To not want schools to give up summer holidays

littleblackdress04 · 12/04/2020 09:32

Just read in papers that it’s been proposed that kids go back to school in July/ August

I think this is a rubbish idea - if it’s going to be that long then just let them have a ‘normal’ summer and go back in September.

Kids have been cooped up because of this- I’d want to take mine to the hills, go camping & let them have some freedom. Then start school in September. This isn’t a holiday for them - it’s a horrible stressful period of being cooped up & not being able to live their normal lives.

While school gives a structure and is important, so are proper periods of holiday.

I’m really against the idea but aibu? Be interested to hear other thoughts. I’ve not been particularly worried about the kids education- they will catch up in time and it will be fine

Imagine if other 'key workers' were pulled into question like this!

Clavinova · 14/04/2020 14:05

We were doing so well to have this as a Clavinova free haven up until now

Really? Looks like pages and pages of arguments to me.

CallmeAngelina · 14/04/2020 14:09

Well, there are certainly a lot of posters wandering in aimlessly to repeat points of view or bloody silly questions about holiday pay that have been answered a gazillion times.

Clavinova · 14/04/2020 14:14

What I can never understand - if teachers on here think they are not paid for the holidays why don't they take it up with their unions? Teachers in the independent sector receive holiday pay and so do teachers in Scotland;

"Employee rights in the independent sector"

"It is standard practice for teachers to be entitled to take all school holidays as paid annual leave, although your employer may reserve the right to require you to attend for one or two days in the holiday."

neu.org.uk/advice/employee-rights-independent-sector

Teach in Scotland
"A teacher’s full working year is 195 days–which includes 5 days of in-service training. Every year, you’ll get 40 days’ holiday at full pay."

@Clavinova you seem a prime candidate for my volunteer scheme!

Thewarrenerswife · 14/04/2020 14:17

I like the idea. I want my kids to have some normality back. School structure, friends, sports day etc. How long do people want to hang around doing nothing for?! Sure still take a holiday, but most people only take a week, so it’s no big deal. We normally take 3 weeks, but we’ll live without... plus can’t afford it after this shit shower of a year so far.

Clavinova · 14/04/2020 14:17

I can see dozens of recent posts about holiday pay but you've given the wrong answers.

I'm a primary school teacher on Easter Holidays still, This week I'm doing 3 days a week in school looking after key worker children from 8-6.

Today I've been working since 7am - currently having a lunch break as need to feed my children who are entertaining themselves, ok for the 14 and 16 year old but bit rubbish for the 8 year old.

I have spent all morning adapting the topic plans so it is accessible for the children I teach, who have limited access to technology, no access to printers and some don't have the parental support either, I've made most of the learning practical - last thing I want is to have 10 year olds plonked in front of screens for hours. Hopefully the learning is fun so it will engage them and they will want to do it.

We have sent out timetables so each day they have a maths, literacy and topic activity with reading, times tables practice and spelling practice. The majority of the activities are practical and something the children should be able to do independently whilst hopefully having fun.

We will not be doing live teaching as most of the children won't access it as school covers a deprived area. Also I don't have an Interactive white board or other teaching aids in my house!! PowerPoints being shown are assuming families can access Microsoft office.

All children have been given a book to do the work in to hand in on return to school as again very few households have the facilities to scan work back to us. We have told children they can email photos of them doing their learning to share on school website.

I've also got school reports to write and assessment data for the school year up to the point we stopped teaching. I've reviewed and set new PLP plans for the SEN children in my class, I've set differentiated learning packs for these children.

Some parents probably think I'm not working hard enough but in these 2 weeks holidays I've had 4 days off with my family ( Easter Weekend)

AGAIN IVE DONE ALL OF THIS IN THE 2 WEEK SCHOOL HOLIDAYS.

The 2 weeks before I was either in school looking after key worker children or trying to set home learning work at short notice.

Appuskidu · 14/04/2020 14:19

sports day

WTF!?

600 children, all school staff, 1000 odd parents plus younger siblings all in one field?!

Yeah, like that’s going to be happening this summer!

Clavinova · 14/04/2020 14:22

Clavinova you seem a prime candidate for my volunteer scheme!

