Should I have done food shop today before the bank hol weekend?

In the lead up to lockdown, DH and I have taken it in turns to do the food shop. We try to get enough to last 10-14 days.

Last shop was on 1st April. We're currently doing ok for food but, in the last few days we've made do with what we have and mealtimes have been far from exciting. We're both desperate for some 'treats'and generally more appealing meals.

I had planned to do a food shop on Friday but it dawned on me yesterday that it's Good Friday and bank hol weekend. I mentioned to DH that we should hold out until Tues and I'll go shopping then. Reason being I think the shops will be busier over the weekend, despite lockdown and due to the warm weather. I detest this queueing to get into the shop malarkey so I don't want a worse than necessary experience.

DH said I should have just gone today (sooner rather than later) because we don't have much food left as it is. What he means is we just have the shit food left. I pointed out that, while the food is boring, it's still taking up storage space. If I were to go today, I wouldn't be able to restock our kitchen very well as there won't be enough room. The whole point is to really try to limit food shops.

DH agreed but I can tell he's a bit miffed. He won't say thhis for obvious reasons. It's not about him pressuring me to do the shop as he'd happily go himself. More about getting more food.

My AIBU is:

YABU - the shops won't be any busier on Good Friday and, if you avoid the Friday, better to go sooner rather than later.

YANBU - the shops will be busier on Friday. Hold out until Tues since you have enough food.

Why is your kitchen so full of "shit boring food" that you haven't got room to buy normal food?
I would go shopping this evening or tomorrow and do a mid sizedshop for the week. This week, alternate "shit" dinners and nice dinners. Then next Thursday/Friday do a big proper shop and don't buy any food that you don't actually want to eat.

DurhamDurham · 09/04/2020 18:06

I don't even try to go food shopping until about 6.30 on an evening, haven't had any problems with things being out of stock and there's not nearly so much queueing to be done. Friends have mentioned how long they've queued for and although I'm keen to fill the day I'd rather not spend it like that.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/04/2020 18:07

I'd go tonight (in fact, I am). The shops will be busy over the weekend and it may take a while to get re-stocked after a bank holiday weekend.

DogInATent · 09/04/2020 18:08

No problems shopping later in the day here, supermarkets generally well stocked with everything I'm looking for (inc. GF pasta and tinned tomatoes). I have been doing Wednesday afternoons but went Tuesday afternoon this week due to the holiday weekend. Midweek, mid-afternoon seems to be the best time most places. Every week the shelves have been getting fuller and the queues shorter. No queue at all Tuesday afternoon this week.

If you haven't shopped since the start of the month you're probably imagining things are far worse than they really are. But really, you should have shopped yesterday or Tuesday if you wanted things to be at their quietest.

Squirrelblanket · 09/04/2020 18:11

I would go tonight or very early tomorrow morning. The four day weekend is already going to be tough what with not being able to go anywhere, I'd at least want some nice food and treats in!

morecoffeerequired · 09/04/2020 18:11

Truly gigantic queues today - I think everyone decided not to wait for tomorrow thinking it would be busy, and went today instead. The queues were hundreds of yards long.

Oblomov20 · 09/04/2020 18:12

Bugger. Maybe I should have gone today. I will need to go first thing tomorrow!

Actionhasmagic · 09/04/2020 18:17

Do you have a local farm shop or co-op?

WeeMadArthur · 09/04/2020 18:18

I would go this evening if you can, the queues were long today, they will be longer tomorrow

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 09/04/2020 18:18

I work in a supermarket. I wish I could post the video I took of the queue today. Worst I’ve seen it so far.

There’s an awful lot of people who would be eating out / off down the pub this weekend who obviously cannot and therefore they’re cleaning us out of steaks, BBQ food and booze.

bridgetreilly · 09/04/2020 18:18

The rule is that you should go 'as infrequently as possible'. That is the same rule for everyone, although what it means in practice is obviously different for everyone. But what it always means for all of us, is that you have to get used to managing with what you've got, rather than popping out to get something else you fancy.

If you can wait until Tuesday, you should, OP.

cdtaylornats · 09/04/2020 18:21

Treats you can get from Amazon

FTMF30 · 09/04/2020 18:23

Ok, so I'm thinking I should just go tomorrow as initially planned or tonight. I always assumed the shelves would be barer in the evening but maybe I'm wrong!

By shit food I mean basic staple meals. There's meat/fish in the freezer and we have rice and pasta but hardly any veg or jars/ingredients for sauces.we also really want potatoes! It's getting pretty bland. We have no desserts or junk food, which I'm craving now more than ever. A frozen pizza is heaven to me at the moment! There's room in the freezer but I like it to get quite bare so we can fully restock, this stretching out the supermarket visits over time.

I’ve been going once a week (family of 6 and a small fridge/freezer so can’t go less often) but this week I went on Wednesday. Our shops are shut on Sunday and shorter hours tomorrow and Monday. I expected it to get busier closer to the weekend. It seems I was right - it was dead when I went yesterday. I’ve been going at 10/11am on Fridays but went at 1pm yesterday as that fitted in better with what the DC were up to (had been baking with them in the morning). I wonder if the timing might also have had something to do with it.

DogInATent · 09/04/2020 18:26

The rule is that you should go 'as infrequently as possible'.
There's going to be food poisoning events if people take this to an extreme, or get into competitive hair shirt shopping-less-frequently-than-you contests.

BakewellGin1 · 09/04/2020 18:27

Literally everyone near me appears to have gone today... Husband included because we didn't even consider it nearing a bank holiday... I'm heading to Aldi at 9 tonight to get few bits for baby while it's hopefully quiet

Flavabobble · 09/04/2020 18:28

A tip - some supermarket petrol stations carry a wide and varied range of food, same price as the main store. Without the massive queues.

GinDrinker00 · 09/04/2020 18:28

I’d go today or tomorrow early morning. I don’t think it’s anymore busy than what it’s been I went earlier and it wasn’t overly busy.

muddledmidget · 09/04/2020 18:28

Saturday straight after lunch is probably going to be the quietest time. Saturday afternoon/evening it will get busier as people go in looking for reductions as they do before every bank holiday closure. But as someone said previously there is no pattern to it at the moment, other than the first hour or vulnerable hour seem to be the busiest

dottiedodah · 09/04/2020 18:28

I must have been lucky today .S/B had small queue at around 8 30 am, and I managed to get everything I needed!(even eggs and flour!) Sometimes hard to tell really ,may be quiet tomorrow afternoon or even on Saturday ,if everyone shops early .They are open on Monday as well arent they?

Ohffs66 · 09/04/2020 18:28

I went to Tesco at 6.30am today. Not that many people there but it was so stressful as no-one was taking any notice of the measures they have put in place for social distancing. I burst into tears in the bakery aisle in the end as no-one would keep their distance and I panicked. Tbh I'm not convinced when you go will make much difference, it just depends how many twats are in there at the same time.

OhCaptain · 09/04/2020 18:30

Honestly, this is all shit enough without spending Easter weekend without even a chocolate button or a bottle of wine/gin!

I'd go tonight.

OhCaptain · 09/04/2020 18:31

I burst into tears in the bakery aisle in the end as no-one would keep their distance and I panicked.

Did you really? What did people do?!

opticaldelusion · 09/04/2020 18:32

The shops will only be closed Sunday and people aren't going to be buying the usual large amount of 'Easter' food because they won't (or SHOULDN'T BE) having a big family meal

You do realise that the same number of people will be eating don't you? This is an utterly nonsensical statement.

aut0replenish · 09/04/2020 18:39

I’m going tomorrow, it’s not going to be any worse.
