To feed my family potatoes for nearly every meal!!?

Now I have to say I am a fan of the humble spud.. and I'm making a lot more meals than usual.. but every meal seems to involve bloody potato!!

On top of this the kids (3 and 4) have decided they REALLY like a jacket with cheese and beans for lunch, so have been having that most days too!

Do you think it matters if most meals have spuds as the carb part? Should I make sure I mix it up or are lots of potatoes actually fine in a balanced diet?

We’re eating loads of potatoes at the moment. I wouldn’t worry if you’re serving them with lots of different things.

IHaveBrilloHair · 13/04/2020 20:59

Perfectly fine.
Im quite jealous actually as I dont have any left!

Darbs76 · 13/04/2020 21:01

My kids either have potato or pasta to accompany their meal

chickenyhead · 13/04/2020 21:01

Sounds like my childhood

Statistician999 · 13/04/2020 21:03

Potatoes are a super food.

If you had to choose just one foodstuff to live on for the rest of your life only the potato would keep you alive and reasonably well.

Ipadipod · 13/04/2020 21:03

We’re having loads of jacket potatoes, with beans and cheese- my dd snuck some salad cream in them yesterday and it elevated them into haute cuisine!

RedRed9 · 13/04/2020 21:04

What do you have with the potatoes? I have a lot of potatoes at the moment but can’t think of enough potato based meals!

flowerycurtain · 13/04/2020 21:05

Great food.

Spuds were part of my every meal as a child and I'm a happy healthy and slim 40 year old now.

Runkatierun · 13/04/2020 21:05

I didnt realise how many I used until I ran out last week, I was really unhappy. I've never ran out before. We had 5 nights of no potatoes then a big celebratory shepherds pie with loads of mash once i got my tesco delivery Grin

Merename · 13/04/2020 21:06

Potatoes even have protein in them, did you know?!

delilahbucket · 13/04/2020 21:07

If you were to only ever pick one carb, potato is your best bet. Low fat, full of victim c and potassium, you get brownie points for eating the skin, loads of ways to cook them and they're cheap. Plus your body processes the carbs from them differently to things like pasta and bread. YANBU with your humble spud OP.

AutumnCrow · 13/04/2020 21:09

Sounds all right to me.

They're good with cabbage and seasoning and butter.

They're lovely as part of a curry.

Or in an omelet with tomatoes.

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 13/04/2020 21:10

It's fine. They were a key part of ensuring vitamin C intake during WWII, every day intake with a dollop of fat (cheese/butter) to aid absorption of vitamins & minerals is great.

confusednortherner · 13/04/2020 21:10

We bought a sack a few weeks ago and were just saying they've been a godsend! Home made chips tonight were delicious, dd has taken to doing cheese and onion jackets for lunch and they are going in most meals here too. I'm hoping we can get another when this one runs out as none coming available on our click n collect order.

imamearcat · 13/04/2020 21:10

Well the jackets with cheese and beans are pretty static! But things we have;
BBQ pork, Greek salad, new potatoes
Steak, baby carrot/ green / feta salad, new pots
Sausage or chicken casserole with jackets or mash
Beef stew with jackets or mash
Cottage / shepherds / chicken potato topped pie
Roast dinner (roast potatoes a must!)
Chilli or Bol the kids have with rice / pasta but I kinda prefer JP!
Fish and chips
Nuggets / fish fingers and waffles

We're having loads of spuds due to a wholesale bag. That and eggs as we have chickens and ducks. Omelette with potato broccoli and cheese was lovely.

MerryDeath · 13/04/2020 21:12

potatoes are excellent food! i accidentally bought a 12.5kg bag the other day so we are doing similar.. baked potato though, great idea, why do i never think of those!

Tattiebee · 13/04/2020 21:15

I got loads in a veg box so we have been having them with everything. I'm usually lazy and use oven chips, freshly made have been a revelation and don't take much effort at all, so I'm all for the humble spud! Mashed, roasted, boiled, baked- mmm.

BertieBotts · 13/04/2020 21:16

It's fine! There are only really three carbs anyway - potatoes, rice and flour. You can trace every country's cuisine back to origins of mainly using one of these - Northern Europe is mostly potatoes.

Oysterbabe · 13/04/2020 21:18

I tend to alternate between potatoes, pasta and rice. So we generally have them every 3 days.

dyscalculicgal96 · 13/04/2020 21:18

I am making jacket potatoes for dinner tomorrow.

This is a list of alternatives to try:

Smoked salmon and peas
Chicken burgers
Rice
Sausage and mash
Pasta
Risotto
Beans on toast
Pork chops
Baked cod
Chicken nuggets

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/04/2020 21:19

I've embraced the potatoes this lockdown. Lots of hassleback pots, boiled with butter, and baked topped with cheese and beans.

We don't typically eat a lot of potatoes but they are doing us well.

formerbabe · 13/04/2020 21:19

We get through loads of potatoes...i make my own wedges and the kids can't get enough of them.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/04/2020 21:21

I absolutely love potatoes in every form, but I’m having a weird pregnancy aversion to them (and most other food) at the moment. Bloody annoying as I have loads. Please eat extra for me.
