Have you ever been caught?

I was wondering if anyone has ever been caught on MN posting about someone or a situation and been busted?

Have you ever written about a friend or relative or situation and the third party has discovered the post? Or have you been accused and denied it?

I see a lot of "I could've written this" and wondered...

Sorry the heading probably should have been "... to wonder if you've ever been caught"

Have name changed since but I once wrote a post regarding something a friend had done, it was picked up by tabloids and even made it onto the news. She definitely knew it was about her as she confronted me about it

PeepeeDarling · 13/04/2020 11:14

I wasn’t busted on here as such. Daily fail posted pics I’d added for opinions on style and beauty section and wrote an article about it 🙈 although the shots were of my dress (not showing head) 2 friends recognised me from bedroom etc and text me. Very embarrassing all round plus the comments on the fail were BRUTAL 😂😂

PeepeeDarling · 13/04/2020 11:15

Novelty - daily mail online?! Half of their online content lifted directly from This site 🙈

NoveltyFunsies · 13/04/2020 11:16

@peepeedarling how did you guess!?Grin

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/04/2020 11:25

Yes. I had 3 consecutive threads about my ex-h leaving and the subsequent horrors of OW and divorce. It was my lifeline and safe space at the time. OW's situation was quite specific and I believe somebody recognised it and told her. The first I knew about it was when ex-h posted. He was subsequently banned. They then printed all 3,000 posts out and took them to the Police and handed them in to the Court claiming "contempt" because I had anonymously posted about financial hearings (with no identifying details at all). Court ignored it and Police told them it wasn't "harassment" Hmm. They're still there and I often hope other people who know them might come across them and understand the absolute hell they put my kids and I through. Pair of pricks.

MintyMabel · 13/04/2020 12:05

Have you ever been caught trawling online forums for content when you should be actually doing some journalism?

GreenFairy246 · 13/04/2020 12:30

@MintyMabel - HA HA Oh my god! I do sound like I'm a journalist after a story don't I! I'm absolutely not. But then again that's exactly what a journo would say I guess Grin.

I was actually originally thinking about posting about something personal and decided against it because I'm too paranoid and that got me thinking!

No, but I once offered some banking complaints advice to someone and the next time I was at work, she called in and I took the call.

It was a very odd coincidence and as I’d suspected, the reality of the situation was quite different to the post.

MostTacticalNameChange · 13/04/2020 12:56

I recognised my cousin (she'd put the same anecdote she had on FB) and she had started a thread about how she was struggling with a little one and being pregnant. I never mentioned it but got in touch 9 separate times over a month offering babysitting, catch ups, playdates and was rebuffed every time. She doesn't know I saw her posts but either she wasn't struggling that month or clearly just doesn't like me Grin

LucyAutumn · 13/04/2020 13:02

A friend recognised me, nothing untoward, I was talking about cake Grin

Fruitdeleloop · 13/04/2020 15:18

I live in fear of this!

PleasantVille · 13/04/2020 15:22

How did you know it was the same person if the situation was different Confused

Fluffybutter · 13/04/2020 15:24

Hmm...

SuperlativeScrubs · 13/04/2020 15:38

I remember that @TheFormidableMrsC - still admire your incredible strength through it all

CoronaIsComing · 13/04/2020 15:55

My sister recognised me instantly which is fine and I know her username. She hasn’t changed it in years but I have a few times. I often read a ‘familiar’ sounding post and, yep, when I read the username it’s my sister. Neither of us post anything particularly personal though and we usual ‘meet’ on the Christmas boards from Sept 😂.

When I first started posting on MN about 10 years ago (😵) I posted a VERY specific post about us having to sit in the kitchen when we visited with DS as we weren’t allowed in the living room. I was told I was NBU by almost everyone. A few days later DH spoke the her on the phone and she told him she loved her new laptop and had found this great site called Mumsnet 😵. MNHQ quickly deleted that post for me but we were allowed into the living room soon after...

Pinkginhelps · 13/04/2020 16:06

There's someone on here who's nom de plume is my actual name is very similar to my actual name in real life. I often wonder if anyone who knows me thinks that she (nom de plume lady) is me.

Pinkginhelps · 13/04/2020 16:07

Apologies for repetition. The child is distracting me.

TerrorWig · 13/04/2020 19:42

@PleasantVille there was enough for it to have to be the same situation - the poster’s opinion and thoughts about the outcome was very different to the bank’s version of events. I can’t remember the specifics but it was something to do with how a death had been dealt with.

TheoneandObi · 13/04/2020 19:48

I'm pretty sure that is friends and family were on here they could piece together who I am. But I've never posted anything outrageous. My latest thread was to ask for classical music recommendations. But yeah my anonymity could easily be busted

LochJessMonster · 13/04/2020 19:51

No but I posted about a work situation and one poster was so outraged at a certain procedure I had to follow that they said they were going to send it to the Fail in the hope I was recognised and lost my job. The fact that I have a niche job and combined with a recent posting on ‘local’ I could have been identified.

I had to beg MN to take the thread down as I was terrified I was going to get in trouble at work. Now I’m calmer I can see it was unlikely I would have been identified but at the time I was terrified.
I now name change often and never post anything personal.

TerrorWig · 13/04/2020 20:07

@PleasantVille the poster’s INTERPRETATION was different!

My god I got there in the end! Grin

Nameisthegame · 13/04/2020 20:26

My ex searched the search bar specifically until he found a post that sounded like mine. Knob. He then complained that I made him sound like a alcoholic and bad father...well mate don’t act like one then. If your reading this post you owe 2k in child maintenance.
