Please don't fly Chinese lanterns for the nhs

People are now talking about flying Chinese lanterns to show respect for the NHS each week.

Please don't do this. They start wildfires, they cause distress to animals, and they cause more litter. One horse was actually set on fire because of them and got severe burns to its face. Sad

Please don't do this. There is enough going on without causing fires and harm to wildlife. Clap all you want, sing etc just not this.

*couldn't agree more. Hmm

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/04/2020 19:47

I hadn’t seen that this Chin-aaa thing was to do with Trump.

I will add failing to understand that joke to all the rest of my failures.

Thymelord · 14/04/2020 19:49

I guess I better do the same. I got the "Chinaaaa" reference, but I don't get the relevance of the lantern part. Must be very edgy and over my head Confused

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/04/2020 20:04

Chin-aaa virus is Donald Trump speak for Coronavirus.

Summersun77 · 14/04/2020 20:07

Didn’t even know these were still available to buy! Agreed OP YANBU

Handy rant from a friend of a friend on FB. We’ve all been emailing/commenting on their FB page all day and sending emails/complaints to this particular company who tell us we are ‘uninformed’ and lanterns are safe. (nightskylantern.co.uk) Sure, yeah, uncontrolled balls of flame are safe, sure. I’d put up some pictures, but then I’d get another trigger warning! There are now over 1000 complaints on their FB page, from which I’m proud to say I’m blocked!

Please see my post from last night about this company’s awful idea to ‘support’ the NHS by causing accidents and fires. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3879946-Omg-I-am-gobsmacked-Trigger-warning-animal-cruelty

I am shocked this even needs to be said!

Unfotunately it’s very difficult to call people out for sky lanterns, balloon releases etc- it tends to be in remembrance or to signify a bereavement and you get a gobfull.

Someone posted a video on a local group of one of these balls of fire streaking across the sky. Lots of comments about the danger etc, until the releaser came on and said it was to remember her miscarriage and she did it every year. Immediately the tone changed to “lovely sentiment” “sorry for ur loss” and the like..

People get in their head because they do it for x y or z reason it’s a lovely thought....

Vinorosso74 · 14/04/2020 20:25

They should have been banned ages ago. I don't agree with things like this to mark a bereavement either-plant something instead rather than releasing something which may harm another living creature.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/04/2020 20:28

If you are thinking of doing it, just remember the 30 primates that died at a German zoo after one landed on their roof.

There are plenty of ways to commemorate loss or thanks that don't involve potentially killing animals. I've always thought bubbles look beautiful floating off in the wind.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 20:30

If you said you were going to mark a bereavement throwing rubbish into a strangers garden and maybe setting fire to their shed and their cat , they'd think you were certifiable.

'Sky lanterns' are essentially doing that.

katseyes7 · 14/04/2020 20:33

A company which sells these was plugging them on twitter this morning for this very reason.
Quite a few people, myself included, pointed out that they're dangerous to wildlife, livestock and the environment. They basically scoffed at us, insinuating we were killjoys.
However... this evening several fire brigades have posted tweets saying how dangerous they are, and under no circumstances should people be using them
This is just one of them.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/04/2020 20:35

I'd rather be a 'killjoy' than a kill horse or kill monkey. An awful lot of joy was killed with those poor creatures.

isabellerossignol · 14/04/2020 20:48

Unfortunately it’s very difficult to call people out for sky lanterns, balloon releases etc-

I got savaged by our school PTA chair for objecting to balloon releases. Even though I pointed out that our school is referred to as an eco-school for it's environmental policy. Apparently being environmentally responsible doesn't matter if you can make a couple of hundred quid. Hmm

Snugglepiggy · 14/04/2020 21:09

Oh please NO.It would be horrendous if this started happening on a large scale. One is bad enough.

ktp100 · 14/04/2020 21:25

But YABU to call them Chinese just because they come from Chi-naaaa

Chi-NA!!

Baaaahahahahahahahahahahaaa!!

ChocolateDove · 14/04/2020 23:11

I didn't get the joke either, but I try to avoid listening to trump at all costs because I know it will just annoy me. Grin

Really bad idea, whatever they're being released for! Thatched cottage in the next village had one land on their roof ... They almost lost the house, luckily their neighbours raised the alarm as the family had gone to bed.
Horrible things!

BlackeyedSusan · 14/04/2020 23:47

Some dipstick launched one from the balcony of a flat...up wind of my flat. Scary moment.

Pretty as they seem, they are flying bundles of remote arson.
