AIBU to wish people would stop using flour for play dough

Just that. Some people, like me, want to cook with it. I have just worked out (correctly I think) from Facebook feeds featuring play dough recipes that this is contributes to there being no flour.

😂 even children in world war 2 had cakes on their birthdays - bit harsh to say it's a waste (I also said that I didn't particularly care what people used it for - I'm just fed up that I cant find any).

SpillTheTeaa · 06/04/2020 14:17

It's really not a big issue. Painting pasta now is no more of a waste than it usually would be.
Stop being so judgemental.

Outtedagain · 06/04/2020 14:17

Soup. Yes and you are keeping the germ dough “to use over and over again .

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 14:18

And...? I would be keeping the child too.

HeffalumpsCantDance · 06/04/2020 14:18

Unlike baking with children?
Face it, they are grubby little beasts at the best of times, germs are standard, and you are only thinking of your stomach, rather than sympathising with a parent doing their best in a very tricky situation.

HavelockVetinari · 06/04/2020 14:18

Fun police alert! Get back in your house, don't speak to anyone even from a distance, if anything is enjoyable stop doing it immediately! We're in a LockDOWN donchaknow! HmmGrin

WtfIsThisEven · 06/04/2020 14:18

Who made you the flour police?

JasonPollack · 06/04/2020 14:18

I have loads and I'm going to go chuck a cakes worth in the bin, just for you OP.

Try your local catering supplier. 16kg sack cost me less than a tenner.

MoonBaby1 · 06/04/2020 14:19

I’m using it to paste my children to the wall so I can get some bloody work done. Where do you stand on that?

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 14:19

There are lots of ways to entertain children without wasting food which people are struggling to find in the shops! I haven't been able to get flour since this madness began

But I have a lot of flour. So I don’t see how you are my problem.

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 06/04/2020 14:19

Bloody hell, what do you need so much flour for? What is it with lock down that's made people want to bake so many bloody cakes?

You post a detailed description of the ingredients and method so the rest of us can get it done.
Are your walls painted or papered?

HeffalumpsCantDance · 06/04/2020 14:20

The salt and cream of tartar keeps the germ and mould count low.
It’s why play dough doesn’t rot.

MrsXx4 · 06/04/2020 14:20

Excellent idea! I’m going to make play doh today! Didn’t even know you could make it with flour, my boy will love this!

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 14:20

Sorry that was to @MoonBaby1 reply isn’t working :/

Octopus37 · 06/04/2020 14:20

You are a genius, seriously you have just given me justification not to do a craft project I was trying to talk myself into doing with the kids, that handprints one that is doing the rounds. I knew I would have to talk the boys into doing it, but cannot stand the time it will take or mess. You have given me ethical grounds not to do it

Chillicheese123 · 06/04/2020 14:22

My mil keeps asking us for flour from the shop and then baking massive cakes or 20 scones etc with it, usually out of her ‘sugar free baking’ book 🤢
No one is going to eat it. I’ll have a small slice out of politeness but her hygiene is questionable and going to her front door to pick up a cake is hardly essential travel.

But she’s in her 70s and really bored so we just let her get on with it. I have told her I can’t get flour a couple of times when I actually can ...
Bit like a toddler using for flour for play dough really, it’s an activity. She’s paid for it.

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 14:22

I can’t think of the name but we’re doing a family hand print one and writing quarantine 2020 on it. I also want to do individual ones for the kids.

It looks easy enough. Which means I’m going to find this really hard.

MoonBaby1 · 06/04/2020 14:22

wibblewobblejiggle it’s my simple glue, water and flour mix. Some call it turbo papier-mâché Grin

brachiosaurusdance · 06/04/2020 14:23

Eh? Germs aren’t a good idea at the moment? Well in that case neither is encouraging unhealthy eating habits from baking.

okiedokieme · 06/04/2020 14:23

There's plenty of flour in the shop here - Lidl that is. Try a different shop if the big supermarkets are out

MashedSpud · 06/04/2020 14:23

Proper play-doh smells lovely. I have 10 or 12 pots in the spare room (I needed a tiny bit for a project but could only get a multipack). I sometimes open a pot and have a good sniff.

My flour is for cooking.

FourTeaFallOut · 06/04/2020 14:24

I just got flour in my Tesco delivery today, it wasn't any fuss to get it. I'm going to try my hand at making bread for the first time. By the time I'm done the playdoh making crowd might be judging me for the waste Grin

Deux · 06/04/2020 14:24

My DC are too old for play dough but I’m tempted to make some now as an act of rebellion.

Lots of people I know are doing more baking than they usually would because they’re at home and have more time, energy and headspace to do it.

I really doubt your inability to get flour is because of people making play dough.
