Call for 8th May VE Day Street Parties - jolly fun or recipe for disaster?

We had a street party a couple of weeks ago and social distancing lasted all of 5 minutes. By 6pm everyone was off their faces and all over each other, visitors were invited over, lots of dancing together and sharing food. The main theme was that our street knew better than anyone else and this virus thing was all a load of old rubbish, we'd beat it, not scared etc etc. The next day anyone who didn't take part was called out on facebook.

Since then I've seen reports of police having to break up street parties, alongside cheerful news items saying how amazing they are and what great guys the organisers must be, community spirit etc. So which is it? Vote YANBU to agree that these events are irresponsible and rarely conducted with everyone simply sitting or standing happily in their own garden or drive so should be discouraged - or YABU to say I am a miserable cow trying to upset the neighbours (as declared on said facebook page!!)?

You aren't meant to be having social gatherings, stop fucking spoiling it for those of us who are actually modifying our behaviour and making sacrifices.

Crunchymum · 15/04/2020 15:24

Tell your fuckwit neighbours that if you aren't actually involved

My prediction is that we will remain in lockdown until May 10th so a VE party can't happen and would be a breach of the rules.

And street parties will NOT be required when we come out of lockdown. Just visit your families and close friends, we don't need forced jollity that we can't escape from and will be called out for avoiding on FB (and yes I am a miserable anti-social wotsit).

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 15/04/2020 15:26

There will be specific guidance banning street parties for VE day imminently I expect. If they have another one in the meantime report them to your local police.

TheCanterburyWhales · 15/04/2020 15:29

You lost me at "we had a street party"

Can't cure stupid.

MeerkatMolly · 15/04/2020 15:37

Unbelievable. This virus will never stop with people acting this way.

LockdownMayhem · 15/04/2020 15:39

Who is calling for a VE day Street party? I can't believe this has come from anyone sensible. If it's your neighbours, just tell them no, maybe after lockdown has finished.

TotesGodsWill · 15/04/2020 15:52

Your neighbours are idiots who are going to kill people with their selfish stupidity.

Don’t take part. Report the fuckers to the police.

skippy67 · 15/04/2020 16:06

Someone on our local Facebook group posted the same suggestion today. Front gardens only, so no breach of social distancing. Someone dared to suggest it probably wasn't a good idea, and was met with cries of " but it's for VE day" and "we need a good party"...

araiwa · 15/04/2020 16:10

If thailand can cancel its national 3 day new year celebration then a street party for ve day certainly can be.

DishingOutDone · 15/04/2020 17:05

@skippy67 you've seen it with your own eyes then ...!

Wish you lot were my neighbours.

Can't cure stupid.

Yes you can. The treatment is inevitably fatal but the patient never does anything stupid again.

inwood · 15/04/2020 17:17

Ffs.

AlternativePerspective · 15/04/2020 17:27

I think even when we come out of lockdown large gatherings will be banned for some time. In fact I saw a suggestion today that social distancing measures could be in place until 2022.

I think though that in the short term lockdown will remain in place until after the May bank holiday precisely to prevent street parties etc.

After that though I imagine events like concerts, conventions etc will be cancelled for a long time and sporting events may be played behind closed doors for a while.

skippy67 · 15/04/2020 17:29

@DishingOutDone, yep. It was posted today.

StCharlotte · 15/04/2020 17:31

Fuck it. I'm moving to Sweden.

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2020 17:49

You had a street party during lockdown?

ARE YOU INSANE?

DishingOutDone · 15/04/2020 18:04

@bridgetreilly I'm not going to be passing comments on to the neighbours!

Did you attend this 'end of driveway' street party OP? If you didn't then I suggest you rewrite your op to say that your 'neighbours held a street party....'

DishingOutDone · 15/04/2020 18:12

Actually just re-reading, I suppose you could take this as me saying I had a street party. What I mean is there was a party in my street, no one had a choice as to whether or not it happened, but those who exercised the choice not to take part, like me, were named and shamed.

DishingOutDone · 15/04/2020 18:14

@VenusTiger - no edit facility!

StCharlotte, I think there's a strong chance that Swedish public opinion will follow the same trajectory as British: once the death figures start shooting up they will be less keen on their exceptionalism.

cologne4711 · 15/04/2020 18:24

Yes I agree.

I'd quite like to ban street parties. By all means have a party but not right in front of my house. Last time our street had one I escaped to my mother's, but it's not so easy at the moment. Do you think the police would allow me into Devon if I claimed asylum from street parties ;)

bridgetreilly · 15/04/2020 18:24

@DishingOutDone Ah, gotcha. It did sound like you had held the party.

Franklydear · 15/04/2020 18:27

You may have been named, shamed would be for the naming posters....
