To ask DH to cut my hair?

mymoonmyman2020 · 07/04/2020 14:38

I have really long hair that I am not enjoying in lockdown - uses loads of shampoo, takes ages to dry etc.

WIBU to ask DH to cut me a ‘long bob’ with the kitchen scissors?*

*Disclaimer I fully realise this is probably the least important thing in the world right now.

If you like the hacked, uneven, "husband" look!

But then no one is going to care except possibly you.

scaryreading · 07/04/2020 20:02

I've pinned my fringe back, with a clip and am tempted to grow out my colour, ideal time.

I've ordered deep headbands

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 07/04/2020 20:07

It's called the mumsnet bob self isolation special

Maisieme · 07/04/2020 20:12

My husband cut the back of mine yesterday, he said it’s just like cutting a hedge. He did a good job.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 20:16

I cut mine. Over the head, into the hairband. Cut by the hairband. Let out, sort any hair which managed to escape the cut. I have really long hair so it's easy peasy

@CodenameVillanelle I did wonder what happened to singers from Backstreet boys 😂 Now I know. They do haircuts

CodenameVillanelle · 07/04/2020 20:20
Grin Brad Mondo is lovely. He knows what he's on about too
OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 20:23

@CodenameVillanelle he does sound like a fun dude!

Sissymate2 · 07/04/2020 20:28

😂😂😂😂
@mymoonmyman2020
Thanks for the giggle... Your post just reminded me of when my DH decided it was time to give DS1 his first ever haircut😭. DS was about 11 months old and had the most adorable little curls all over his head. DHHmm popped baby in his highchair, gave him a lolly and started chopping away....I was horrified...he'd pull a curl out straight and then just lop it off right next to poor DSs scalp...he was finished with his masterpiece in about 1 minute flat....DS was transfixed and puzzled as by now his lolly was covered in bits of beautiful baby curls and his usually relaxed mummy was completely unhinged.
Instead of a nice little boy do, his head was covered with bald patches. Of course, DH hands me the scissors and says. "Go ahead if you think you can do a proper job" oh sure...now that DS looked like a giant moth had gotten ahold of his head, DH hands me the scissors! Needless to say this was last time I let my DH do any home haircuts.💇‍♂️💇‍♂️💇‍♂️💇‍♀️💇‍♀️💇‍♀️🦲✂️✂️✂️

That youtube video that @CodenameVillanelle attached looked very helpful..
.maybe you and DH could make it a couple's activity like Brad Mondo suggested. Please send before and after photos....who knows, your DH might discover his hidden talent and become the new hairdresser to the celebrities when this is all over

Undecided91 · 07/04/2020 20:32

I kind of get it why men would need a haircut now but women??? Its only been 2weeks not 2 years

TreacherousPissFlap · 07/04/2020 20:36

I was due a haircut just over 4 weeks ago and my hairdresser had already stopped as the advice was already there to self distance. Admittedly he was quicker off the block than lots of salons, but my hair is short and quite styled so is driving me potty already.

Sissymate2 · 07/04/2020 20:37

Oh, and btw, your DH couldn't possibly do any worse than some of the professionals I've had cut my hair....somehow sometimes I haven't been able to explain the look I was trying to achieve even when I showed photos of myself with a style that I wanted to repeat. My problem was either my good hairdressers would retire or we would move to a different area so I have had to find a new hairdresser several times. So Carry on, OP!

LuckyLuckyWoman · 07/04/2020 21:01

I have lots of hair, long and really thick..... and coloured to within and inch of it's life:) I'm embracing lockdown to see what happens to it. Taking regular pictures to document the growth/grey :)

Sissymate2 · 07/04/2020 21:08

My first and last professional cuts!
I swear my mum didnt request the Frankenstein look.
And in the photo with the long hair...I had requested a balayage and absolutely no layers....got layers..no balayage and a bill for $260! I was in such a panic that I threw the money down and ran out....what was done was doneHmmConfused

Sorry for the double post of photos...😂 I'm sure you didn't need to see them twice!

speakout · 07/04/2020 21:12

Do it.

I cut my own hair for decades.

It grows again- no permanent damage will be done.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 07/04/2020 21:13

This may be outing. I don't trust professional hairdressers since one made me look like a penis. A top of the freaking penis.
"I would like it short and with layers"
"Sure"
Freaking penis.

MaggieAndHopey · 07/04/2020 21:14

You could try that ponytail haircut method that was all the rage a while ago. It's probably not as foolproof as it sounds though.

I do cut my own hair but it's very short so probably a lot easier than long straight hair.

longtompot · 07/04/2020 21:24

I'm thinking of cutting my ala mumsnet pony tail cut as its been over a year since I last had it cut and it's a mess. Its bra strap length, and I'm growing out my colour to start again from fresh.

GotTheCityOnLockdown · 07/04/2020 22:29

If you are going to do it please, please order some hairdressing scissors (only cheap from Amazon.)
It makes all the difference as they're much, much sharper.

An unqualified person cutting a great deal of length off with kitchen scissors is never going to end well!

Sissymate2 · 08/04/2020 01:36

Just curious...are your boys going to be growing their hair out ala 60's and 70's style, MNetters? I adore man buns...both of my grown sons have past shoulder length hair

Sandinyourshoes · 08/04/2020 02:45

I’ve been cutting mine for years, two mirrors facing each other in the bathroom, stand between them so I can see the back of my head, slice off end of ponytail and trim any long ends. Then cut straight across a lower section at nape of neck a bit shorter. Its so much easier than visiting a hairdresser and getting the cut they decide I should get. I suspect its a lot cheaper as well, but I haven’t been to find out.

user1473878824 · 08/04/2020 04:05

If DP tried to cut my hair I would suddenly be an expert in martial arts and I’d be asking someone if they were laying a patio. Don’t. Risk. It.

PhilCornwall1 · 08/04/2020 05:18

I've got to colour my wife's hair on Friday, should be a laugh. Hers is bright red, so I think she's going to end up looking like roadkill by the time I have finished.
