AIBU to wish people would stop using flour for play dough

Just that. Some people, like me, want to cook with it. I have just worked out (correctly I think) from Facebook feeds featuring play dough recipes that this is contributes to there being no flour.

Also have kids with soya allergies. Not much choice of soya free bread in the shops at the best of times so we NEED it to make bread for our kids to eat.
Can't believe how uncaring some of you lot are about wasting food that others may need....it isn't a laughing matter

SoupDragon · 06/04/2020 18:00

it isn't a laughing matter

It's also got NOTHING to do with people making playdough!

wibblewobblejiggle · 06/04/2020 18:03

@Chippednailpolish you don't need bread.

And I don't care about your trolley. I'm doing my best to feed and entertain my kids.

Pentium85 · 06/04/2020 18:03

I do in part agree.

I've been using cornflour for recipes to free up play dough

ScandiAuntie · 06/04/2020 18:03

A pack of dried pasta is as cheap as 75p based on which brand you buy.

75p??? 75?

Mine costs 19p. 19p

You must be rolling in it. Money, not flour.

kateandme · 06/04/2020 18:08

CinderellasSecretswish i could send you send you some of ours!

AlternativePerspective · 06/04/2020 18:08

I wish. Obviously it does depend which supermarket you go to. I can’t go to Lidl as I’m restricted due to health condition. And we don’t have an Aldi here.

So I’m reliant on sainsburys as it’s the only place where I’ve been able to get a delivery slot.

DS goes out very occasionally but only to pick up my prescriptions and will drop into sainsburys while he’s there, but he also has to keep going out to a minimum because of my health.

But really, all this hysteria about people not being able to eat is what is laughable.

I think that given I don’t eat cake I’ll make the flour I just got into playdough. Grin just because I can.

AlternativePerspective · 06/04/2020 18:12

In fact I bought it purely so that someone else couldn’t have it. Grin.

Chillicheese123 · 06/04/2020 18:14

@AlternativePerspective I just read your post and thought ‘what medical conditions are exacerbated by going to Lidl, not other shops, just Lidl??’

Then I twigged that you mean it’s because they don’t deliver 😂

I need wine

scoobiedoobiedoo · 06/04/2020 18:15

My daughter made paste with flour last week for an art project she had for school, we had no paste ( thick glue), should I risked myself driving into town to buy paste rather than using a cup of flour. We were lucky that after weeks of not being able to buy flour my husband was able to get some, but I cant get yeast wich means we wont be able to make hot cross buns on Friday, they don't sell them in Germany so I cant buy them, I am a bit disappointed but oh well there are worse things in life.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 06/04/2020 18:16

You would hate me op, I made playdough with flour, and I did paper mache crafts using bog roll, and made musical instruments using rice and pasta 🤷‍♀️

Notredamn · 06/04/2020 18:16

What difference does it make to you whether a child plays with it or eats it? It's being consumed either way and still isn't yours.
Get your own. It's all relative. Someone somewhere has less than you. You'll live.

TempsPerdu · 06/04/2020 18:24

Nope, sorry OP. We have some shop-bought Play Doh here, but if I fancy making some of my own to occupy DD2 during this godawful time then I will. We also did some messy play with jelly and pasta the other day. Smile

Honestly, I think a fair few people on Mumsnet would have been very much at home in Cromwell’s England.

TonyChestnut · 06/04/2020 18:34

Some people will naturally agree with you.
Some people will disagree. Just that!

I wonder what were you expecting to happen?

9ofpentangles · 06/04/2020 18:42

I read that into the Lidl post, too. GrinI thought maybe it was dirtier or something

LizB62A · 06/04/2020 18:48

I agree, same with all these Facebook groups encouraging people to bake cakes that they don't really need just so they're not bored...

notacooldad · 06/04/2020 18:49

Just that. Some people, like me, want to cook with it. I have just worked out (correctly I think) from Facebook feeds featuring play dough recipes that this is contributes to there being no flour.
Well you are wrong! As others have said and it was reported last week, there's plenty of flour, it's just the production of bags that is the issue. It's got nothing to do with everyone suddenly doing craft activities.

This thread is bonkers!
Well now, I know people can use it for what they like, however it’s a waste of food
Don’t get me started on people painting lentils and pastaGrrr 😖

I honestly don't get this thinking. Eating is something you can do with pasta, lentils etc but they have other uses such s arts and crafts. You don't have to eat them for them to be useful. Some people may want to eat them others may want to do a project with them.
I agree with OP, I find it disgusting that people are wasting food in this way at any time, but especially now. Totally unacceptable
Why is it a waste? A cake can be eaten in seconds, it takes a while to make play dough and play with it. Some people will get pleasure from eating a cake, others will have fun making things with their kids.🤷‍♀️

Well this thread has shown who the selfish fuckers are hasn't it
Not me! I've not been baking!

Eating is vital No shit!!
All this fuss because you can't find flour to makeYorkshire puddings or cakes! Just get some Aunt Bessie's or Mr Kiplings until the packaging issue is resolved and stop wanting the kids to have fun with flour!

tallah · 06/04/2020 18:49

I've made it with flour as I didn't want to buy non essential items such as play dough and have loads of flour in. Non of your fucking business truth be told!

tallah · 06/04/2020 18:50

Also no idea how you're struggling to find flour, there's loads in our sainsburys!

MyDaughtersLeftFoot · 06/04/2020 19:07

I’m sure if you thought outside the box you could find somewhere to buy flour locally. I can’t get SWF anywhere here and we’ve been making bread because we don’t have freezer space for bread and would normally buy a loaf every couple of days but don’t want to “pop out” for just bread. So I found a company who normally supply restaurants etc and ordered some bits from them. £3 delivery and no more endless searching for flour. If you were that desperate for flour you’d have found some by now. And if you’re in Edinburgh or the surrounds I’ll happily share where I got mine from.

AlternativePerspective · 06/04/2020 19:10

I just read your post and thought ‘what medical conditions are exacerbated by going to Lidl, not other shops, just Lidl??’
Grin Can you imagine the AIBU? “AIBU to not go to Lidl as it flares up my medical conditions? Grin.

The sad fact is that in the US they do deliver. I’ve only been there once, when my parents were down in their car, and if I could shop there regularly then I would.

Outtedagain · 06/04/2020 19:12

Things I have learnt today :
Lack of flour is not due to play dough-ers but lack of packaging ... who knew?? Not I.
And people like me, that use it for
Pasta, pizza, bread, sauces, (lasagna)
Flour is not just for cakes and making chubbies! Whoever said that made me laugh 😂.
I see that I have consistently been around 26 % UR all day and been entertained even by the really over interested mean spirited posters.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 06/04/2020 19:13

I don’t see how it’s any less valid than making biscuits or someone eating more calories than strictly necessary.

Children do need to be entertained somehow. Not everyone will have loads of toys or garden.

Outtedagain · 06/04/2020 19:14

@MyDaughtersLeftFoot.... thanks I will widen my search . Not near Edinburgh but thanks
