To hire a private field to walk dog and have a sandwich?

Is this a reasonable or unreasonable thing to do.

2 mile car journey required.

Couple had a sarnie on a blanket whilst the dog "zoomed" around.

Matt Hancock says it’s ok to drive for 5 minutes, I think 2 miles is too far.

I'm confused whether this means you disagree with Matt Hancock. At 25mph, you'd get 2 miles in just under 5 mins?

TinglyFeets · 13/04/2020 14:53

Seems reasonable to me.

RedRedScab · 13/04/2020 14:54

You are boredom personified, OP. Can't you find a more constructive way to occupy yourself?

MartySouth · 13/04/2020 14:57

I am a stickler for the rules at the moment and I do get annoyed about people breaking them but it seems to have become a national pastime to become obsessed by other people's infringements.

I am inclined to think that the government are very happy to stress that the whole situation rests on whether people sit on benches or not so that we all get angry with each other and lose sight of the bigger picture. In Germany social distancing rules are much, much laxer and yet they have a massively lower death rate. Why is that?

  1. Much, much more testing and tracing of contacts (massively more)
  2. Many more intensive care beds and ventilators
  3. Better supply of PPE

All of these things are the responsibility of government, they are nothing to do with whether your neighbour had a picnic. this whole thing reminds me of how quick people were to blame the EU or immigrants or (insert scapegoat here) for poor public services and be apparently ignorant of the fact that lack of housing or public services is a government issue not because of Mr and Mrs Polish plumber down the road.

Direct your anger at the people who are causing our country to suffer so badly. Not your friend who wanted to sit on the grass.

Bringringbring12 · 13/04/2020 14:59

I can see it both ways. I care about the couple and I care about the NHS. Just wanting to inform myself re if their actions increased or deacreased risk.

You have bigger problems than the threat of covid-19 if you can’t establish this for yourself. If they really did get in a car, drive two miles and then sit in an empty field.

Appiandterri · 13/04/2020 14:59

DH and I took Ddog and had a picnic whilst he ran round enjoying himself
Seriously? A picnic?
And that’s the reason that green spaces are going to end up being closed and no one will be permitted to exercise.

It sounds fine to me. If I could afford it and find a suitable field I’d do it and not think twice.

millerjane · 13/04/2020 15:03

No need to be nasty/insult me.

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 13/04/2020 15:04

What an idea to hire / rent out a field. I don’t see the issue really.

It’s that or walk the dog where there are more people presumably. No idea where you are. (Haven’t rtft)

rookiemere · 13/04/2020 15:06

Gosh some posters sound like Lady Bracknell "A picnic" trilled in faux horror. Or phrased another way, a couple out on a walk brought some food to eat mid way so they didn't pass out and waste NHS time.

Lockdown is meant to reduce the numbers of infected and dying, not kill all forms of joy. We'll be on a stricter lockdown if numbers don't start coming down soon, but if they don't that's primarily because of actions the government didn't take sooner and PPE gear not being in the right place at the right time. Yes what's happening is dreadful, but I'm genuinely surprised the Lancashire police have nothing better to do than tell off elderly people for eating sandwiches on a picnic bench.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 13/04/2020 15:06

Report them to the authorities immediately.

Hopefully they will be frogmarched out of their homes and made an example of. Preferably shot. It's your duty.

Alternatively, mind your own fucking business.

Alsohuman · 13/04/2020 15:07

Yes, I heard Lady Bracknell saying that too!

Summersunandoranges · 13/04/2020 15:10

Sounds amazing!

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/04/2020 15:10

Sounds fine by me. 5 mins away....

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2020 15:15

Minimal risk of harm to others, less than walking around busier streets with an easily stressed dog. I can't get fussed about activities like that.

MissBax · 13/04/2020 15:19

If they're hiring the land then it is their land and they can do what they want on it. I'd do the same if I had half the chance!

Katinski · 13/04/2020 15:19

I'm another Lady Bracknell fan, we've actually got a Bracknell Lane round hereGrin
Of course you are not being unreasonable. More to the point, tho, what was in your picnic and dd it include eggs? No eggs in the s'market when I was there...I drool at the thought of eggs...

Hullygully · 13/04/2020 15:19

Can't they loan their hired field to the nhs workers who like dogging when off duty?

SoleBizzz · 13/04/2020 15:20

This is for you not your dog. No YABU

wonkytonkwoman · 13/04/2020 15:22

@cherrybunx0

yes, is the answer to your second question.

MarshaBradyo · 13/04/2020 15:23

Out of all the things people are doing to make some extra money I quite like this one.

Haffiana · 13/04/2020 15:24

It's not permitted to travel there and that's that.

Can you please quote the exact bit of legislation that says that?

Bluntness100 · 13/04/2020 15:26

Good for them, they have tried to reduce some of the over crowding where they normally go, and good for the field owner and their entrepreneurial spirit.

AbbieLexie · 13/04/2020 15:26

We have a large dog who is desperate for a run but the safe field we rent is an unnecessary journey.

Purpleartichoke · 13/04/2020 15:27

I cant get to a single shop within 2 miles, so when I read the OP, I see, “couple reserved private outdoor space in their own neighborhood” and think they are being smart.
