International group of super rich refused entry to France after turning up in private jet

A group of people, 7 men aged 40-50 and 3 women aged 23-25 rocked up to the south of France on a private jet, were refused entry and then tried to call contacts to reverse the decision. They had 3 helicopters on the tarmac ready to take them to a villa in Cannes. They were sent back to London the same day. Only the pilots were fined.

Surely the pilots were made to fly by their boss, why were they the only ones fined? The selfish old men and their young girlfriends should have been heavily fined and named and shamed?

I’ve been reading several reports of rich jet setters continuing to live as before and endangering lowly paid staff. Many outbreaks have been triggered by rich globe trotters and the ones who largely suffer are the poor people who can’t work from home.

AIBU in thinking the press should be talking about this issue as well as people sitting in the park or going out for more than one walk a day?

Flying in with prostitutes?

LilacTree1 · 10/04/2020 14:04

You won’t hear about it because the media aren’t interested in giving them a hard time.

Hingeandbracket · 10/04/2020 14:04

AIBU in thinking the press should be talking about this issue

Eh? You posted a link to the Grauniad - are they not "the press" then?

Lockheart · 10/04/2020 14:05

YABU and ridiculous to complain the press aren't reporting it when you link to... the press reporting it.

JasonPollack · 10/04/2020 14:06

They own the newspapers. The press have no interest in upsetting their masters.

Pedallleur · 10/04/2020 14:06

Euro rich men from eastern Europe with escorts. Normal thing in European resorts but the French police packed them off. Pilots would be employed by the jet hire company so they should be fined

Tellmetruth4 · 10/04/2020 14:18

Yes the Guardian have reported on it but it’s not been widely reported and it happened last week.

Normal folk are being dragged through the coals for so much as adding an Easter egg to their shopping trolley and the globe trotters are carrying on as before whilst forcing their low paid staff into shitty situations. I read about Brazilian maids who were infected by their boss who continued to travel.

Why do they think the rules don’t apply to them? Do they think the virus only infects poor people.

You only need one twat to rock up to a private jet on an island and cause an outbreak.

J-Lo and her boyfriend used their connections to get a closed down gym opened for them last week, which meant that some poor cleaners had to go in before them and sanitise the place and go back to clean after and the gym staff also had to go in to work.

If these idiots on the private plane have only featured in one left leaning paper a week after the incident took place, how many more of them are out there prolonging the crisis? It’s not going to bother them if the crisis lasts a year because they probably have funds making money off of this.

I’d like to see more of these incidents on prime times tv news alongside stories of Doris who took her dog to the beach and had a sit down for 5 minutes.

The article says the helicopter pilots were fined, not the aeroplane pilots. Presumably the helicopter pilots were working for a French company and therefore come under French jurisdiction.

The holidaymakers were refused entry to the country. Don't know why you think they should be fined. There probably isn't a legally enforceable mechanism to fine people turned back from a border anyway.

Zilla1 · 10/04/2020 14:23

Are you sure it wasn't three young billionairesses taking five silver foxes/older males across borders for nefarious purposes, OP?

Lockheart · 10/04/2020 14:26

With respect OP, you're losing sense of perspective because these people are rich.

Under 10 rich people tried to go to France.

The police broke up over 600 parties in Manchester alone over the last week.

Now, ignoring all financial aspects, which do you think is the most damaging and which do you think involves more people and should be focussed on?

The reason the press appears skewed towards criticising normal people is because there are vastly more normal people than rich people and therefore there will be vastly more normal people than rich people breaking the rules.

Newspapers will publish advice such as "only go to the shop for essentials, don't have picnics in the park" because that applies to the vast majority of the population.

If they started publishing advice such as "don't throw parties on your yacht" it would be both ridiculous and frankly bugger all use.

No, these people shouldn't have tried to go to France. But the fact that it's not headline news is not a conspiracy. It's numbers.

SandAndSea · 10/04/2020 14:31

You lost me when you described the men as old. 50 isn't old.

SerendipityJane · 10/04/2020 15:00

Clearly I'm odd, but this is the bit which I wanted much more explanation of ...

They were sent back to London the same day.

where are they now ?

bettybattenburg · 10/04/2020 15:04

They should have been fined and not the pilots who presumably were told to do their job.

mochojoes · 10/04/2020 15:05

The selfish old men and their young girlfriends

Girlfriends? I think that's unlikely, that will be an awkward convo with their wives!

mindproject · 10/04/2020 15:07

You can bet the elite pedos are still flying around the world.

bettybattenburg · 10/04/2020 15:07

Apparently the jet was chartered by a Croatian w..sorry banker living in London.

notimagain · 10/04/2020 15:33

As Plexie has said the passengers were "simply" denied entry...the lack of appropriate paperwork should have been picked before leaving the UK ( and almost certainly would have been with an airline) but in the bizjet world where the Boss has hired or perhaps owns the aircraft I gather things can happen somewhat differently

The helicopter pilots would be bang to rights for a fine since they were French domestic and should have known they were facilitating what sounds like a unapproved journey..

Given according to reports one of the passengers declined to return directly to the UK and instead charted another aircraft to go elsewhere in Europe it sounds like some of the group were high rollers or very well connected.

Namechangervaver · 10/04/2020 15:37

It is being reported. It's on the front page of the Daily Mail online.

ARoseInHarlem · 10/04/2020 15:49

Do you really think celebrities or the ultra-rich are doing their own housework and childcare? That they have sent home their live-in cleaners and nannies and drivers? Or that they’ve let their dailies stay home? That they’re doing their own shopping or waiting for Ocado delivery slots?

It’s 2020. It should come as no surprise that there’s one rule for the rich, and another for the rest of us. Only us plebs are being quarantined. We’re flattening the curve by staying home, working and home schooling, so the rich people can carry on as usual and buy up whatever ventilators and tests there are to be had if they get sick.

It’s business as usual, basically.
