Rachel Maddow MSNBC
@maddow

"Mr. Trump abruptly announced that he would be speaking at West Point. That was news to everyone, including West Point.
They are now summoning 1000 cadets scattered across the country to return to campus in New York, a state at the center of the outbreak."

Why? Why play along and not just let him speak to an empty room? He only wants them as wallpaper anyway.

Unless he gave an order as Commander in Chief?

Sick little fuck, either way.

I actually appreciate Dr Birx’ take. I imagine that is just what Trump has done - not that it was advisable, though. I think too much has been made of it by the media, to its discredit. I’m not usually one to hold back on criticism of Trump, but this wasn’t entirely warranted.

Roussette · 25/04/2020 07:54

I think DrBirx is probably right, but it is inxcusable. Because it means he is thinking out loud when he holds these briefings and that is dangerous, given the fact he is not very intelligent.

Claws yes up to a point maybe, but listening to him saying it was jaw dropping. I thought 'WTF is he on about, get light inside the skin and inject with bleach????'

I am no fan of our Government but at least they give out measured thoughtful statements.

Trump to scale back coronavirus press conferences after disinfectant comment: report
thehill.com/homenews/administration/494604-trump-to-scale-back-coronavirus-press-conferences-after-disinfectant

President Trump is reportedly planning to scale back coronavirus task force press briefings, appearing less frequently to discuss the virus, according to a new report from Axios.

Sources told the outlet that Trump might no longer appear at the press conferences daily, and said top advisers have advised reducing his speaking time among task force officials and scaling back the often hours-long briefings.

Some also reportedly suggested the virus is past its peak and there is a lack of updates that would require the daily updates from the president.

The change could be related to Friday's shorter task force briefing, which lasted just under 25 minutes and included no questions from reporters. Last Friday's briefing, in comparison, ran for about one hour and 45 minutes.

The move would come as Trump faces scrutiny from scientists and medical professionals over his musings at Thursday's coronavirus task force briefing about the possibility of light or disinfectant injections being used to treat patients with the coronavirus.

According to Axios, his advisers have told him the appearances are hurting his poll numbers, and "the spectacle of him fighting with the press isn't what people want to see."

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany maintained Friday that Trump's remarks about light and disinfectants were taken out of context by the media.

"President Trump has repeatedly said that Americans should consult with medical doctors regarding coronavirus treatment, a point that he emphasized again during yesterday's briefing," McEnany said in a statement. "Leave it to the media to irresponsibly take President Trump out of context and run with negative headlines."

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 08:22

It's meant to be a Briefing not a let's muse out loud about stuff I don't
really understand by Trump. Just because he can't be arsed to read the information up in advance is no excuse to spout dangerous guff.
If he wants to throw out daft ideas he should do it in off the record meetings with knowledgeable advisers

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 08:29

According to Axios, his advisers have told him the appearances are hurting his poll numbers, and "the spectacle of him fighting with the press isn't what people want to see."
So disinformation doesn't matter, only his ratings.
They're right, normally a crisis is good for a president's ratings but these Briefings are exposing Trump as an unintelligent man, out of his depth, and trying to blame everyone else. It's not surprising that his advisers want the public to see less of him

Stephen Miller indicates immigration pause will be long term: report
thehill.com/homenews/administration/494572-stephen-miller-indicates-immigration-pause-will-be-long-term-report

Senior White House adviser Stephen Miller reportedly told supporters in an off-the-record call Thursday that President Trump's temporary order to suspend immigration is part of a larger strategy to reduce overall immigration.

According to audio of the call obtained by The Washington Post, Miller said that "the most important thing is to turn off the faucet of new immigrant labor" and that the temporary ban would limit "chains of follow-on migration."

Trump's order, signed Wednesday, suspended for 60 days the entry of some green card applicants based abroad.

The order has carveouts for specific would-be immigrants, including essential workers, spouses and young children of U.S. citizens, investor visa beneficiaries and service members.

But no exclusions exist for foreign national parents and parents of U.S. citizens, spouses and children of legal permanent residents and beneficiaries of the diversity visa program, known as the visa lottery. Those groups have sometimes been referred to by the administration and immigration restrictionists as "chain migration."

