Should I have done food shop today before the bank hol weekend?

In the lead up to lockdown, DH and I have taken it in turns to do the food shop. We try to get enough to last 10-14 days.

Last shop was on 1st April. We're currently doing ok for food but, in the last few days we've made do with what we have and mealtimes have been far from exciting. We're both desperate for some 'treats'and generally more appealing meals.

I had planned to do a food shop on Friday but it dawned on me yesterday that it's Good Friday and bank hol weekend. I mentioned to DH that we should hold out until Tues and I'll go shopping then. Reason being I think the shops will be busier over the weekend, despite lockdown and due to the warm weather. I detest this queueing to get into the shop malarkey so I don't want a worse than necessary experience.

DH said I should have just gone today (sooner rather than later) because we don't have much food left as it is. What he means is we just have the shit food left. I pointed out that, while the food is boring, it's still taking up storage space. If I were to go today, I wouldn't be able to restock our kitchen very well as there won't be enough room. The whole point is to really try to limit food shops.

DH agreed but I can tell he's a bit miffed. He won't say thhis for obvious reasons. It's not about him pressuring me to do the shop as he'd happily go himself. More about getting more food.

My AIBU is:

YABU - the shops won't be any busier on Good Friday and, if you avoid the Friday, better to go sooner rather than later.

YANBU - the shops will be busier on Friday. Hold out until Tues since you have enough food.

What do you mean by “shit food”?

RarePackOfLooRoll · 09/04/2020 17:40

Here there was a 2 hour queue for 2 of our 6 Supermarkets in our town.
I think it's usually 30 minutes or so.
Evenings do tend to be quieter.

PleasantVille · 09/04/2020 17:40

Ime and talking to friends there is no way to predict when supermarkets will be busy, a friend's daughter works in Tesco and she says there's no pattern from one day to the next.

Personally I'd go when I need to, no point in trying to second guess what it will be like.

tiredanddangerous · 09/04/2020 17:40

Personally I’d be going on Friday. Things are miserable enough without Easter weekend with no treats.

ScarletPower · 09/04/2020 17:43

Go tomorrow. My local Morrisons have a queue at busy times which is about 80 metres long - today the queue had doubled round on itself. I haven't seen it like this before, even on the day these new measures started - I think everyone was going today because they expected Friday to be busy with it being the bank holiday.

Apple1029 · 09/04/2020 17:43

We got our food today. Why would you want to go out this weekend unnecessarily.
We also got our 'treats' in and can just relax this long weekend.

minisoksmakehardwork · 09/04/2020 17:44

The big supermarkets near me have seen a massive surge in shoppers today if FB is anything to go by. But I can understand the desire to have something nice to eat rather than just food as fuel.

In reality, the shops will only be closed on Sunday, so if you can hold out you are more likely to get what you want rather than what's left on the shelves.

Useryokyesno · 09/04/2020 17:45

Why can't you go now? Way less busy later on in the day. Its grim enough staying at home without decent food.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/04/2020 17:45

I went today and the queue was the longest I've seen it so I think everyone has the same idea.

Subeccoo · 09/04/2020 17:46

2.5 hours queue for Morrisons where I am when I walked past earlier.
I went to lidl later on and it was fine.
No pattern at all.
If I needed to go tomorrow I'd be going as early as possible op.

Cheerbear23 · 09/04/2020 17:47

The queue to get in Morrison’s near me is taking 60 mins. We’re leaving it until tomorrow or Saturday. Just got bread & milk from the spar.

Goldwispa · 09/04/2020 17:48

Hi. Why don't you go at 9 tonight. I had to get some dry nights for my little one and there was hardly anyone at Tesco

TurnOffTheTv · 09/04/2020 17:49

Just go now?

Goldwispa · 09/04/2020 17:50

I went last night

BarbaraofSeville · 09/04/2020 17:52

Massive queues near us today. I would probably go tomorrow or Saturday evening on the basis that there won't be a lot of choice but you should be able to get something to top up what you have in.

But there's really no need to go as long as 10-14 days if you're running out of food. It's not a competition. Once or even twice a week is absolutely fine.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/04/2020 17:54

Go this evening.

BogRollBOGOF · 09/04/2020 17:56

I've been shopping today. Both shops had longer queues than I've experienced recently (I can only buy bread in one supermarket, and it doesn't sell suitable "milk" so I have to shop across two shops)

Aldi was rather depleted on fruit and veg. More than the last couple of weeks.

Friday/ Saturday should be fine. Many like me have probably gone a day or two ahead of normal.

justasking111 · 09/04/2020 17:58

I went yesterday evening 7.30pm ten minute wait in the queue, my friend went at 4pm, hellishly long queue. I think folk settle in with wine and a few beers in the evening which is why I go then.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 09/04/2020 17:58

Why don't you go now? It'll probably be busier tomorrow.

bookmum08 · 09/04/2020 17:59

The shops will only be closed Sunday and people aren't going to be buying the usual large amount of 'Easter' food because they won't (or SHOULDN'T BE) having a big family meal. I can't imagine they are going to be any busier than they are at the moment - which really is just random and has no pattern. If you need to go then go. But it could be busy, it might not. It's all just random at the moment.

helgahelga · 09/04/2020 17:59

The queues were shocking today. 2 hours total in Morrisons (half hour in there, and 45 minute wait to get it and 45 minute wait to get to the checkouts... ) The queue of some 90-100 people/trollies was snaking all round the bloody aisles waiting for 11 tills as half the tills were shut because of social distancing. Then there was 6 or 7 things I couldn't get!

Around half hour wait to get my prescription from Boots, and half hour wait to get into effing B & M (to get the things I couldn't get from Morrisons!)

Shattered by the time I got home. Glad I went out though, as it means I don't need to go out now til Tuesday.

@FTMF30 Just go tomorrow if you want. Most places are open. You've missed nothing today. It was awful!

troppibambini · 09/04/2020 17:59

I went today and they queues were the longest I've seen... I could get most things.
Night time is definitely quieter but I found that quite a few things were not available especially fruit and veg.

stickerqueen · 09/04/2020 18:02

I tried to do our shopping today but wasn't the most Succesful shop I've ever done managed to get enough stuff for at least 1 week got a leg of lamb so that easter dinner sorted. the things I couldn't get was pasta, tin toms and noodles.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/04/2020 18:02

People who are going later in the day - are there still things left on the shelves? I'm getting fed up of queuing and would like to go when it's quieter but there's not much point if I can't get half the things I need.

Ariela · 09/04/2020 18:04

Quite often there's later deliveries, if you've useful people on your local FB contacts they can tip you off when the lorries are due in, if you give it half an hour much of that stock is out on the shelves when you arrive in the store
