disgusted that nurses/carers/doctors are dying for lack of PPE in 6th richest country

When this is all over (or maybe now) we must hold Boris and team responsible for risking so many lives.

Our health secretary said this -
“We need everyone to treat PPE like the precious resource it is,” he said on Friday. “Everyone should use the equipment they clinically need, in line with the guidelines: no more and no less.”

Nurses, porters, doctors are sacrificing their own safety and Matt Hockock has nerves to say they must not OVERUSE PPE, they dont have PPEs. Why was he chosen for this job when his background is in economics?

From wikipedia -
He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, and graduated with a first in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and went on to Christ's College, Cambridge, to earn an MPhil degree in Economics.[5][6] Hancock became a member of the Conservative Party in 1999.[7]
After university, Hancock briefly worked for his family's computer software company, before moving to London to work as an economist at the Bank of England, specialising in the housing market.

A doctor who warned Boris a month ago about risks of medical staff working without PPEs has died of corona virus at the age of 53.

In his message to the prime minister, Dr Chowdhury wrote: "Please ensure urgently PPE for each and every NHS health worker in the UK.

"Remember we may be doctors/nurses/HCAs/allied health workers who are in direct contact with patients, but we are also human beings to practice human rights like others, to live in this world disease free with our family and children.

"Otherwise in future our children will lose interest to go to medical school.

And for those who are going to say I am making it political at the time of crisis, no I am not. I want this government to be accountable for their actions.

Why UK declined EU's offer of collective PPE purchase.

We did not know this was going to affect us in December why do people keep saying that

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/04/2020 14:02

You haven't lodged a complaint.

Well, no I haven't because I'm no longer working as a nurse

Do you know anyone who has?

Yes I do.

Some hospitals/hospital trusts are better managed than others, we know that already - you need to lodge a complaint with your particular hospital/hospital trust first.

As I said, no longer a nurse but we can all see that NHS management, health secretary and the government are aware of the situation and nothing has been done, so quite what you think official complaints will do, I don't know.

Do you think if an official complaint is made that anything will change?

bluebluezoo · 13/04/2020 14:03

Everyone needs to stop blaming the government, there is a shortage, that's not their fault!

Is there a shortage though?

Generally the information about no PPE currently is coming from hysterical journalists who have multiple “sources” in the NHS contacting them personally about the scandal.

Someone pointed out on twitter yesterday- how do all these nurses and dr’s suddenly have journalist personal contact details, and why go to a journalist and you know, not line managers?

Plus every single dr and nurse interviewed in the last few days have said they have adequate PPE at the moment. Interviewer moves swiftly on...

There is so much misinformation about don’t believe anything that isn’t directly sourced. A post you’ve seen claiming to be from someone with a friend/relative/sister in the nhs isn’t a source.

There was a tweet last week claiming 3 nurses had died at a welsh hospital, and two more were in itu. It was shared and retweeted 1000’s of times with much hysteria about these angels and bemoaning the lack of PPE which had led to these poor souls contracting CV.

Until the welsh hospital put out a statement saying no nurse were, or had been in itu and it was all made up bollocks...

Easilyanxious · 13/04/2020 14:04

People saying about Boris being tested of course he would he's the prime minister and on another thread I'm reading that finally nhs staff are getting tested as well know and gove would full in time a needed member of government of course they will get tested , nieve to think otherwise

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/04/2020 14:06

@bluebluezoo
Matt Hancock addressed the shortages, including blaming staff for using too much of it and insisting that it isn't changed between patients etc.

Are you suggesting that he was lying too then?

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 14:07

I have a nurse in my family and am friends with a HCA. The HCA says they have basic flimsy aprons, gloves and masks, but no eye protectors. The nurse says the PPE does not meet WHO standards for PPE. But the UK standards for PPE for corona are much lower than WHO standards. The aprons being used are the kind the afterschool club use to protect kids doing messy play.

Easilyanxious · 13/04/2020 14:08

@bluebluezoo

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 14:08

@bluebluezoo They are going to journalists because no one is listening to them. What do you suggest they do if reports are made and nothing changes?

Easilyanxious · 13/04/2020 14:12

But some are claiming they do have enough ppe so seems to be different between each hospitals are some just better run than others ? Or maybe less patients . There is also a lot of my friends sister is a nurse or dr who says this . The people on here who are actually frontline working are the ones who I think know the truth some are reporting not enough others they are ok so seems as I say to vary , not sure why

Clavinova · 13/04/2020 14:14

He also said;
"761 million pieces of PPE have been delivered in the last few weeks."

bluebluezoo · 13/04/2020 14:15

*Matt Hancock addressed the shortages, including blaming staff for using too much of it and insisting that it isn't changed between patients etc.

