Fundraising for the NHS

I know fundraising is well meaning, and I understand the need to give something back to the NHS just now. But I’m feeling really uneasy about the NHS being considered a charity, especially in relation to the current government and the never ending cuts they’ve made.
Also Virgin money takes 2% of every transaction - so lining the pockets of the man who sued the NHS not so long ago.

Are you talking about captain Tom Moore raising over 4 million for NHS?

If so it’s not going to be providing PPE, beds, syringes. It’s for NHS charities. It’s to support staff who are run into the ground dealing with the pandemic (&other things)

Captain Tom has raised over £8.5 million

The NHS itself isn’t a charity, but every Trust has a charitable fund which people can fundraise for or donate to. The NHS charities spend roughly £1m EVERY DAY supporting the NHS following extreme funding cuts over multiple years. They fund specific items like PPE, or machinery rather than going into staff costs or utility bills etc

No, I was mainly talking of the run 5K, tag 5 people, donate £5 thing that’s doing the rounds. To be clear: I’m not being ungrateful about people’s efforts, raising money for something you believe in and want to help is not a bad thing. I’m just worried that the NHS will be seen as something that needs to be propped up with charitable donations, instead of making sure you vote for a government that spends money on it in a way you are happy with. Not running it down for a decade then guilt-tripping people into donating to it when it’s suddenly more essential than it was a year ago.
