To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

MsTSwift

She shouldn't have to give it up, but be honest. The reason she wants to do it is because she enjoys it not because she has to do it.

You may not have shrivelled up but you do sound miserable as fuck.
@BusyProcrastinator - and yet you yourself sound full of the milk of human kindness. Presumably exercise is neither making you more cheerful nor more compassionate.

toobusytothink · 07/04/2020 16:53

Trust me - exercise can be like a drug. I would be damn miserable if I couldn’t do it. And I’d feel fat and horrible and really pretty crap. But of course if I had to stop I would. But i don’t so I won’t thank you very much

BusyProcrastinator · 07/04/2020 16:54

@hearhooves

Perfectly happy but not much time for people who describe mental health concerns as bla bla bla. Nor for people who think people on bicycles should be hurt.

Lucked · 07/04/2020 16:57

I don’t have a problem with it. Loads of cyclist but due to reduced traffic hardly have to wait any time until other side is clear and safe overtaking possible. Commute is still much quicker than before lockdown.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 07/04/2020 16:57

Not described mental health as bla bla bla. I was describing the people who are using mental health as an excuse.

Likewise, you've just described someone with severe physical illness as being "miserable as fuck".

stclair · 07/04/2020 16:59

I cycle to work as an NHS keyworker. Definitely would rather do that than get the tube.

I exercise at least four times a week at the gym. Use it to control my pain. How do you think I'm managing? Yet all I see on here is "I have to do it for my physical and mental health". No you don't. You want to do it, there's no has to about it.

MinnieMountain · 07/04/2020 17:03

Fair point @Hearhoovesthinkzebras we could if we had to. But OP specifically mentioned cycling. By your logic in your last post, all exercise outside the house should be banned.

toobusytothink · 07/04/2020 17:06

Ah so what you’re saying is no one needs to do it as much as you do so the rest of us should shut up because we don’t need it like you do. Tbh you don’t know us though so you don’t know what we need and what we don’t do please don’t judge

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 07/04/2020 17:06

Why banned by my last comment?

I'm not saying it should be banned am I? I said stop saying that you have to do it. Say the truth - you want to do it.

None of that is calling for it to be banned

Puffalicious · 07/04/2020 17:09

BiscuitRidiculous suggestion.

MsTSwift · 07/04/2020 17:26

Yes how wrong that anyone enjoys anything! We must all sit in misery indoors!

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 17:33

What’s wrong with saying that something’s very important for your mental health and while yes, you’d be forced to cope without it, it would make a big impact on you?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 07/04/2020 17:38

Because it is still a want and not a need, even if it's important to you or you enjoy it.

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 17:39

Not sure there’s a very clear cut difference between wants and needs when it comes to mental health.

Luckystar777 · 07/04/2020 17:42

No because people who do not have cars use their bikes to get their food shopping. What if the shop is too far to walk to and they don't want to (or can't afford) get a bus?

Very unreasonable of you, OP.

Maybe think of ways to cut down population instead, eh? Hmm

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 17:42

In that yes, you can do without it, but it is making an impact and the pieces will have to be picked up at some point.

Lockdown is very difficult for many reasons. Why wouldn’t you prioritise things that will help you through?

Fimofriend · 07/04/2020 17:44

So now some people say that they don't like cyclists? As if that is a completely normal thing to say. Get therapy!

FFS! What is next? You think it is ok to dislike prams in general? To openly confess to dislike people who wear a different kind of clothes than you. No! It is weird!.

NurseJaques · 07/04/2020 17:44

I'm a nurse and I cycle 12 miles to work and back everyday...

Sorry if that offends anyone Confused

BusyProcrastinator · 07/04/2020 17:45

I don’t really want to exercise. I’d rather be home sleeping. But I need to. Otherwise I will very soon be unable to get out of bed, unable to work.

Technically most of us could go without food for a few weeks without dying.

TheOrigBrave · 07/04/2020 17:45

Just back from 8 mile ride with my son. 1/2 on single track roads. Saw one other cyclist, one person with a dog and a couple walking on the fields.

Makes NO sense to bad it around here.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 07/04/2020 17:51

@NurseJaques... thank you. Stay safe.

Mintjulia · 07/04/2020 17:53

No.

Your need to inflict arbitrary control on people doing you no harm is worrying.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 07/04/2020 18:05

Why wouldn’t you prioritise things that will help you through

Because a lot of us have had to give up things that help our physical and mental condition.

Exercising in the gym, swimming and physio is vital for me and without them my condition is rapidly deteriorating, maybe past a point of no return, and my need for pain relief has doubled - so, I'm ok to do what works for me then, yes?

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 18:28

Because a lot of us have had to give up things that help our physical and mental condition.

Even by the standards of this site, that’s a goddamn stupid reason. Why do you want to make it a race to the bottom?

so, I'm ok to do what works for me then, yes?

Obviously not. Gyms and swimming pools have been stopped to slow the spread of the virus. Solo cycling will not spread CV and is helping people cope.

I simply cannot understand the ‘i can’t do my stuff, so for no good reason you shouldn’t be able to either’ mentality.

It’s stupid, childish and totally short sighted.

We have a duty right now to be sensible and to look after each other. Wanting to ban stuff out of petulance or jealousy is not helping anyone.