Are you suggesting that he was lying too then?*

I don’t know who the fuck to believe, that’s my point.

Matt hancock has just placed the blame on nhs staff for using too much PPE. Are you suggesting he has such integrity he wouldn’t say things to make himself look good?

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 14:18

@Easilyanxious Some areas have way more deaths than others so I suspect some areas have way more corona patients than others. So would not be surprising if some have enough and others don't.

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 14:19

I suspect Matt Hancock has heard someone describe how often they are supposed to change their PPE, thought it is too much, and said that. With zero medical understanding of what is actually needed for good infection control.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 13/04/2020 14:20

I would love to forget the politics and get w genuine factual reason why this is so
I don’t necessarily believe it’s ‘heartless tories’ but clearly some issue with both supply and sensible procurement

They built a hospital so clearly there is money

I don’t understand why

Clavinova · 13/04/2020 14:21

But the UK standards for PPE for corona are much lower than WHO standards.

Wouldn't UK standards for PPE meet EU regulations though?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/04/2020 14:23

761 million pieces of PPE have been delivered in the last few weeks."

He did. What counts as a piece of PPE though? A pair of gloves? An apron? A surgical mask? An N95 mask? Face shield? A gown?

What's important isn't the total number of pieces but that the right amount of each of the pieces is provided.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 13/04/2020 14:25

I suspect Matt Hancock has heard someone describe how often they are supposed to change their PPE, thought it is too much, and said that. With zero medical understanding of what is actually needed for good infection control.

Exactly that.

Wonder when he'll realise how wrong he was? When hospital acquired infection rates go through the roof and we have an MRSA outbreak, or similar, throughout hospitals on top of C19?

Clavinova · 13/04/2020 14:30

Where did the op go? They only posted once.

olympicsrock · 13/04/2020 14:52

I’m a hospital doctor and recovering from Coronavirus. Two weeks ago I turned up to our teaching hospital mask fit checking session to find there were no masks to try on our faces at all - we had to watch a video and imagine. This was after we were told that fit testing was no longer necessary ( it was simply that there was no time, or masks to do it).
I think I got CV 19 from assessing a Patient wearing a surgical mask, apron and gloves. He was coughing and did not keep his mask on all the night. The nurse with me that day has also been affected.

When I went to be tested the nurse in occupational health was not given an FFP3 mask to wear despite doing a procedure that caused me to wretch and cough. How is this not aerosol generating? We should have more high level PPE.
The government has sent healthcare workers like me to war with no protection.

missyB1 · 13/04/2020 14:57

@olympicsrock that is exactly how my dh (hospital Dr) feels. He is wearing inadequate PPE everyday.
And to then hear Mat Handjob insinuating that staff are wasting it! Ffs talk about a slap in the face!

Iloveknockknockjokes · 13/04/2020 14:58

I work in a hospital. We have a flimsy apron covering scrubs we bought ourselves. Gloves and apron changed between patients. One visor given per worker....we are keeping these in plastic bags and wiping them between patients....they are meant to be single use. We are then expected to eat in our scrubs and bring them home and wash in our own machines. WHO say we should be in long sleeved gowns. PHE say flimsy apron enough. Given surgical masks: one for four hours. No FFP3 they are being held back for ICU staff which I respect as they are higher risk but ideally we all would have them. Managers are telling us to do this and know we are not happy.

Doctors are afraid of speaking out but are messaging Richard Horton Lancet editor: have a read of what he has to say
Someone who said we'll have a stable career at the end: NHS are recruiting and crying out for anyone with whatever skills they have.....so please do sign up if you're envious.

Clavinova · 13/04/2020 15:12

Doctors are afraid of speaking out but are messaging Richard Horton Lancet editor: have a read of what he has to say

Did you read my earlier post?

"Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet and now a very vocal critic of the government tweeted this on the 23rd Jan;"

"A call for caution please. Media are escalating anxiety by talking of a “killer virus” + “growing fears”. In truth, from what we currently know, 2019-nCoV has moderate transmissibility and relatively low pathogenicity. There is no reason to foster panic with exaggerated language."

alloutoffucks · 13/04/2020 15:16

@Thisisworsethananticpated They are now struggling to buy PPE needed. We knew this was coming, we should have prepared.
It is equivalent of trying to buy toilet paper in a supermarket when there were already shortages and it was hard to buy.

Clavinova · 13/04/2020 15:17

Richard Horton obviously has a political agenda - he tweeted this about Matt Hancock last year - months before any of us had heard of coronavirus;

"A combination of gutlessness and sycophancy leads Matt Hancock to pander to the ill-informed prejudices of Boris Johnson.Welcome to Britain."

MogeatDog · 13/04/2020 15:19

Weren't staff silenced by hospital management for complaining about lack of PPE?