I'm not complaining about my dcs' teachers - I can't really ask more of them - very impressed so far.

FrippEnos · 14/04/2020 14:23

Clavinova
I can see dozens of recent posts about holiday pay but you've given the wrong answers.

some are the right answers where as yours about holidays are just wrong.

Sighting independent sector and Scottish terms and conditions are not state school pay and conditions.

Clavinova · 14/04/2020 14:32

[Sighting] independent sector and Scottish terms and conditions are not state school pay and conditions.

The copied passages were from the Burgundy Book.

Appuskidu · 14/04/2020 14:35

@clavinova

Why do you keep quoting how Scottish teachers get 40 days paid holiday then?

Is it because there is no mention of this holiday pay in the Burgundy Book?!

FrippEnos · 14/04/2020 14:38

Clavinova

and they both state independent and Scottish. Why would they do that if they were referring to all teachers?

But do keep trying.

and yes Citing*

FrippEnos · 14/04/2020 14:39

I have to say that I do admire your dedication to something that doesn't affect you or your children in anyway.

Ylvamoon · 14/04/2020 14:41

All these people bashing teachers for getting paid for nothing

It's not really teacher bashing, the title of the thread is " TO NOT WANT SCHOOL TO GIVE UP SUMMER HOLIDAYS".
And there have been a lot of teachers on this thread, claiming that they are entitled to 6 weeks summer holidays and also telling everyone how hard they are working, never acknowledging that these are strange times and things are far from normal. Or that a lot of other professions working just as hard.
I for one, would like to see summer holidays posoned or shortened. Simply because I firmly believe that there will be heavy travel restrictions in place. People will have little or no money to entertain the children and most importantly of all, education is currently very patchy. (There are numerous threads on this).
So, I like my children, to have some education provided by someone who is qualified to do so, someone who knows the curriculum and is able to make learning a fun experience. That's what I have singed up to when I send my DC to school. I don't care if teachers have paid/ unpaid holidays.
For those who are interested: I have 1 primary DC, school is on Easterbreak, teacher sets 1 worksheet per day math / English- fine, but not enough for a y5 pupil.
My y11 DC has been abandoned since lockdown by school, even though they want to attend 6th form and desperately want to learn, but nothing but generic emails from school about GCSE grading. I have to add thre is one teacher pulling out the stops, it's for science, DC attends online classes even though not a choice for 6th from.

FrippEnos · 14/04/2020 14:52

Ylvamoon

So in short because it suits you.

So if you are interested.

I am quite happy to go back to school, (note school, not work because that hasn't stopped), as soon as is reasonably safe to do so.
That could be May (12 weeks) it could be later.

If my school asks for volunteers for the summer, I will volunteer.

But I will argue any point that people that know nothing put forward as gospel or because they can't see that what they want shouldn't dictate government policy.

littleblackdress04 · 14/04/2020 14:55

Op here- thanks for all your comments- it’s clearly a divisive subject. On another note- I had an abusive message from a poster to my personal messages about this thread- thats actually never happened before to me on mumsnet!

OP posts:
OhCaptain · 14/04/2020 14:57

What??

Post it and shame them!

littleblackdress04 · 14/04/2020 14:59

How do I report them to Mumsnet HQ?

OP posts:
juicy0 · 14/04/2020 15:02

I know I'll probably get totally flamed for this but I really don't think we can ask or expect teachers to work throughout July/August. Many have already given up all or part of their Easter break to support key worker children and if they are then expected to work through the summer they won't have a break until October half term. Having worked in a school I have witnessed the levels of exhaustion experienced by many teachers towards the end of a normal term, teaching is a way of life and it doesn't start or end as they enter or leave the classroom it goes far beyond that.
I have two DC and I know they are missing school and uni terribly and I look forward to them being able to return safely soon. I think there is a possibility they might go back for the second part of the summer term in some form but I fully expect to have them off during the summer break as usual and am hopeful that they return as normal in September.

There is a report button in the message itself.

Yes - you should let MNHQ know. So sorry that happened - some people appear to have lost their heads Flowers

FrippEnos · 14/04/2020 15:13

You could send an email to MNHQ they may still have the email on their servers.
