to be watching with my jaw dropped as Trump goes into full meltdown at his press briefing?

Is anyone else watching this?! He is literally ranting like a man possessed, I've never seen anything like it. He's declared war on the media (I know we're used to him lashing out at journalists but this is on another level)

I'm watching it on CNN and they have breaking news straplines like "Trump uses task force briefing to rewrite history on coronavirus response", "Angry Trump turns briefing into propaganda session" and "Angry Trump uses propaganda video, produced by government employees at taxpayers' expense"

He has just said, verbatim: "When somebody is President of the United States, that authority is total"

I thought our daily briefings were bullshit Shock

And to think there was a chance a few months ago to impeach this disgrace to the office Angry

Can anyone who knows abou US politics say why is he allowed to include his family in the way he does?

It's because the Republican Party has become Trump's pet poodle.

..........
Leannb, your post on federal/state relations is nonsense.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 14/04/2020 04:22

I heard a conspiracy theory that he would use the pandemic as a; excuse to cancel the elections and declare himself president for life. It’s looking less and less crazy.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 14/04/2020 04:23

MathAnxiety...he WAS impeached. The Senate just basically refused to put on a trial, and even if they had the Republicans would never have voted to kick him out. But forever he IS an impeached president and I'm sure that pisses him off so much.

JudyCoolibar · 14/04/2020 04:39

No matter the limits on his powers, he is still taking mad decisions - for example his decision to make a big deal of shipping ventilators to us at a time when we have spare ITU capacity and US cases are going through the roof.

LoveIsLovely · 14/04/2020 04:53

There is a worrying strain of anti intellectualism throughout most of the west these days, but Trump really does take the cake.

How can anyone be watching that and thinking he's a good president? I don't even understand what he's trying to say most of the time.

mathanxiety · 14/04/2020 05:53

He was acquitted in the Senate, so he remains at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

mathanxiety · 14/04/2020 05:55

I don't think the House vote pissed him off too much. Until covid-19 arrived and possibly changed the political landscape he was going to use the impeachment as part of his appeal to his core vote in November.

Mummyoflittledragon · 14/04/2020 06:29

He sounds insane. The sped up video upthread of him swaying is illuminating. And omg I had no idea Fox News was so childish. Shock

I feel so sorry for the US. He’s one of two candidates. Even if he isn’t re elected, the other choice is a man, who will be 78 by the time he takes office! Why oh why didn’t Biden back one of his 2 (surviving) children??

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/04/2020 06:33

imagine having the level of confidence in yourself that Trump has?

Not confidence - delusional arrogance.

And this man has his finger on the nuclear button.

Peapod29 · 14/04/2020 06:36

Ah, I just spoke to a relative of mine in the US who said Trump had totally lost it, that would be what they were talking about!

HelloToMyKitty · 14/04/2020 06:42

My relatives love Trump and hate the press so they were practically giggling with glee at the presser. Love my fam but yeah, that’s how they view it. I find it a bit cringe tbh

This is Paula Reid, a reporter from CBS, who, despite persisting, did not get an answer from Trump about what he did about the Coronavirus in February. And he had the cheek to call her fake Angry If only more reporters would take him to task like this.

Piggywaspushed · 14/04/2020 06:47

My BIL loves him. Anything negative about him is a MSM/Democrat conspiracy.

And some of the least hit by CV states are republican states so have no real reason to change their view.

RedRed9 · 14/04/2020 06:48

And he still has an approval rating of 48%,
How?

I think lots of people find it reassuring to think that someone is in total power. They like to think that there is a ‘parent’ who will sort everything out.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 14/04/2020 07:20

The Republicans support him because he's clearly much much better for their goals than a Democrat President. This isn't hard to understand, really.

Leflic · 14/04/2020 07:22

That’s interesting because it’s the exact opposite of what another poster said upthread, That governance is State led, therefore Trump is less of a worry than who governs your State.
Would love to know which version is bearer the truth.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 14/04/2020 07:23

All Ivanka Trump has is a failed jewellery line.

She has an economics degree from Wharton

Both are true IMO. From the point of view of those in power, he’s useful to have as a front man because of the reasoning above. And from the pov of the 48% the ‘parent is in charge’ reasoning applies.

HildegardeCrowe · 14/04/2020 07:34

What is terrifying is that so many Americans continue to think that this megalomaniac is doing a good job and will vote for him in the election.

Astoatora54 · 14/04/2020 07:35

What is terrifying is that so many Americans continue to think that this megalomaniac is doing a good job and will vote for him in the election.

And also how many Americans are totally fine with him giving powerful roles to his UNELECTED family members.

Seriouslyastounded · 14/04/2020 07:37

The press doesn’t exactly cover themselves in glory either

Roussette · 14/04/2020 07:42

If you think the briefing was bonkers, just look at the beginning of it. This is Kim Jong Un dictatorship territory, listen to the music. They are both propoganda videos, showing footage of Governers thanking him, and then the equivalent of an election rally video saying he is doing a fantastic job.

Can you even begin to imagine our press briefings with something like that?

Why were the press and the rest of the politicians and public, destroying him when back in Jan he banned all Chinese flights??
Because, this is ALL he did. And he didn't ban 80,000 Americans travelling in from China at the time

Saying he is in 'total power' is saying 'I am a dictator'. But given he admires all the dictators like Putin, Erdogan, Jong Un... it's what he wants to be. But isn't. And he can't cope with being called to account

BertieBotts · 14/04/2020 07:42

Most people get their news from biased sources - word g mouth, Facebook etc, but also most newspapers and TV channels have a political boas as well. Trump supporters literally see a different trump to the one we see especially if you mostly consume left wing media.

But I am convinced he is a narcissist, and it's terrifying/fascinating to ree what he does with the power he has.
