How are you dealing with exchanging Easter eggs/birthday presents.

Easter this week (obviously) and my DC’s birthday are coming up. Relatives are insistent they are going to drop Easter eggs and presents to the door.. (won’t come in obviously or get close obviously). Aibu to think this shouldn’t happen as it’s not essential? I live about 10 miles away from family. DC can wait - they have enough from us. I know they don’t want to feel like they are letting the children down but imo it’ll be something for them to look forward to when this finishes - whenever that’ll be!

Oh has collected some things from the in laws - he is going shopping for them so has to drop shopping on her step.. she bought things for the kids a while ago. She also lives down the road from his place of work so that’s a little different.

But to think my family should just leave it for now?

yup, leave more in the shop for everyone else to buy at half price next week.
In the current climate, you could probably get away with telling children that easter was a week later, and get discounted eggs yourself.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/04/2020 20:34

Yanbu.

We have some birthdays and I’m not expecting anything apart from something from my husband parents as we are shopping For them so will pick something up when we drop off the shopping. (From the porch - not having direct contact)
If you passed the house on your walk it would also be ok to drop off something I think.

Jeds55 · 06/04/2020 20:35

Yes, wait until it over (which will be sooner if people adhere to non-essential travel guidelines)

EnglishRain · 06/04/2020 20:37

Easter egg wise we have all agreed to keep what we bought and eat them ourselves. Still bought the same amount, just haven't swapped them!

Gatehouse77 · 06/04/2020 20:38

Eggs - we’re not doing but it’s only my (older, adult siblings we buy for).

Birthday presents - likely to be Amazon vouchers or waiting till it’s feasible.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 06/04/2020 20:39

Not essential. My daughter will only be getting an Easter egg from me, bought on our weekly shop. I'm sure my mum would love to drop one off, but she won't because she knows it's wrong. I sincerely hope that everyone else follows suit.

elliejjtiny · 06/04/2020 20:40

We have dn's birthday present and Easter egg and we will give it to her when lockdown is over. Pil have transferred money so we can buy the dc an Easter egg each from them.

livefornaps · 06/04/2020 20:41

Oh for god's sake.

TattiePants · 06/04/2020 20:47

My DM gave me the DC's Easter eggs a couple of weeks ago when it looked like a lock down was imminent. Everyone else will wait until this is over. Birthdays will either be online vouchers or again, will wait until it's over.

Leaannb · 06/04/2020 20:47

I put a stop to presents years and years ago. My children get 1 gift for their birthday and Christmas from Grandparents. They don't get gifts during the rest of the year. No one else in the family is allowed to give my children gifts

Winter2020 · 06/04/2020 20:58

I used the WhatsApp group with my family to suggest that we only buy for our own children for Easter this year. For logistical reasons of getting the eggs to each other but also because if there are supply issues we won't be the cause of some children not being able to have an egg because our children have more. Just bought them one each.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 06/04/2020 20:59

Leannbb
I’m guessing none of the isolation stuff affects you though since you only exist in the pages of a Roald Dahl novel.

CherryPavlova · 06/04/2020 21:00

We ordered a couple of IPads for my mother in laws birthday. We just had them delivered to her address. It meant we can see her and it’s easier for her to speak to the grandchildren, play games, shop etc.
Tesco didn’t deliver the Easter eggs I ordered so we’ll order chocolate from other sources. If we can’t then we can’t.

Leannb are you serious? Do you think you have a right to stop people giving gifts?

BestZebbie · 06/04/2020 21:00

Before lockdown I bought three eggs for my DS, they will come ‘from’ parents and the grandparents on each side. The eggs are all equal. Everyone has been warned not to try and send anything else. I am actually thinking of doing this every year now, to fight the constant gift escalation from one side!

Palavah · 06/04/2020 21:02

Either arrange to buy them on behalf of your relatives if you can fit it into the outings you're doing already, or arrange for later. It's all about ekeing out the interest just now isn't it?

Thisismyhappyface · 06/04/2020 21:04

@Leaannb surely you are joking? You are denying your kids and family pleasure for what purpose?!

londonrach · 06/04/2020 21:06

We eating the eggs we got this year so no exchange,

BrooHaHa · 06/04/2020 21:07

We aren't doing gifts until after lockdown. Luckily, relatives gave us Easter eggs pre-lockdown and we've no birthdays for a few months.

em90792 · 06/04/2020 21:18

My mum transferred money to purchase eggs for the boys next time I do a food shop. Makes sense! I'll just add them to my next shop whenever that is. Mother in law is older so we are dropping food shopping for her and she already had them so we exchanged. Wouldnt have if wasnt dropping stuff off for her etc. Would of suggested money or to give it a miss probably.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 06/04/2020 21:20

My local co-op has easter eggs and loads of basics on deliveroo- that might be an option

AnnaFiveTowns · 06/04/2020 21:23

I bought Easter eggs for all the kids in the family a few weeks ago before lockdown. We've since been slowly eating our way through them. Nobody outside our household will be getting any eggs this year!

Whoareyoudududu · 06/04/2020 21:24

Grin

I’ve bought my DC extra this year to make up for the loss of eggs family usually give. Also a bit of a crummy time so thought I’d try and cheer them up.

SylvanianFrenemies · 06/04/2020 21:26

@Smileyaxolotl1 😂

melissasummerfield · 06/04/2020 21:27

@ Leaannb you sound delightful.

Lynda07 · 06/04/2020 21:30

I have ordered my Easter eggs from Thorntons but they are taking a long time to come, I hope they do arrive soon.

I'll just leave a couple in porch for next door's grandchildren, my son and my cousin will have them delivered to them somehow, not a big deal if they don't get them until afterwards.

Thanks for reminding me though, I need to write my Easter cards.