Acting Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli also joined the call and spoke briefly, according to The Post, saying that the order was in line with the administration's broader immigration policy.

"This is something the president has been looking at himself since the economic effects of the covid virus began," Cuccinelli reportedly said. "We've had numerous conversations with him. And so what you saw yesterday was a continuation of his own thinking."

Miller portrayed the order as a "historic" move to protect American workers from undue foreign competition.

After the executive order was announced, immigration advocates argued that it had all the markings of Miller's influence.

"Stephen Miller somehow, someway convinces President Donald Trump to constantly go to immigration as an issue, regardless of the policy matter we're trying to address," Rep. Tony Cárdenas (D-Calif.) told The Hill on Friday.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Miller, who has long argued that immigration hurts American workers, has maintained close ties with groups that advocate for placing more restrictions on immigration.

Those groups blasted Trump's executive order for not including more restrictions, such as moratoriums on guest worker visas.

Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, said in a statement that "corporate lobbyists and other immigration expansionists in the White House persuaded the President to significantly water down" his order.

In a Fox News interview Thursday, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said his agency will soon recommend a move to limit temporary work visas as well.

"That is something that the department has been looking at for the past several months, so we are well underway and look forward to presenting to the President those recommendations for additional steps," said Wolf.

I’m not disagreeing at all that he shouldn’t have done it; nobody wants him to be riffing on possible treatments at a press conference. That’s what he was doing - working through a previous conversation he’d had, out loud, to camera, phrased in layman’s terms. (That’s my take, anyway.)

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 10:35

I don't really understand Trump
To understand him remember the following, in his mind he is the best person ever, everything he does is right because he's the best person ever, he is never wrong and he answers to no one. Everything follows from that, that's all you need to know in order to understand Trump.

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 10:44

He can't be arsed to read the information up in advance
This is not a man who reads, he doesn't have the intellect to absorb information like that, if he did start trying to read it he would feel insulted/angered by the fact that he couldn't understand it, he would then feel compelled to stop and do something else like golf because the best and the most important man in the world shouldn't have to do anything that he doesn't enjoy.

lionheart · 25/04/2020 10:47

Yes, that's what he is doing but he's doing it publicly because he wants to take credit for those ideas and/or be seen to wave his imperial hand in the direction of the scientists who will then have Presidential support to 'look into it'.

This is not just about his stupidity (we know) or about his relentless narcissism (ditto) but about his inability to fulfil the most basic functions of a President in this particular time of global crisis.

But I do take the point that jumping all over every shred of evidence of his ignorance, corruption and instability can be twisted to make him look like a victim of the press, the hateful Democrats etc.

It's just that there's so much damn evidence from which to choose ...

Smile

That’s what he was doing - working through a previous conversation he’d had, out loud, to camera, phrased in layman’s terms The middle of a Press and Public Briefing is NOT the correct place for inaccurate stream of consciousness ramblings. People need clear facts backed by science.

TheClaws · 25/04/2020 11:08

BruceAndNosh That’s what I said.

BruceAndNosh · 25/04/2020 11:19

@TheClaws sorry yes, we agree.
But it's inexcusable on the part of Trump. He's a Leader. He's supposed to be bloody leading

Roussette · 25/04/2020 11:25

The UV light and bleach was for surfaces and how quickly those got rid of the virus on hard surfaces... it's a helluva jump for using that inside a human!
I don't doubt he'd heard this but it is beyond comprehension jumping to something so ridiculous. I can imagine a child thinking like this...
He really is an imbecile and no wonder he is scaling back the briefings, they were up to 2 hours before, yesterday after his faux pas, was 25 mins and no questions

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 11:28

The UV light and bleach was for surfaces and how quickly those got rid of the virus on hard surfaces... it's a helluva jump for using that inside a human!
It's a hell of a jump for a normal person, but for Trump it isn't a jump at all because for him human beings are mere objects which can be cleaned with bleach and ultraviolet light.
I think this tells us loud and clear that in his mind other human beings are no more important than inanimate objects☹️

B1rdbra1n · 25/04/2020 11:31

In India human beings are treated like livestock, hosed down and sprayed with disinfectant, in America the president wants to treat human beings like objects which can be bleached clean
