To not want cats using my garden

temporarygate · 06/04/2020 13:18

Our neighbours cats are frequently in my garden. Last summer they kept shitting at the bottom of our slide and killing birds a our bird feeder. We installed plastic fence spikes to deter them and the neighbour knocked on our door complaining his cats might get injured and that cats have the right to roam.

We have left the spikes up which has stopped them running across the fences to catch birds but the cats continue to come in through trees at the back of the garden and now have adopted our new garden sofas. We bought some of those ultrasonic sounders things but they are not making a difference. We spent £90 on sofa covers to prevent the cats sleeping on the garden furniture but every morning when we go out the cats shoot from under the covers - this morning there’s wet cat hair all over the cushions. I bring the throw cushions indoors but not the seat as back cushions as they are huge and there’s loads of them.

I feel pissed off that I’m going to a lot of hassle and expense of buying things and covering things for someone else’s pets to use.

@RonnieBarkingMad you were the one who suggested the trap and said you would keep a cat for however long it takes and that you wouldn't feed it - well apart from the ham. You are the one advocating animal cruelty, not me. I am now beginning to think you're being deliberately goady so I am no longer going to reply to you.

Sux2buthen · 06/04/2020 19:37

Loathe cats. My dog sees them off, it's great. Bloody things

mumwon · 06/04/2020 19:38

re the cv the tiger caught it off the keeper as stated on news there is NO proof that it can happen the other way round (for goodness sake we will be going back to the plague time & killing of cats next!)

RonnieBarkingMad · 06/04/2020 19:39

@atticuslovesscout goady how? For sharing an opinion I have?

I suggested a humane trap to trap the cat, because it is causing OP issues.

I was asked if I would feed it. I said I wouldn’t buy cat food for it, because I don’t own cats and wouldn’t spend money on pet food for a pet that wasn’t mine.

I said the ham comment because another poster mentioned it and now people have turned it on me saying that I imprison cats and feed them ham.

I am now beginning to think you're being deliberately goady so I am no longer going to reply to you.

Well okay, then.. don’t Confused I didnt ask you to reply to me in the first place

Shefliesonherownwings · 06/04/2020 19:43

@steppemum- have I read that correctly, you drop cats in a bucket full of water?! That’s incredibly cruel if so. By all means use a water pistol but dropping it in a bucket of water is nasty

@TitusP I'm so glad I'm not the only one who read the post by @steppemum and was horrified. Absolutely disgusting.

OP just make friends with them, cats are ace. Grin

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/04/2020 19:45

I hate that some cat owners take no responsibility at all for the damage their pets cause. Its selfish and ignorant.

I would persevere with all humane methods and if you see it happen return the crap back to the owners garden. Then get a dog. Worked for us.

Cohle · 06/04/2020 20:22

What damage though?

Lots of animals shit in your garden. My cat doing so isn't somehow ruining a sterile environment. I had no idea people were so insane about cats Grin

MsTSwift · 06/04/2020 20:42

Shocked at the massive foxes I have seen recently. What do all the frothers do about them shitting in their gardens?

hesgotit · 06/04/2020 20:57

@RonnieBarkingMad you've suggested humane trap and then holding the cat essentially hostage, you certainly do sound barking mad!

Concerned12345 · 06/04/2020 21:01

Grow thorny climbing roses all around, natural barbed wire (and I have a cat) xxx

RonnieBarkingMad · 06/04/2020 21:15

What exactly is so outrageous about suggesting a humane trap compared to dunking them in buckets of water, throwing rocks near them to scare them, and suggesting growing thorns so they get hurt when they try and climb?

PineappleDanish · 06/04/2020 21:21

Cats are disgusting creatures. I loathe and detest them. Luckily there aren't many round this way. I hate the attitude that just because some people want to have these animals as pets, the rest of us have to put up with their pets in our gardens.

Urgh.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 06/04/2020 21:27

These threads are so depressing

The cat loving loons delight in their little shit monsters' right to roam

Everyone else has to foot the bill to stop the fuckers shitting all over their gardens.

Chilli powder OP. Or a metaphorical kick up the arse.

youarelikelytohaveascrewloose · 06/04/2020 21:36

I think to really hate something so much, you have to have issues yourself. Especially hating a harmless animal.

Rosebel · 06/04/2020 21:43

Gosh if you are this wound up about a cat what would you do if wildlife came in to your garden? By the way you can't just trap a cat and starve it unless you want to be charged with animal cruelty. Also disgusted by people throwing things at cats.
Please do share the secret of how to train a cat? All you non cat owners clearly know

ludicrouslemons · 06/04/2020 21:53

At least it's not wild boars

Australia has the right idea, you can keep a cat but I read that they are considering making it illegal for the cat to go outside?

Loathe and detest..... it's a cat not a rapist. What a ridiculous way to talk about a small animal. What do you use for genuinely bad awful people?

rubberoftheband · 06/04/2020 21:59

You've read that they are considering, that's useful, they may decide too! I can't see it every actually happening, but maybe you could link the research?

mumwon · 06/04/2020 22:39

cats in Australia are an invasive creature & feral cats who have escaped into the wild kill native creatures - we have native form of cats & they have lived in this country for eons - literally - do they kill birds (mostly only fledglings who fall immaturely from nests or slow ones! Cats are as likely to kill mice & even on occasion kill or see off & scare rats - farmers have traditionally used them for precisely that - other birds like owls & hawks etc are Justas likely to kill small birds & much more successfully which do you think starlings do those wonderful murmurations in the air? As for poo - birds poo (hang a sheet out in summer!) & soil is basically worm poo Grin one of the best ways apparently to scare off cats (cure worse than complaint!) is to get lion poo apparently that scares off! Grin

MsTSwift · 06/04/2020 22:43

If you cat haters suddenly had a kitten you would love it 😁 I didn’t particularly like cats for the above reasons but got talked into it now I have switched sides entirely and am a cat slave...

Also dealt with our tedious issue of mice in kitchen (old house raised floorboards) our teenage girl cats efficiently despatch

RettyPriddle · 06/04/2020 22:47

Get a dog. Solves the problem overnight. 🐕‍🦺

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 06/04/2020 22:56

If you do not want cats in your garden, you have to take the active steps to prevent them getting in

alternatively, catch a virus, then you won't have to worry about it.

I love these threads, they’re hilarious Grin

Maudiejames · 06/04/2020 23:04

I wonder if cat owners who let their cats out, have litter boxes in their homes.
