To think cycling should be banned under lockdown?

I just had to drive to an essential medical appointment, and come across dozens of cyclists.

Why is cycling still allowed when driving is only allowed for essential travel? Surely the 1 hour exercise should be restricted to walking? If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

And yes I know a very small minority will be cycling to an essential job... but I doubt all the people I saw were doing so. Surely the rules should be the same... essential travel only.

Cycling can be a part of essential travel so it's not practical to police the distinction. Cycling is also much safer with the reduced volume of traffic on the roads creating more space for safe overtaking.

What is the coronavirus risk from solo cycling?

Custardcreamies101 · 06/04/2020 18:27

I saw at least 20 cyclists on my way to work the other day! I don’t like cyclists in general. But having so many cycle might make it more likely for accidents to happen.

catsarelifetome · 06/04/2020 18:27

There were big groups of cyclists cycling together... I doubt they all live together

The cycling is usually part of the taking exercise, not essential travel (unless travelling to work.)

The chance of a serious accident is probably relatively low with the lack of cars on the road right now.

I haven't seen any sign of anti social cycling round here. If anything it is less than we normally see - we normally have a lot of cyclists especially at weekends because of where we live.

TheoneandObi · 06/04/2020 18:28

Ummmm not sure. But so far it's not banned, and my daily exercise today was an hour and twenty minute ride round a hilly route near me. I am rural and met two other cyclists and a handful of dog walkers. Didn't break any records or bones and is helping me maintain vital cardio vascular fitness.

Quartz2208 · 06/04/2020 18:28

Nope I cycle with my daughter for exercise not only is it is pretty efficient way of exercising outside (we live around hills so can get in a leg and cardio workout) it is far easier to social distance when you are on the road. Also I avoid main roads and cycle suburban streets that should have minimum traffic

If you restrict it to walking you are pretty much putting everyone on the street at the same place.

For that reason I have noticed runners on the streets as well.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 06/04/2020 18:28

But having so many cycle might make it more likely for accidents to happen.

much less risk with fewer cars

NinetySixer · 06/04/2020 18:28

You are allowed reasonable exercise.

There isn’t a 1 hr limit on this.

Also, many people wouldn’t count a walk as sufficient exercise. A 1 hr walk is the time it takes me to get to and from the gym most days.

If the cyclists you saw were socially distancing themselves and sticking to the law of the road then it is none of your concern.

JigsawsAreCool · 06/04/2020 18:28

So many medical staff cycle to work. Less public transport etc etc. And we want people to be a physically fit as possible

devildeepbluesea · 06/04/2020 18:30

Nope not a cyclist but seems like a brilliant way to get exercise. Fewer cars means the risk of accidents is lower.

I honestly can't see how your commute is worse with a handful of cyclists than it is with hundreds of other cars.

Ohyesiam · 06/04/2020 18:30

If walking were the only exercise allowed we’d all end up obese.

LakieLady · 06/04/2020 18:30

Earlier today, I had the same thought.

I was stuck behind a cyclist for a couple of miles, on a winding country road. During that few minutes, he spat, at least 4 times. Gross, and unsanitary!

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 06/04/2020 18:30

YABU. Me and DH love our bikes, and have been cycling the 1.5 miles to the bug woodland not far from us, and been spending HOURS in there.

@catsarelifetome You should try cycling some time! You'll love it!

Lennonmc · 06/04/2020 18:30

why don’t you get your bike out and go for a ride if you feel left out? Make you feel good x

Crabbo · 06/04/2020 18:31

If the cyclist falls off or is hit by a car, that puts pressure on emergency services.

Probably don’t hit them with your car then? Not sure it’s really fair to put the onus on cyclists here.

bestcat · 06/04/2020 18:31

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 06/04/2020 18:31

Where on EARTH are people getting this 'one hour exercise limit' myth from?! Confused It's not even remotely true!

SimonJT · 06/04/2020 18:32

Walking is not exercise, it’s one step up from being comatose on the sofa.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 06/04/2020 18:32

YABU. Not for you to dictate forms of exercise. FFS. Walking bores the hell out of some people. A lot of people don't have a car and cycle as transportation.

AlCalavicci · 06/04/2020 18:32

I have chosen to cycle as my permitted exercise, Where I can I ride off road , I prefer this form of exercise as it gets the blood pumping faster so I feel better for it there are a lot less cars on the road so I think it is much safer now that during 'normal' times
I cant run for toffee so thats out .

yearinyearout · 06/04/2020 18:33

There is no "one hour" exercise limit, just another myth being put about on FB.

GulliBelle · 06/04/2020 18:33

Banning cycling would certainly fuck up the supply chain for our local dealers.

TheBouquets · 06/04/2020 18:34

Practically every cyclist in my area is cycling on the pavement. These are not children they are grown adults. They pass too close to those who are actually out for a walk. Runners are also too close to people who are walking and not taking any part in a sport. Time to get cyclists off the pavements
