to do my next lot of food shopping at M&S food?

It’s actually my nearest food shop, in 5 mins walking distance.

I haven’t been in physical proximity to anyone except DP and DS since 11 March. None of us are ill.

I am not of the opinion that ‘essentials’ means bread, milk and veg - food is essential. I like M&S food products and can afford to keep the economy and stock turnover going a bit.

I will not be dawdling, chatting to anyone or handling any products that I don’t purchase.

I miss their hot cross buns: before social distancing and lockdown began, had been working my way through the different flavours.

I did our food shopping there last week and it was very civilised. Full shelves and nothing I needed was out of stock. When I went to pay I was given one of t owe mini gardening pots and mentioned that our toddler granddaughter (who lives with us) loves them and the lovely cashier gave me 20 of them to keep her occupied at home during lockdown. I know they're probably dishing them out to everyone and have relaxed the 'spend £20' rule but I was so happy to take them home to one happy little girl.

Iamtryingtobenicehere · 09/04/2020 13:26

Not really sure what you’re asking here op! Are you asking permission to buy food?

mochojoes · 09/04/2020 13:28

We tend to shop there anyway as it's my preferred option.

Remember it's not just food shopping during a pandemic, this is M&S food shopping during a pandemic with orderly queues, disinfected trolleys & baskets & smily staff!

WrathofFaeKIopp · 09/04/2020 13:28

Go to M&S for your pork pies by all means, just steer clear of the lingerie chAnging room where there is no Guarantee that you won't bumP into a
male bodied woman.

Take care.

MrsFezziwig · 09/04/2020 13:34

Quite fancying a Dine in for Two...

Me too, and there’s only one of me!

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 09/04/2020 13:34

I love M&S for food and it’s next door to the supermarket here so not an extra journey if I wanted to go. Currently having everything delivered but if I did need to go to the actual shops then I’d not think twice about M&S.

Titsywoo · 09/04/2020 13:35

I'm shopping there now. I can afford it and never have to queue to get in and the shelves are always well stocked.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 09/04/2020 13:35

Is this an attempt to get that intentionally misinterpreted argument about essentials going?
Not going well, I see...

Gazelda · 09/04/2020 13:37

Loads of food is (generously) being donated to Food Banks because it is not being purchased, sadly some of this is fresh produce which is harder to distribute.

@Ragwort, our m&s is giving their end-of-day fresh stuff to local care homes. I've been hugely impressed with their flexibility, resourcefulness and generosity during lockdown.

Queenoftheashes · 09/04/2020 13:37

I much prefer shopping at M&S. About to go there and the butcher. Don’t understand your reluctance really. It’s not like it’s paperchase or that pointless tiger shop that sells plastic crap destined for the oceans.

I forgot to put in the thread title. Also it must be just me and a handful of others who are glancing at the Coronavirus topic with a Hmm expression.

Thanks to all who noticed the tongue-in-cheek tone - will try harder to not be a smartarse next time!

I'm itching to go to ours. I need a few portions of their potato dauphanoise.

Cheerbear23 · 09/04/2020 13:41

Why do people think you can only buy ‘essentials’ where food is concerned? Is it me that’s misunderstood?
If I want to buy biscuits, crisps and chocolates surely I can do? If I want to buy M&S over Asda smart price, surely that’s ok?
No one has said we have to exist on gruel & water during lockdown have they?

LilacTree1 · 09/04/2020 13:42

“ Has everybody lost all sense?”

Yes.

WeeMadArthur · 09/04/2020 13:43

I was there this morning and the customer in front of me at the tills had been shouted at by another customer for buying Easter eggs as they weren’t essential!

JumpingOnTheBed · 09/04/2020 13:43

I think anyone saying ‘why wouldn’t you?’ hasn’t seen a lot of the Coronavirus threads where the very idea of buying a food shop that includes treats and nice snacks rather than bread, milk and spinach is veeeeery frowned upon!

But they are batshit crazy and need to get off the internet.

Oh thank Christ, I’m starting to think everyone has lost their mind. David Icke looks sane and reasonable compared to MN right now.

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 09/04/2020 13:45

Don’t. I went into mine for essentials today and it was crowded with rude people shoving and grabbing.

LilacTree1 · 09/04/2020 13:45

And the Northampton police chief is saying he might start to look in baskets. We’ve got to do something about the crazy.

cathyandclare · 09/04/2020 13:46

I do all my shops there now. Calm, organised and loads of lovely stuff. I got all the essentials and also Easter chocs, wine and lilies. It is expensive but the fresh produce seems to last longer and nothing goes to waste.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 09/04/2020 13:47

YABU but just for asking, whyever not?

Orangeblossom78 · 09/04/2020 13:48

I'll share my experience of going 2 days ago, city centre M&S

No queue, lady outside smiling, tells me she had just sanitised the baskets with wipes and to go round to the left to the food hall.

There is about 2 other people in the food hall, all well stocked, a few reductions but not many.

Get things for elderly neighbour, specific hams, cheese and the like. Most in stock. Some easter eggs. 3 for 2.

Noticed the freezer section is well stocked also which might be useful if you have children. I don't drive, but if I did would have been good. Although quite expensive.

I got to the checkouts and used the self checkout, I was the only one there and only one was open. I asked the man there if it was this quiet usually in recent days and he said yes. He then started calling out to a couple about viral load and staying out of the aisle which was a bit stressful as he started saying about it killing cashiers but I guess it is stressful for them at the moment.

But apart from that it was quite stress free.
