Disgusting behavior in swimming pool changing rooms!

Returned to the U.K. a few months ago and took the kids swimming to an indoor water park with a ‘changing village’.

The facilities were not sex separated and everyone goes into cubicles to change. And that is when things got nasty.

Instead of having a decent shower and getting clean before entering the pool people just stood under a shower IN THEIR SWIMWEAR for a few seconds. No attempt made to wash sweaty bum cracks or armpits. Most women did not even bother to wet their hair!

How horrible to swim in a soup of shit, smeg, sweat, hairspray and toe-jam. This also meant the amount of chlorine in the water was insane, burned my eyes and I nearly crashed the car on the way home!

Who thinks this is a good way to do things???

There was a young man masturbating in our communal showers. He was atching the young women in bikinis who were unaware.

I complained but the staff laughed and said eww gross....sorry.

That was it, seriously.

This is what I love about the UK. Everyone agrees it’s disgusting and shit, but still defends it to the hilt. Weird. (I am British)

BigRedBoat · 08/04/2020 13:00

I'd rather take my chances in the people soup than have a member of staff supervise my shower Shock

Astrabees · 08/04/2020 13:00

Are you Icelandic? When I visited Iceland I discovered that a naked shower with vigorous soaping of the parts shown on a poster was mandatory. I'm not entirely sure it was a price worth paying for a swim in the natural springwater. I always have a full shower or bath at home before I set out for the pool, to ensure my bum crack is pristine!

Fluffybutter · 08/04/2020 13:00

Fucking hell, if this is what you get worked up about months later then you must be going absolutely batshit at the current state of affairs ..

1066vegan · 08/04/2020 13:01

Thanks for starting the thread. Now I know to avoid swimming pools when I'm abroad in case there is enforced naked showering. It sounds horrific. Thank goodness I live in the UK where we're too upright for that.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 08/04/2020 13:02

If you can smell “chlorine” in a pool then it’s more likely that there isn’t enough rather than too much.
It’s actually not chlorine you smell it’s Chloramines and nitrogen trichloride when the Chlorine is breaking down due to reactions with urine and skin oils in the water.
More chlorine, less odour, less irritated eyes.

NewHorizons2020 · 08/04/2020 13:03

I lived in Germany for decades, visited normal baths and never saw any compulsory naked shower, pre swimming signs ?

Yurona · 08/04/2020 13:03

German pools have the same chemicals as british ones...

WakeAndBake · 08/04/2020 13:03

@Wannabangbang

The point of this thread? To kill some time, have a bit of a laugh/debate. Have you got a more appropriate topic to discuss?

You would be more than welcome to join me on my planet but the borders are closed.

I honestly don't care. I know pools are minging, that's why I thoroughly shower when I get home. When DS was a baby (about 4/5 months old) I took him to swimming lessons and he threw up in the pool, it was mainly milk with a few chunks which got fished out with a net. The milky water remained and no one gave a toss!

Yurona · 08/04/2020 13:04

And definitely no enforced naked showering. Not in a swimming pool!
Saunas are different, but they also offer female only/male only and mixed sessions so you can choose what you are comfortable with

Aesopfable · 08/04/2020 13:05

I know several ozone pools and an outdoor one with no chemicals at all abroad

How do you swim with no chemicals at all? I find the presence of a lot of H2O rather necessary for a swim.

MamaBearOnLockdown · 08/04/2020 13:05

esp Germany, so refreshing without the chemicals. Confused

WHICH swimming pool in Germany doesn't have "chemicals" in it?
I have yet to go to any of those, so please do tell us.

IcedPurple · 08/04/2020 13:05

Chlorine doesn’t kill germs as far as I can’t tell. Used to get a monthly cold from the virgin active pool.

Of course chlorine kills germs! That's what it's for.

And the fact that you used to get colds - a very common ailment - in no way proves the swimming pool water was the source. You could have picked it up in the changing rooms or any number of other places.

Srslydontgiveacrap · 08/04/2020 13:05

Why not build your own pool in the back garden?

BarbaraofSeville · 08/04/2020 13:06

NewHorizons

I've seen the signs in Lalandia in Denmark and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. I haven't been to Germany myself so may have erroneously grouped it together with the other countries.

I expect the signs at Lalandia and the Blue Lagoon are for the benefit of filthy non showering Brits.

Mapless · 08/04/2020 13:07

FWIW I agree with you OP. At least shower beforehand. At my private gym I regularly see groups of men jump into the pool straight from the steam room to 'cool down'. Groups of sweaty, hairy folk using the pool to get rid of grimy sweat. Not nice! I don't think many Brits will soap up to get into a pool just yet. One day!

fascinated · 08/04/2020 13:07

Hah ha . You’re right. H2O is indeed a chemical.

DefConOne · 08/04/2020 13:08

I have found showering behaviour exactly the same in France, The Netherlands and Germany and not just from Brits. The only place where thorough naked showering was enforced was in Iceland in single sex changing rooms. And only in the local pool, was more relaxed in the tourist friendly Blue Lagoon.

banivani · 08/04/2020 13:09

Oh I'm with you OP, that is disgusting. It also means that they need to use more chlorine in the pools to keep them sanitary, which is more irritating/damaging for skin. I am Scandinavian and sadly we are going the same way here, with people coyly rinsing themselves off a little while wearing their swimwear before heading to the pool. Envy

Natsku · 08/04/2020 13:11

They have signs up in my local pool in Finland. They're a recent thing though, only in the last couple of years. They have pictures of the bits you need to wash which makes me giggle. No staff watching you though, the showering is enforced by peer pressure - no one wants to be thought of as filthy.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/04/2020 13:11

I do the 'stand under the shower in my costume' thing and am shocked that some people don't even do that, not just to remove any grime or bodily fluids but also to remove added chemicals.

I can often be swimming lengths, more or less oblivious to what is going on outside my lane, and then realise that someone new must have got in because I can smell/taste their perfume/deodorant/after shave. It's horrible.

Lockdown2020 · 08/04/2020 13:13

Well when lockdown is over, I suggest you go down to the pool and shower naked with your shampoo and shower gel in front of everyone to make an example of what people SHOULD be doing.

WakeAndBake · 08/04/2020 13:14

@Fluffybutter Fucking hell, if this is what you get worked up about months later then you must be going absolutely batshit at the current state of affairs ..

On the contrary, everything is fine here. We can go out as much as we like, there are no queues or restrictions at the supermarkets and I am at home on full pay looking after dd while my partner works from home.

The only problem is it is a bit boring and so I though it would be fun to have a thread where everyone could moan/feel superior/forget about the virus for a while.
