and I didn't want to be a burden. The other one said she would but then the q was too long outside the store so she left it for that day. I didn't get another offer.

I cant get a Slot for online at all. I end up going to a very small delicatessen and parking right outside the door, locking the kids in the car and supermarket sweeping for 10 mins inside. I hate doing it but what choice do I have?

My husband had his first full day off since the 29th February on Saturday and I went shopping for 3 hours in Tesco. Was it what I wanted to do... definitely not but I had no choice.

People say key workers are hero's but where is the help and support for them?

Myfriendanxiety · 16/04/2020 06:55

I think it depends on the area as I booked this slot on Sunday at 8am and I could have had them at any point during this week.

Myfriendanxiety · 16/04/2020 06:58

@SMarie123 yes that’s exactly like us! I had to self isolate for 14 days a few weeks back as DH had a cough. My neighbour helped with shopping and we ate through the freezer stash as I found it really difficult asking for more than a few items to be picked up.

DH had a Sunday off a while back so I sent him to ALDI for the 9:30am NHS early entry session.

angstridden2 · 16/04/2020 07:03

How are people getting these slots...I was awake on and off all;night trying to get a slot on the site, absolutely none available. Both DH and I in over 70 category although not on the list.

Myfriendanxiety · 16/04/2020 07:21

@angstridden2 I think it very much depends where you live. I looked at 8am on Sunday morning by chance and there were lots available all week. I choose Friday as I wasn’t desperate for much.

Thought this thread would be far more supportive of the supermarket policy. DS2 is up at 3am most days for 4am shifts packing deliveries. Tesco has brought in people from 2.30am everyday to cope just with .com part of service. There's a massive effort going on behind the scenes to get the maximum amount of deliveries out , I wish it was appreciated more. He's so tired, tried to make him feel better saying people are depending on him and grateful - I asked him what the main food item he noticed was ...alcohol 😕

TooLittleTooLate80 · 16/04/2020 07:40

I recall the pomegranate thread from the other day about the same topic and the response was an overwhelming YABU. Interesting that because the OP has put it in calmer tones that the vote is reversed.

That said, there obviously has to be a limit to ensure they can deliver to as many people as possible in one trip and so I still think YABU whilst understanding your frustrations. Hopefully the solutions suggested above help.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 16/04/2020 07:41

Its a pain. We are a family of 7!

Hanamuslim · 16/04/2020 07:44

Thank god asda don't do it, however it is 3 maximum per item. I have a family of six, so for example i was going to do chicken char grills with potatoes, I would have to buy 3 of the boxes of 6 rather than the boxes of 2. One each isn't enough for me and then I have enough left over for a salad the next day. I prefer asda to Tesco. Have noticed I can buy more. And asda is cheaper with more variety.

lyralalala · 16/04/2020 07:49

@TooLittleTooLate80 If that poor OP hadn’t mentioned the pomegranate she’d have got the same response. For some unfathomable reason people descended on here like a pack of hyenas. It was hideous.

Big families are often looked down on on here. Even in the circumstances such as that OP’s.

onanothertrain · 16/04/2020 08:00

It's only on online shops, I'd imagine to maximise the number of deliveries they can make and to reduce the number of people shopping for friends and family. Either go to the shop which I think you should do if you're not shielding or stop shopping for other people.

Butterymuffin · 16/04/2020 08:05

@nolassie please thank your DS for what he's doing. It is appreciated, but you always get moans about something. I have been thanking all the delivery drivers but I get that the store staff don't receive that.

Big families are often looked down on on here.

I don't look down on big families. I get irritated by fussy families. Lots of moaning here about can't get bananas, can't get individual yoghurts - so buy something else! It's not hard, you won't starve, it's just that you can't have everything you want at the moment. Buying multi pack lemons isn't a human right.

AlternativePerspective · 16/04/2020 08:05

The OP on that thread was ripped apart so viciously that she de-registered.

Tesco have a number you can call to be added to their priority deliveries if you’re vulnerable and I attempted to DM it to her but couldn’t so contacted HQ to ask if they could pass it on and she had de-regg’ed by then.

