AIBU to wish people would stop using flour for play dough

Just that. Some people, like me, want to cook with it. I have just worked out (correctly I think) from Facebook feeds featuring play dough recipes that this is contributes to there being no flour.

We live in the most ‘infected’ area of the whole country. So the networks of friends and neighbours are quite busy looking after very vulnerable people, ditto deliveries.

Yes, if we run out of food someone will leave some in the doorstep. But we know two whole families completely poleaxed with symptoms, my other friend is shielding her Mum, the volunteer networks are busy with elderly and disabled.

Every choice we make affects someone else at times like these.

There is quite a lot of ‘let them eat cake’ on this thread. A quantity of Potatoes that will last out to feed a family for two weeks, have rice for breakfast, maybe...

We won’t perish for the lack of a bag of bread flour (3 loaves = 6 days provision) but it could speed up the timetable over which we need someone else to divert their support from someone else or, god forbid, make an extra trip to the shops.

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 11:23

It’s because ready made play dough is more expensive, I assume?

Not everyone has access to a Tesco Superstore.

None of my local supermarkets have toys or crafts for sale.

I’m not actually making play doh btw, but isn’t the above point obvious?

Carbosug · 07/04/2020 11:26

How is that calling people bitches @cohle. I'm naming the behaviour not the person

Also, for the record I was commenting on posters whose point I agreed with but not their method of making it, not 'anybody who disagreed with' me

MamaBearOnLockdown · 07/04/2020 11:26

Just pretend the flour is being used to make cakes to stuff the kids up with. Feeling better now?

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 11:30

No you won’t. And there really are a lot of options if you’re avoiding multiple shops. Long life bread, pittas, wraps, flatbreads, those bake-at-home things, bagels. I could go on.

LonelyFromCorona · 07/04/2020 11:32

Stocks are fine. My local Tesco and Aldi had everything except for mythical hand sanitizer.

mooboy · 07/04/2020 11:37

Yanbu to wish you had flour, but wishing you could stop other people from using it - that's less defensible.
This situation has brought out the worst in a lot of people...some seem to think the world revolves around their wishes and demand that everyone listens to how they want everyone else to do lockdown...mostly if it's fun it should be banned!

CalmerViolet · 07/04/2020 11:38

Laurie we are not ‘avoiding’ shops, we are not going out AT ALL. Two members of my household have symptoms. One quite badly.

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 11:43

I'm naming the behaviour not the person

Yeah.... we all know what it really means.

LaurieMarlow · 07/04/2020 11:43

Yes, but you need food, right?

Which is why you want the flour, right?

I’m pointing out that if someone could get you a bag of flour, they could equally get you long lasting bread options.

Cohle · 07/04/2020 11:44

Carbosug

So you weren't referring to anyone specific, but for the avoidance of doubt this was the specific group of people you were referring to? Grin

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 11:46

is it responsible to buy up what there is to make play dough?

Who is buying up remaining flour stocks to make rather than using flour they already have? It takes perhaps as much as 2 cakes (probably less) and only uses this once for hours and hours and hours of play.

Flour shortages are due to more home baking and difficulties with adapting to the change from bulk commercial packaging to domestic supplies.

1981m · 07/04/2020 11:48

I am making play dough with my flour today! We have also used it for cooking. The kids love play dough and it's an activity that will take up time and they can use play dough again and again. Whereas cooking, you eat it, gone. You wanting to bake doesn't trump my wanting to make play dough, sorry.

WildfirePonie · 07/04/2020 11:49

I've already got a bag of flour in the cupboard, going to make another batch of playdough today, thanks for the reminder! Grin

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 11:49

I've just used a whopping 275g to make chocolate gingerbread which will last approximately 2 days. Perhaps less.

Mumof2202022 · 07/04/2020 11:50

I use my flour that I bought with my money to make playdoh. Far better than using the premade stuff.

mooboy · 07/04/2020 11:50

Flour shortages are due to more home baking and difficulties with adapting to the change from bulk commercial packaging to domestic supplies. Mind you it's not easy to find bulk supplies either!

Aus84 · 07/04/2020 11:54

Has anyone tried the cornflour and conditioner version? Cloud dough?
This thread has made me remember I have cornflour in the cupboard...

Scruffyoak · 07/04/2020 12:05

My daughter made a loaf of bread but it was awful so she threw it away and has started another...sorry!

OptimisticSix · 07/04/2020 12:05

I wish people wouldn't use flour for cake. Cake is revolting! Honestly YABU, if the play dough keeps the kids amused and therefore helps save some sanity then it's more than worthwhile.

SoupDragon · 07/04/2020 12:24

Don't waste it on playdough when you could make these... they are exceptionally squidgy.

It's eggs I have found harder to get.

georgialondon · 07/04/2020 12:42

Why are your flour needs more important than someone else's?

HoneysuckIejasmine · 07/04/2020 12:45

Soup thank you so much, I've ordered some after a few technical hitches. Fingers crossed it gets to us ok. You star.
