I’ve name changed for this one in case it’s outing!!
But.... it’s always been my dream to work with children - teaching assistant is top of my list, always wanted to be a teacher but got swept up in a marketing career and now at 42 am wondering if I’m too old? This lockdown and being furloughed has really got me thinking is this my last chance to pursue this career?
So my question is AIBU for even contemplating this? And I’ve looked all over but what quals should I look at doing to start me off on this road?
Thanks!!

I'm a qualified teaching assistant but not working at the moment.
It was a year long course at college. Teaching is much, much more. You need a degree and then another year for pgce.
Teaching assistant wages are very low too. I loved it but it isn't good money.

there are many many avenues in to teaching nowadays.

Thanks for replying so quick! I just feel like I need to give this a go! These last few weeks more than ever have made me realise how much money I waste! So would be good for me to tighten my belt a bit!

Thank you!
I’m worried I might be a bit old to be a teacher now?

Go for it!

spanieleyes · 15/04/2020 16:02

I started teaching when I was 44 so I wouldn't let your age put you off!

Anewcareer · 15/04/2020 16:06

Wow really? Did you do the years PGCE? We’re their many people in their 40s starting out?

I trained for my career in my 30s. Not teaching, but no, definitely not too old.

My friend is training now to be a teacher, she is 45. Go for it!
