To ask DH to cut my hair?

mymoonmyman2020 · 07/04/2020 14:38

I have really long hair that I am not enjoying in lockdown - uses loads of shampoo, takes ages to dry etc.

WIBU to ask DH to cut me a ‘long bob’ with the kitchen scissors?*

*Disclaimer I fully realise this is probably the least important thing in the world right now.

You’re not unreasonable to ask him to cut it shorter, but to ask for a specific cut is probably pushing it!

mymoonmyman2020 · 07/04/2020 14:42

Ha! Yes I was thinking of showing him a photo from a magazine... Grin

I cut mine yesterday! If there had been someone else to do the back it would have been SO much easier. Could you section it yourself and just ask him to cut the back, then you can do the sides yourself to line up? (And hopefully get the sort of shape you're after!)

dotnetmum · 07/04/2020 14:48

Ok so the key to a good bob is the straight line across the bottom, which is really hard to do well, especially with inappropriate scissors. So either reset you expectations or just tie the hair up for now!! Grin

OstrichRunning · 07/04/2020 14:48

I did this. Asked for a long bob too.

Length is fine but I'm pretty sure it's the worst haircut I've ever had Grin However, I don't regret it. Makes life easier and no one can see me from this distance anyway, except my family and they're used to me looking like crap

OscarWildesCat · 07/04/2020 14:49

I cut mine, I'd been growing out pixie crop and it got just past my ears, I used hairdressing scissors and thinning scissors (I'm not a hairdresser!) to cut my pixie back in, I'm happy with it but figured if it went tits up nobody was seeing me anyway. What's the worst that can happen?, if it's long enough to tie up you can do that till you can get a hairdresser to fix it.

Watch this video - much better than the mumsnet haircut!
YakkityYakYakYak · 07/04/2020 14:54

Depends how upset you will be if it looks terrible as that’s the risk you are taking.

Personally I’d just wait and have it done properly after lockdown. It takes a long time for stylists to learn how to cut hair properly, I really don’t think it’s as easy as people think to just do at home.

I was due to have my hair done this week, the greys are really coming through and it looks awful, but there’s no way I’ll be trying to colour it myself. Ill just put up with it until I can see a professional.

UnfinishedSymphon · 07/04/2020 15:36

Could he do it with clippers, there's lots of videos on Facebook of hairdressers using clippers to cut really long hair at the bottom to get a straight line right across

wineandcheeseplease · 07/04/2020 15:59

Following as I want to cut mine and ask dh to do the back

Saladd0dger · 07/04/2020 16:06

You can buy a cutting guide on amazon. I got 1 coming this week.

RoseDog · 07/04/2020 16:13

Dp cut mine at the weekend, I have a crea clip, I think it's called and use it to put layers in the front then dp uses the clippers to do a straight line along the back and he tidies up any stray bits with scissors, I felt so much better after losing about 6 inches off the back, mine was just straggly and quite long!

Dp does a job that involves a lot of work with his hands and being very steady and precise so I trust him not to totally muck it up!

SumAndSubstance · 07/04/2020 16:14

I get my DH to do this normally Grin

LuckyMarmiteLover · 07/04/2020 16:15

Dad trimmed my fringe today and I’m quite pleased Smile

JKScot4 · 07/04/2020 16:17

We are only two weeks in, why are ppl panicking about haircuts? Did your long hair not annoy you when you were having to go to work every day?

TreacherousPissFlap · 07/04/2020 16:30

I did DH's - it's the closest we have come to a proper argument during lockdown Grin

itsamadmadworld · 07/04/2020 19:19

I came on here to tag brad mondo too, I'm gathering up the confidence to ask my partner to do it, he's happily do it but ive messed up his hair before and I'm not sure if he'd try to get payback whilst nobody can see it 😂

Hepzibar · 07/04/2020 19:25

YA not only U, but insane!

ladybee28 · 07/04/2020 19:26

Curious why lockdown is meaning your hair is getting on your nerves more than usual - can you elaborate, OP? I've been loving the fact that lockdown means I need to do less than usual with mine...

Funkyslippers · 07/04/2020 19:30

I could really do with a trim but I'm going to wait until my hairdressers is open. To keep it in its best condition I'm using a really good conditioner, only washing it every couple of days and not using a hairdryer or straighteners. Hardly anyone sees me so it's fine, and quite liberating. No makeup either!

Tink88 · 07/04/2020 19:33

Reading posts like this make think we've been on lockdown for 6 months

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/04/2020 19:33

YABU if we don’t get before and after pix.

DH is doing my fringe tonight but it only needs a trim and he’s done it before.

I’ve offered to tidy his up but so far he’s declined Grin

Half the men from his work are giving in to shaved heads which has brightened up their conference calls no end.

TeapotCollection · 07/04/2020 19:36

Watching with great interest as I’m in exactly the same position. I’ve been meaning to get it done since before Christmas and it’s getting really bad

EL8888 · 07/04/2020 19:48

I think a specific style is rather ambitious? I would just ask for a haircut unless he has experience in this area? My Fiancé dyed my hair recently and did a good job after lots of coaching from me. I’ve had worse dye jobs in a salon

BinkySodPlop · 07/04/2020 19:52

Can you lean forward over a chair, until your hair length on the floor is what you want, then cut it yourself / ask him to cut it without moving your head - using the floor as a marker?
