Is there a source for that, Rousette?

I'm really hoping it's not true (but kinda resigned that it might be).

PerkingFaintly · 25/04/2020 12:26

Sorry, obviously you have a source; I know you wouldn't make it up. But could you share it so I can bang my head against something.

merrymouse · 25/04/2020 12:27

"When he gets new information, he likes to talk that through out loud ... I think he just saw the information at the time immediately before the press conference and he was still digesting."

Was this a cry for help?

She has made it clear that

1). He was not briefed until just before the conference.
2). He did not understand the information.
3). She does not believe the 'sarcasm' excuse.

PerkingFaintly · 25/04/2020 12:30

They're all on a tightrope.

Contradict the Orange One => defenestration.
Fail to contradict him => tacit endorsement of his words in the mind of the public => deaths.

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 12:32

It's frightening how reluctant people are to disagree with him.

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 12:38

It's what happens in dictatorships etc no one can risk contradicting the leader in any way shape or form.
As a result of this the leader increasingly experiences him or herself as someone who is always and inherently in the right.

lionheart · 25/04/2020 12:39

Not just Trump, of course.

Is this going to be a turning point, bleachgate/ disinfectantgate?

chomalungma · 25/04/2020 12:54

www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-claims-he-was-being-sarcastic-about-disinfectant-comments

From that:

On Friday, the president went on to maintain that he was asking his medical officials to “look into whether or not sun and disinfectant on the hands can help us

Doesn't he realise that all we need is soap and water on hands?
Does he even listen to what his health experts have been advising for months?

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 12:58

Of course trump doesn't listen to experts, he believes that his 'good you know what' is far superior to any expert knowledge
he cannot tolerate the idea of anyone being better than him, therefore he has to believe that the experts are all beneath him

lionheart · 25/04/2020 13:02

NYT tries and then fails to adopt a fence sitting approach.

The New York Times
@nytimes

'We've deleted an earlier tweet and updated a sentence in our article that implied that only "some experts" view the ingestion of household disinfectants as dangerous. To be clear, there is no debate on the danger.'

OP posts:
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/04/2020 13:18

You mean the NYT might have been trying to suggest that anyone who could be deemed an expert in the matter would advocate drinking bleach? Or in fact anyone sane? That is mind-boggling.

merrymouse · 25/04/2020 13:20

Of course trump doesn't listen to experts, he believes that his 'good you know what' is far superior to any expert knowledge
he cannot tolerate the idea of anyone being better than him, therefore he has to believe that the experts are all beneath him

Meanwhile at a time of national crisis the US government is running around trying to create policy based on his latest brain fart on immigration or the postal service.

merrymouse · 25/04/2020 13:20

Sorry, world crisis.

Roussette · 25/04/2020 13:21

Perking I saw it in the Daily Fail and really didn't want to link that rag! However, on reading it again, it's 100 calls to an emergency hotline about ingesting bleach. No idea if they had, sorry for exaggeration from me, I didn't want to read the DM so took the headlines.

Here's Rawstory reporting on it
www.rawstory.com/2020/04/nyc-poison-control-center-records-jump-in-lysol-and-bleach-cases-after-trumps-remarks/

Also another interesting slant on the whole mess...

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/24/revealed-leader-group-peddling-bleach-cure-lobbied-trump-coronavirus?CMP=share_btn_tw

'The leader of the most prominent group in the US peddling potentially lethal industrial bleach as a “miracle cure” for coronavirus wrote to Donald Trump at the White House this week.
'
'Grenon styles himself as “archbishop” of Genesis II – a Florida-based outfit that claims to be a church but which in fact is the largest producer and distributor of chlorine dioxide bleach as a “miracle cure” in the US. He brands the chemical as MMS, “miracle mineral solution”, and claims fraudulently that it can cure 99% of all illnesses including cancer, malaria, HIV/Aids as well as autism'

Roussette · 25/04/2020 13:25

Genesis II sounds like the baddie organisation from a Bond movie Shock

merrymouse · 25/04/2020 14:27

It seems unlikely (I hope!) that Trump was directly influenced by Genesis II, unless they have influence over the radio or TV shows he watches . However, the existence of groups like this is why it is so dangerous for Trump to randomly suggest unproven treatments.

Roussette · 25/04/2020 14:54

Maybe but it is somewhat of a coincidence that they wrote to him earlier this week Shock and then he comes out with this BS...

AcrossthePond55 · 25/04/2020 15:01

If the upshot of his 'bleach 'em, light 'em up' madness is that he no longer wants to appear at the briefings, then maybe it was worth it.

The factual information provided by medical professionals at the briefings is valuable information. But we can't bear to watch it because of his insane and inane ramblings. And the time they have to take to correct his misinformation without him realizing it is a waste.

IMO it wasn't about musing out loud, it was all about thinking his pea-sized brain had found the 'miracle cure' that the trained medical and scientific professionals have not yet found so he commanded that it be 'looked into' so he could claim credit. Same as with the Hydroxychloroquine. He didn't think about the logic or the likelihood, he just wanted to be able to claim credit for a cure IF it turned out to be one. After all, think of what it would do for his poll numbers??

Like I said upthread, I wouldn't put it past him to suggest he might walk amongst 'the Faithful' in a Trump Thaumaturgy laying his hands on their heads in his version of the 'King's Touch'.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/04/2020 15:06

When I say 'it was worth it' I don't mean that if anyone was harmed due to his insanity it was worth it. I just mean the amount of PR and airtime his insanity got might be worth it.

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 15:20

I can't find it now but I read an article late yesterday about the subsequent Oval Office briefing where he claimed sarcasm excuse, and that he was addressing these comments to journalists. He actually picked out and named a specific journalist who was at the oval office meeting, stating he was "looking at you Bob" (can't remember the name) when he made the disinfectant comments (in jest) "Bob' then said he wasn't at the briefing the previous evening.
Did anyone else read this cos it's really annoying me that I can't find it!

lionheart · 25/04/2020 15:26

He's still hankering after that Nobel.

This is the transcript of the Oval Office Bill signing
www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/remarks-president-trump-signing-ceremony-h-r-266-paycheck-protection-program-health-care-enhancement-act/
The bit I am referring to is right at the end. As a transcript, it doesn't identify who is speaking from the Press Corps, and whether there is one or more speakers. . The BBC article did identify the Press speakers.
