Holiday in turkey june- still going ahead?

happyandsingle · 06/04/2020 20:10

Just wanted ppls opinion as I know nobody knows for sure yet but I'm booked to go on holiday mid june what do you think are the chances of it going ahead? I've paid in full and booked it before the virus came to light so should be covered by my insurance if its cancelled.
Had no correspondence from the holiday company I've booked it with but I know it's a bit early for them to know.

Not a chance in hell

HoffiCoffi13 · 06/04/2020 22:17

Slim to none. We have flights booked for July to see my IL’s, who we haven’t seen for 3 years. The DC have been counting down on a calendar since we booked before Christmas. I can’t see it happening. Best case scenario we can move our flights to later in the year or early 2021.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/04/2020 22:20

@Kyliesgoldshorts why have you not got travel insurance? Why didn't you get it when you first booked the holiday?

SynchroSwimmer · 06/04/2020 22:38

OP, I found following the Turkish news link here useful - if you wanted to monitor as things develop

www.dailysabah.com/turkey/coronavirus-cases-in-turkey-surpass-30000-recoveries-top-1325/news

(I was brought home from Turkey early 2 weeks ago as the borders closed there)

Turkey seemed way more prepared than the UK, as the first cases emerged there in mid March they took dynamic pre-planned immediate actions, they had plans in place and their testing currently looks way ahead of ours. (They are currently delivering facemasks to every household for example)

Realistically I don’t think June will happen.

OhMargo · 06/04/2020 22:46

Realistically would anyone feel confident in a packed plane until a vaccination against CV can be given?

I do realise that many people want to see their loved ones and I understand that. But the countries you want to visit, be it for holidays or visiting family etc. may also have 14 day quarantine for a while anyway.

I wouldn't think of going anywhere abroad right now and for the foreseeable future. But I don't have family abroad, and understand the dilemma for others.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/04/2020 22:50

Sorry but no.

I've written off our holiday to Greece in May. Still have to pay the final instalment but we will get it back at some point.

Then we will have a nice nest egg to have a fab holiday somewhere in the UK once lockdown has eased. Greece can wait for another year.

thegreylady · 06/04/2020 23:07

No! I have family in Turkey and there is lockdown, most places are shut and there are police patrols.

JoeExotic · 06/04/2020 23:20

What the fuck? Seriously?

Kyliesgoldshorts · 06/04/2020 23:35

@ineedaholidaynow
I know I should’ve checked it, I had an annual policy that I thought I was covered by but it’s expired and I never got round to renewing it, it ran out in January but this had already kicked off and I thought I wouldn’t get a new policy now.
Worst case scenario for me is to book it for next year and I’ll take out new cover then when I book so all is not totally lost.

20viona · 07/04/2020 06:56

@PinkiOcelot what about everyone else’s comments? We are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic!

Ifeel1000yearsold · 07/04/2020 07:04

Definitely not but I’d just wait until they cancel it.
We have a UK based holiday in August and I’m a bit doubtful whether even thst will happen.

welldonejean · 07/04/2020 07:11

You aren't going anywhere, sorry. None of us are in the summer.

twinnywinny14 · 07/04/2020 07:13

@NotExactlyHappyToHelp I saw that has been changed, so you know what is was before?

Roselilly36 · 07/04/2020 07:18

Sorry OP but not a hope of your holiday going ahead.

StarlightLady · 07/04/2020 08:53

Reconsider in May.

Jimdandy · 07/04/2020 09:20

I don’t think you’ll get to go, but like the situation with Thomas Cook if you are due an instalment or payment then do still pay. If you don’t then they’ll deem that you cancelled the holiday. Where as if you just let things ride out and they cancel you should get your money back.

We’ve got Disneyland booked for Oct. we were booked with TC and now this feels like we’re doomed not to go!!

Least we’re all still alive though that’s all that matters.

On a general discussion note, the new “indefinite” travel ban is not helpful to the travel industry apparently, because it means, in theory that the ban could be lifted at any time so it’s hard to draw a line with cancellations etc. Where as when they did it for a month initially they could then prioritise those that were due to travel in the next months.

So it would have been more helpful to all if they did it in 3 months specific blocks.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 07/04/2020 09:26

@twinnywinny14 It was initially for a period of 30 days but I could swear I remembered hearing a date in May.

finn1020 · 07/04/2020 10:18

No chance

Lala241280 · 07/04/2020 10:37

If it’s with Jet2 they have cancelled departures up until 17th June

user1498647726 · 07/04/2020 10:42

No way, Jose. Not a chance, Vance.

Bluesheep8 · 07/04/2020 10:47

No

Mammaaof · 07/04/2020 10:55

I went to change my may holiday for September yesterday and travel agent said that they wouldn't book for sept as there is high chance planes wouldn't be flying then either, as once all these counties get rid of the virus they aren't going to want the risk of anyone coming into their country from another country Sad

Sexnotgender · 07/04/2020 11:20

My brother has rearranged his wedding from next week to October. I’m pretty doubtful about the October date too to be honest. Unfortunately it was all rearranged about a month ago before we understood the full implications. It’s in Ireland, they live in Australia.

snowone · 07/04/2020 11:27

Honestly - I think the UK will only just be thinking about gradually reducing the lockdown by then. I have several friends that work in the NHS and for local gov that think June is optimistic for even that. I think come June the focus will be on slowly re-opening things and gradually mixing the public back together. It will be a very gradual process and my hope is that schools will re-open in Sept as normal as a result of gradual relaxing of the lockdown. I honestly think that travel to foreign countries won't happen until early next year at the earliest.

Monkeynuts18 · 07/04/2020 11:32

Some of the comments on here are really unpleasant. The OP just asked a question. None of us have a crystal ball.

OP, it seems to me it’s possible but very unlikely. Initially there was talk of lifting the restrictions in summer when health services are under the least pressure and letting the virus spread, then reinstating the restrictions as flu season draws in. But I don’t know if that’s still the case (I don’t think the government knows either!)

It will obviously be catastrophic for countries like Greece if tourism season can’t go ahead, so I think we could see pressure from countries heavily reliant on summer tourism for the travel restrictions to be lifted or relaxed.

But yeah, I think it’s still pretty unlikely.

Incidentally I wonder what all the hysterical drama queens will do when the restrictions are lifted but there’s not yet a vaccine. Will you hide in your houses, keep your kids off school and refuse to go back to work until there’s a vaccine available?