I actually think that Tesco are the best out of all the supermarkets. Sainsburys won’t allow you to book a slot at all if you’re not on the government list, and the government list itself is a farce because people who shouldn’t be on it are and are now getting phone calls from their GP’s to say they were added accidentally, and people who should be on it can’t get registered.

There has to be a cut-off somewhere and for the most part 80 items should be enough if you e.g. buy in bigger packs so a 3 kg pack of pasta, bigger packs of meat etc.

Also if you’re shopping for others then you need to make it clear that there has to be a limit.

I texted my eXH yesterday to see if they needed anything as I have a delivery slot booked but I emphasised that as there is an 80 item limit. He had had a delivery recently so didn’t need anything.

I would say that if you’re shopping for elderly parents you should get them to ring Tesco and be added to their priority list. You don’t have to be on the government database to do that. That way you can get your full shop and they can get a delivery in their own right.

Iceland are another one who have fairly regular slots available, also for vulnerable people which you have to tick a box for, and Ocado apparently have next day slots available after 6 PM, although I appreciate that Ocado are expensive.

Jellycatfox · 16/04/2020 08:06

I haven’t managed to shop for a while now. We get some bits delivered by the local farm and I have been to the shops once, just really trying to stay away.
I get the 80 items limit. They are trying to reach more households with each van and also preventing what seems to be happening in my area.
We were self isolating and couldn’t get a delivery, had no food at all so ended up hiring someone to shop for us that time.
Lots of people here are booking a delivery by adding just whatever random item in their basket then going on these “helpful” Facebook groups and asking everyone if they want anything added to their order. Then massive orders and people going around collecting/ delivering from that house.

I find it all selfish

picklemewalnuts · 16/04/2020 08:13

We're not fussy buttery muffin! I'd just like to get 80 items. When you are limited to 80 and then 25 don't come, that's very limited!

And NoLassie, its a crying shame they aren't restricting alcohol, then!

Abbccc · 16/04/2020 08:21

I don't think it's to do with van size as the 80 items rule also apply if you do click and collect.

lyralalala · 16/04/2020 08:23

its a crying shame they aren't restricting alcohol, then!

I actually think the last thing the NHS needs right now is a swathe of detoxing alcoholics.

The DV rates certainly don’t need that extra issue atm.

Incrediblytired · 16/04/2020 08:33

People are so quick to say “if you can go to the shop you should” as if they have special powers which can see invisible vulnerabilities and difficulties! I have even seen posts of Facebook slagging off “healthy young” people who have been spotted at the supermarket click and collect!

The limit is annoying, I shop for my neighbour, nan and mum who are all shielding plus my household who have moderate-severe asthma! Yes my neighbour and nan could be eligible for delivery but they do not have the technological capabilities to suddenly learn how to do this! It would stress them out big time.

80 items doesn’t go far - especially when you probably only get 75% of what you order meaning things carry over week on week.

Local little shops/bakeries/farms delivering have been a godsend and I highly recommend!

Jellycatfox · 16/04/2020 08:36

Wait what? 😣
I don’t understand. Isn’t the online stock meant to match the physical stock?
We ordered some items including special flours (allergy) from a shop before the lockdown (we were self isolating before the lockdown)

It took three weeks to deliver a bar of soap!!!! Where is the flour? When we ordered it they had the stock.
I find it quite infuriating.

lyralalala · 16/04/2020 08:38

@Jellycatfox The order is picked from the shelf on the day of delivery, so there’s no guarantee you’ll get it.

Often they’ll substitute it where they can, but when stocks are low that’s not always possible

Jellycatfox · 16/04/2020 08:40

:-(

11MrsLuther · 16/04/2020 08:41

It's definitely not enough for a family of 6!

Lovemusic33 · 16/04/2020 08:44

The 80 items isn’t just to save van space, it’s to save picker/packer times too so does apply to click and collect (also shopping is stored after picking).

Well I stayed up late last night to get a slot, it’s almost a month after my last slot. I’m not on the vulnerable list, I am a single parent with 2 autistic teens whom I can’t leave for very long, I’m rural so going to a supermarket can take half a day. We had a delivery yesterday and our next delivery will be the 6th of May. I’m not going to moan about the 80 item limit, I’m just pleased that we have got a delivery.
