to do my next lot of food shopping at M&S food?

It’s actually my nearest food shop, in 5 mins walking distance.

I haven’t been in physical proximity to anyone except DP and DS since 11 March. None of us are ill.

I am not of the opinion that ‘essentials’ means bread, milk and veg - food is essential. I like M&S food products and can afford to keep the economy and stock turnover going a bit.

I will not be dawdling, chatting to anyone or handling any products that I don’t purchase.

I miss their hot cross buns: before social distancing and lockdown began, had been working my way through the different flavours.

AIBU?

Lots of people in my town have been going to B&M because the queues are a lot shorter, if they even exist, to get into the store. No reason why you wouldn't use whichever shop suited you to get your groceries. I don't stick to one supermarket to get all my shopping. I just don't visit on the same day if I can help it.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/04/2020 12:45

I'll be going myself tomorrow, M&S has lovely food - except the tuna pate which they've changed. Waitrose is best for that.

Still can't get Tesco Pure skimmed milk though.

1066vegan · 09/04/2020 12:46

I really want some M and S hot cross buns now. We only shopped a few days ago so too soon for another shop. 😕

walchesterweasel · 09/04/2020 12:46

The M&S by me is attached to a petrol garage. I haven't been but well organised, shut during shelf stacking for example. Deliveroo are also delivering from M&S outlets for no charge , sadly for me not operational here but might be useful for some.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 09/04/2020 12:48

Is it stealth advertising for M&S?

PickAChew · 09/04/2020 12:49

They're actually the best stocked so not unreasonable at all. And their hot cross buns are just a quid, today. Everywhere is insanely busy today, mind, so prepare to queue.

BreconBeBuggered · 09/04/2020 12:49

YABU to show of about M&S being your closest food shop. It's a good 12 minute drive to my nearest M&S food hall, and we have a family birthday this weekend, but as I have a Morrison's about half a mile away, I feel morally obliged to do my shopping in there, unless the ILs want something out of Aldi.
I'm longing to gorge myself on jelly caterpillars and apricot danish. For breakfast.

coconuttelegraph · 09/04/2020 12:50

I'm sure one of the daily press conferences confirmed that no one is allowed to shop at M & S foodhalls, NOT!

Why on earth would you think that you can't go to a shop that's open? Covidiocy isn't confined to gatherings and sunbathing it seems Grin

Greenmarmalade · 09/04/2020 12:52

But whatever you like. I’m buying whatever food we want/is available!

People thinking we should only buy essentials are missing the point.

MinorArcana · 09/04/2020 12:53

Going to M&S for food sounds fine, I can’t see why you shouldn’t shop there.

I’d also guess it’s likely to be quieter than a normal supermarket because the food’s more expensive.

Duckingell · 09/04/2020 12:54

I want to shop at M & S now. Ours is quite good but shares the car park with Aldi and Home Bargains so is often hectic trying to get in and out with the car.

Quite fancying a Dine in for Two...

Orangeblossom78 · 09/04/2020 12:55

I'd go, but maybe use the self checkouts? But don't worry so much.

Zaphodsotherhead · 09/04/2020 12:55

Sigh.

One last time.

The shopping trip has to be essential (ie, you haven't been for several days, run out of butter/milk/sugar. The shopping you do whilst you are out does not. You can put any amount of hot cross buns in your basket.

I'm getting a bit fed up with saying it now.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 09/04/2020 12:55

Don't stress about what you're buying –if it's for sale it can be bought. I chucked a birthday cake, Easter eggs and deli treats into my trolley yesterday. No one's policing your basket in real life.

PumpkinParent · 09/04/2020 12:57

I went to M&S this morning. The queue for Asda and Tesco was half a mile long. It was more expensive but I was in and out much quicker and there were fewer people in the store. I justified it on the basis that if we were going to be in the house over the sunniest Easter weekend in a while, we were going to eat nice food.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 09/04/2020 13:00

Spend as little time in there as you possibly can. It makes your own queuing time shorter if everybody does it...

The trouble is, in most supermarkets there is not room to pass other shoppers with a 2m gap, so you're stuck all following each other up and down the one way system. Not to mention having to wait for staff stocking shelves to move out of the way too.

Have to say the best experience I've had since this began has been in Waitrose. But there is a M&S food hall nearer so maybe I'll give that a go next week.

Orangeblossom78 · 09/04/2020 13:00

I went 2 days ago and it was totally empty

TheOrigBrave · 09/04/2020 13:00

I don't normally shop in Waitrose, but I am doing grocery shopping for a vulnerable person at the moment and he loves Waitrose, so it make sense to do mine there too.

Having said that, I did it the other way last week. Got HIS stuff from Aldi (he's an Aldi snob).

We're all just doing what we need to do.

Sooverthemill · 09/04/2020 13:01

Ignore the idiots who think we can only drink water and eat pasta during the lockdown. Food is essential, nice food enhances a shit situation

Washyourhandsyoufilthyanimal · 09/04/2020 13:02

No you can’t, you’re supposed to be living of coal and the tears of children in this time.

pigsDOfly · 09/04/2020 13:03

I really don't understand why you're asking OP.

It's a food shop, selling food. You need food, so you go to a food shop to buy food.

What's the problem?

Do you think they've stocked their shelves in the hope that no one will buy anything and they can throw it all away?

Murinae · 09/04/2020 13:09

Our nearest M&S is about 10 miles away. Kids were asking yesterday if they could drive there and get some of their favourite foods. I said no as the local Sainsburys is a two minute drive and the police were doing road blocks on the duel carriageway you need to drive down to M&S yesterday and I don’t think they would agree that it was an essential journey.

APatchyTomCat · 09/04/2020 13:11

So you think you might be unreasonable in going to your nearest food shop, to shop for food. Okay... Confused

SpicedCamomile · 09/04/2020 13:11

I had an email from M and S today touting its roasts, its gastropub meal offer, and "why not pick up some lovely tulips while you are here"? I am definitely thinking of doing the next shop there. It's ten mins walk away.

I8toys · 09/04/2020 13:12

I go every Wednesday - really quiet and always has stock. Great to have fresh baked goods as well.
