To think the Tesco 80 item limit is daft?

Doing a weekly food shop for a family of 4, plus getting a few bits for my parents. I’ve easily hit the 80 item limit and so am now going to have to go to a shop to get all the other bits I need which defeats the object of delivery!

AIBU to think 80 items isn’t a huge amount for a family?

It is a system that has its flaws, I picked up neighbours C & C and it had two multi packs of soft drinks so 60 cans and a crate of larger and cider so another 36 cans. My boot was half full just with that but counts as 4 items. In two weeks they have ordered the same but delivered.

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 22:04

@posterlyralalala
Can't speak for all shops. Ours sells the following packs with no stock issues:
Braeburn
Gala
Pink Lady
Jazz
Golden Delicious
Granny Smith
as well as several value packs.

Gingerkittykat · 15/04/2020 22:05

I think the delivery slots vary massively nationwide, I have had no problems getting slots as a non-shielded person in Central Scotland. There is probably more pressure on slots in the cities.

My friend who is shielded in Newcastle cannot get any slots at all.

JustStayHome · 15/04/2020 22:06

Its a pain...

We just have a delivery booked every week and we manage to get by. .

But we aren't buying for anyone else

We are shielding so haven't got an option to go out for extras either

lyralalala · 15/04/2020 22:07

That's true, unfortunately the slots are scarce because although the government have urged people who can to go out and shop, most have been reluctant to do this. I'm afraid it's true that a great deal of our online orders still consist of stuff that the pickers shake their head at - 20 packs of beer, several multipacks of crisps, chocolate and cereal bars etc. I know you are 'allowed' to buy them, but if people are that worried surely they'd be spending their 80 items on 'essentials'?

Presumably the people buying those are not the same as the people struggling to fit the essentials into their list

My BIL is isolating alone so he'll be able to put far more random things into his shop than I would buying for a family. (He's also recovering from confirmed Covid so I wouldn't begrudge him treats)

thenightsky · 15/04/2020 22:09

@ACertainSupermarket That's what I was saying... bags of multiple items used to count as one, but they are not available anymore, so I have to buy 8 individual apples. Of course I'd 'just buy a bag of 8' if there was one to buy, like I used to, but individual apples is all there is on offer at the moment.

lyralalala · 15/04/2020 22:09

@ACertainSupermarket That doesn't help the person who said there were no packs when she was doing her order

Apples in packs are available here, but that's no more use to that poster than your comment.

It's just ill-mannered to reply to someone who says "I have to buy singles as there are no multipacks" with "Just buy a pack"

Itwasntme1 · 15/04/2020 22:09

I have been shopping for three households - 5 adults, three kids, a cat and a dog.

80 items is not a lot, especially when it needs to last ten days.

The kids sacrificed their treats so the cat and dog could have treats🥰.

SMarie123 · 15/04/2020 22:09

Myfriendanxiety I feel your pain, my husband is doing 13 hour shifts 6 days a week and I have 2 kids under 4. Shopping is impossible. You deserve a slot and don't let anyone tell you that you don't!!!

Fair play to you for looking out for others too.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 15/04/2020 22:10

Just buy a pack of apples rather than 8 loose ones!

They're not always available. I stayed up to get my parents a delivery slot (two shielding members in the house).

When I was adding shopping to the cart for them there were no bags of apples, no bags of bananas, no multipacks of tinned tomatoes, no large bags of flour, no bags of carrots...plenty of loose ones though.

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 22:13

@lyralalala
A bit of a stretch to call me ill-mannered when I was giving advice - it sounded like the poster was talking about 8 single apples being counted as the same value as 8 packs. Single items i.e. 3 carrots didn't use to count as more than a single packet. Now they do.

MrsPinkCock · 15/04/2020 22:14

I’m shopping for our family of six (four teenagers!) plus two sets of parents and an elderly uncle.

80 items is fuck all I can assure you.

Thankfully we have a well stocked (and quiet) farm shop, plus a farm down the road selling eggs and bread.

Agree that 80 is an odd (and arbitrary) number.

georgialondon · 15/04/2020 22:15

It's so they can fit more orders in the van. It makes sense.

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 22:16

Well today we were fully stocked in all shapes, sizes and colours of apples (as always Shock , packs and loose bananas and ditto of carrots, multipacks of tomatoes.
But no flour. Again.

lyralalala · 15/04/2020 22:20

@ACertainSupermarket She was literally talking about multipacks of things not being available and said "Apples - used to get a bag of 8 and it was 1 unit, now its 8 items."

It was very clear what she meant in context with her whole post. To pick one part of it out and give advice as if she'd never thought of that is ill mannered imo.

Luckily for you you live in a well stocked area. Well done you.

onetiredmummy13 · 15/04/2020 22:21

Omg yes I had to remove so many things when your only managing to get a slot every 3 weeks what do they want u to do 😭 also the 3 item max 3 loose bananas yeah ok that's going to last long 🤷‍♀️

ACertainSupermarket · 15/04/2020 22:27

@lyralalala
As my manager says, if you're not happy with Tesco, feel free to -fuckoffand- shop elsewhere Wink

lyralalala · 15/04/2020 22:34

@ACertainSupermarket

I don't need to go elsewhere. Luckily I live somewhere that's well stocked. I just don't see the need to speak to other people like they're thick just because the supermarket they happen to have a slot with has no multipacks

XylophoneSymphony · 15/04/2020 22:42

This is why we switched totally to Ocado
Used to get 2 deliveries a week one Tesco one Ocado but now just do a massive Ocado shop instead

Toothsil · 15/04/2020 22:59

It's difficult for a family, especially if you're getting things for others too, but I can see why they're doing it. We've started getting a milkman twice a week and a fruit and veg delivery once a week and that's made a huge difference to our Tesco shop

banjaxxed · 15/04/2020 23:03

This just happened to me as I finally got a slot

I also popped in a few things for my elderly neighbour and effectively have done 4 days shopping

I think it's so they can get on more slots per hour
DH thinks it's so they can make more money

Itwasntme1 · 15/04/2020 23:12

I have now signed up to hello fresh. Expensive but at least I will have an evening meal and it takes the pressure off getting a big shop.

I would love to know where all the stockpilers went.

Surely there should be loads of people out there who have enough food To last six months

FlamedToACrisp · 15/04/2020 23:50

What time do Tesco's slots get released, on what day? I haven't seen any slots at all. My DH has Parkinsons, arthritis and recent heart procedure but hasn't been told he is vulnerable or told to stay home (except by me of course) but I would not risk him by going out if we could get a delivery. Been shopping once at Iceland since 15 March.

JustStayHome · 15/04/2020 23:54

Now. Get on there now

Watertorture · 15/04/2020 23:55

@flamedtoacrisp it's around midnight, but I think the time is getting later. They seem to release one day at a time. The next day (early May) wasn't up at 12.30 last night, but when I had another look this morning it was up and gone.
I don't know if they run the same system everywhere.
I have even seen a click and collect for the next day appearing just after midnight, though I didn't need it.
