To be bloody sick of things shrinking

I've just opened a pack of Quavers and they're bloody tiny little toenail things. When the hell did that happen? Admittedly it's been a long time since my last packet of Quavers, but they used to be big puffy golden light clouds of rank cheesiness, not these little squares of flatness. Why does everything shrink? It never gets bigger. Unless it's a Double Decker, I think they got bigger, or did everything else just get smaller? Stop messing with my food. I think they probably taste the same?

Massive Quavers fan here, literally cannot get enough of them...

Did you just have a little packet from a multipack? They’re the toenail ones you’re referring to I think.

The big ‘grab a bag’ packets seem to be normal size still!

I'm sure Magnum's have shrunk, had one recently for the first time in yrs, was a bit suprised when i opened it!

drumandthebass · 15/04/2020 08:24

I totally agree. I was thinking just the other day when did Easter eggs become so thin? Do you remember they were much more difficult to break had a really thick bit at the bottom of the egg? Now you can almost see through them

Mucklowe · 15/04/2020 08:24

That's capitalism for you!

StrawberrySquash · 15/04/2020 08:27

Double Deckers did get bigger at one point, I think up to 60 something grams. But then they went weird and flat and just don't work as well as they used to.

underthepatio · 15/04/2020 08:28

I thought you meant clothes. Mine have shrunk massively since I've been working from home.

Bagadverts · 15/04/2020 08:31

It’s a stealthy way to put up prices. I wish some of the big brands would split - some items same price smaller pack, others original size more expensive.

A lot of people budget treats so if prices go up they would not buy at all. Think it will increase - prices of raw materials will go up but people are less stable work/none.

ineedaholidaynow · 15/04/2020 08:33

Easter egg chocolate is mainly cheap tasting chocolate now, unless my taste buds have changed.

Summercamping · 15/04/2020 08:36

Me too @underthepatio Grin

What about Yorkies? I'm certain they used to have 6 chunks, now only 5!!!! This must stop!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 15/04/2020 08:55

I thought that it will be a thread about how wardrobes seem to magically shrink clothesBlush

The great shrinkage in food industry ( and beyond).
It's very simple. People will react better to a pack of cookies going from 485g to 455g but still costing £1.20 than cookies staying at 485g but costing £1.30. Something has to give. Wages rise every year, ingredients are getting more expensive every year, rent for all the premises may cost more etc. It all comes down to the fact that even though consumers shout for minimum wage of £10 an hour and such, they are not willing to pay any increases. And there needs to be an increase every year.

BreatheAndFocus · 15/04/2020 08:55

Things aren’t just shrinking, they’re being messed up too. Remember when Mars bars had a really thick top layer of chocolate that you could break off in a glorious chunk? I couldn’t believe it when I had one recently and it was covered in the thinnest shell of chocolate possible.

And do you remember when Rocky bars were first introduced? I’m not a fan of things like that but my dad was enthusing about them so I tasted one and OMG! There was literally more chocolate than biscuit! Amazing! My mouth’s watering thinking about it.

Now they’ve been ruined too, with the obligatory tiny smear of chocolate 😡

TwentyViginti · 15/04/2020 09:01

It's definitely a thing Grin

fodderbeet · 15/04/2020 15:22

I want a Mars Bar covered in thick chunky chocolate now. And I don't even like them. It's all about wanting what you can't have.

I stopped buying cadbury because the milk chocolate is just. Yuck now. I used to love it!

PenguinsOnParade · 15/04/2020 16:12

Turkish delights must be about half the size they used to be. They were always the pricier option but they lasted more than two bites back then at least.

mrsbyers · 15/04/2020 16:57

Cocoa became more expensive so manufacturers changed to more fat and sugar and then to palm oil and small products

blubberball · 15/04/2020 20:01

If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit....

Clubs have definitely got stingier with the chocolate.

speakout · 15/04/2020 20:03

You are getting older and bigger.
Let go of the illusions!

Troels · 15/04/2020 20:13

I was going to say, yes things are shrinking, I'm sure my clothes are, my jeans barely fasten. I blamed Dh he just laughed. I've ordered a new pair next size up.
