Should I have done food shop today before the bank hol weekend?

In the lead up to lockdown, DH and I have taken it in turns to do the food shop. We try to get enough to last 10-14 days.

Last shop was on 1st April. We're currently doing ok for food but, in the last few days we've made do with what we have and mealtimes have been far from exciting. We're both desperate for some 'treats'and generally more appealing meals.

I had planned to do a food shop on Friday but it dawned on me yesterday that it's Good Friday and bank hol weekend. I mentioned to DH that we should hold out until Tues and I'll go shopping then. Reason being I think the shops will be busier over the weekend, despite lockdown and due to the warm weather. I detest this queueing to get into the shop malarkey so I don't want a worse than necessary experience.

DH said I should have just gone today (sooner rather than later) because we don't have much food left as it is. What he means is we just have the shit food left. I pointed out that, while the food is boring, it's still taking up storage space. If I were to go today, I wouldn't be able to restock our kitchen very well as there won't be enough room. The whole point is to really try to limit food shops.

DH agreed but I can tell he's a bit miffed. He won't say thhis for obvious reasons. It's not about him pressuring me to do the shop as he'd happily go himself. More about getting more food.

My AIBU is:

YABU - the shops won't be any busier on Good Friday and, if you avoid the Friday, better to go sooner rather than later.

YANBU - the shops will be busier on Friday. Hold out until Tues since you have enough food.

We do our food shop every Monday so got all our Easter treats in and can relax. Why would you not be organised?

SanFrancisco49er · 09/04/2020 19:52

Go in the evening, its generally much quieter. Maybe dont leave it til Tues as I'm guessing a lot of people will have bought for the Easter weekend and will go back then.

funnylittlefloozie · 09/04/2020 19:52

Why would you not be organised?

If the wind changes, you'll be stuck with that dreadful smug face. Not everyone is as perfect as you.

Mumto1girl3boys · 09/04/2020 20:07

I live in a busy city and for the 1st 2 hours of opening time theres no queue for asda, so i tend to go 1st thing in the morning

mencken · 09/04/2020 20:16

does that 'busy times' feature on google actually give usable data? Might be worth a look if it does.

Sparklingbrook · 09/04/2020 20:18

If you were 'organised' and bought fresh fruit and veg on Monday some of it won't be fit for Easter.

Neveranynamesleft · 09/04/2020 20:19

By the time the OP had typed out the 'should we shouldn't we could we couldnt we' nonsense they could have been and done the bloomin shop. Not like it's in the middle of the night and no shops open.

I’ve been going to the shops at about 7 or 8pm and manage to get most things I need!

Things like eggs tend to not be available - but I managed to get them today in a health food shop (also managed to get flour in a bakery I passed on the walk home)

I’ve not had trouble with With getting food nor have a queued even once to get into a shop - I just come back later if there was a queue

northernlittledonkey · 09/04/2020 20:22

Our supermarket queues were bonkers!

Iwantacookie · 09/04/2020 20:22

My local supermarket was that busy today I actually asked the staff what would happen to the allowed time on my car (3 hours) and would I be fined. They said no.

OhTheRoses · 09/04/2020 20:24

Why didn't I go Monday? Well because I'm working from home from 8am to 7pm Mon to Friday. Went last Saturday lunchtime and queue was long (about 25 mins). Going tomorrow morning. Really looking forward to it. It's my outing at present.

Shopping for 4 adults all wfh and they are big shops - possibly even industrial.

Very very nice food is our only treat at present.

bookmum08 · 09/04/2020 20:32

optical what I meant was quite a lot of families seem to do an almost Xmas dinner style Easter Sunday meal and have grandparents and siblings etc round (my family has never done this though). That won't be happening this year so even if a family does decide to do a fancy Sunday Dinner it's going to be on a much smaller scale and people won't have the need to be buying a trolleys worth of food just for one family dinner.

BreconBeBuggered · 09/04/2020 20:45

The shops are much better stocked now, it's true, but I don't think it's that sensible to run down your supplies altogether before venturing out to re-stock your freezer and cupboards. It seems to me there are different restrictions on the amounts you can buy every time you go out, and sometimes popular things just aren't available at all.
There were tonnes of Easter eggs about today, but not a real egg in sight, for instance.
Whether you should have gone shopping today is moot now, but I will say the queues were longer than I've ever seen here, and I never go at busy times myself.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/04/2020 20:45

I've been going weekly in the morning but went this evening instead and was quite excited to find soap and hand sanitiser for the first time in three weeks!

browzingss · 09/04/2020 20:49

@mencken it does, however that feature has been around for years so includes lots of data from when things were normal, so it might not necessarily be accurate for lockdown. As time passes it will become more accurate for lockdown as it will take into account the changes more accurately.

FTMF30 · 09/04/2020 20:54

I didn't go today in the end. I was being too indecisive and, between doing dinner, catching up on work, then getting DS ready for bed while DH caught up on work, there just hasn't been the time.

The votes are close but I think I will just go tomorrow.

BTW, when I said 'shit food', I mostly meant things that are crap on their own without something to jazz it up. We mostly have meat and carbs, not much sauce, spices, nice veg, fruit, etc. And there's no treats. Ive even become tempted by DS' fruit purees.

In terms of letting the cupboards get bare, I just mean making ample room to restock. It just wouldn't work for us to constantly have full cupboards, we'd be going much more than once every two weeks.

It seems by the vote that DH had a point and I'm being a lockdown fuddy duddy. I'll put an end to the war time style rationing 🤷‍♀️.

Also, we do have local shops but I just feel that if I go to a local, i might aswell do a big shop whilst I'm out.

I hope you managed to get out today and that you are suitably stocked up with Easter treats and nice food now!

CSIblonde · 10/04/2020 18:12

Do your 'daily exercise' to corner shop for Easter treats? Then shop Monday pm, supposedly when supermarkets say its quiet.

JaceLancs · 10/04/2020 18:45

I go either at 8.30 in morning or at 7pm and have has very few problems either queuing or not getting what I need
I’m also shopping for DM 81 with Alzheimer’s and NDN 80
Apart from today I’m working from home 9.30 till 6.30

FTMF30 · 10/04/2020 19:24

@caperplips I did! I went after 11. There was a bit of a queue to get in but not the horror I'd imagined. Had a lovely dinner so definitely feel glad I braved the shops today.
