To not want cats using my garden

temporarygate · 06/04/2020 13:18

Our neighbours cats are frequently in my garden. Last summer they kept shitting at the bottom of our slide and killing birds a our bird feeder. We installed plastic fence spikes to deter them and the neighbour knocked on our door complaining his cats might get injured and that cats have the right to roam.

We have left the spikes up which has stopped them running across the fences to catch birds but the cats continue to come in through trees at the back of the garden and now have adopted our new garden sofas. We bought some of those ultrasonic sounders things but they are not making a difference. We spent £90 on sofa covers to prevent the cats sleeping on the garden furniture but every morning when we go out the cats shoot from under the covers - this morning there’s wet cat hair all over the cushions. I bring the throw cushions indoors but not the seat as back cushions as they are huge and there’s loads of them.

I feel pissed off that I’m going to a lot of hassle and expense of buying things and covering things for someone else’s pets to use.

This thread brings back memories of my friends mum when I was in my teens. She became obsessed with cats in her garden it was all she could talk about. I was indifferent to cats but just remember thinking what a total nutter she was. A cautionary tale! Some people get like this about parking too

Update:

The hairy fuckers are still leaving white fur all over my sofa
The super soaker I bought is shite.
I’ve ordered a load of those survival foil blankets to put over the seat cushions hoping that they don’t like this. Estimated delivery date is two weeks
I’ve not captured it and fed it ham but I am watching Tiger King so anything could happen

Are any of the cat totally white OP? It's just that totally white cats are very often profoundly deaf.

This might explain why giving them a nice friendly talking to hasn't worked? Do you know sign language? Smile

temporarygate · 08/04/2020 19:42

@bluebeck I know BSL but can’t do that as need both hands for the water pistol

@temporarygate I have two cats. Is there a cover on the sofa? If so put some random bits underneath to make it lumpy. It stops my cats getting comfy and they tend to give up. Another option would be to drape a plain (bed) sheet on the top so you can just remove it when you want to use the sofa. Not ideal I know, but if you’re not there to shoo the cats, they’ll just sleep there anyway.

My neighbour also hates cats and she gives our ones a spray with the hose now and again. She once told me one of them still just sat there and refused to budge, she was half annoyed/half impressed when she told me. I also had to laugh last year when they spent bloody ages installing chicken wire on the roof of their shed on a scorching day last year to then see my cat carefully walk across it and then stop to clean her vagina in the middle 😂. We do get on well and she regularly tells me how much she hates cats but has come to accept that there isn’t much she can do. We have 2 litter trays in our garden to encourage them to not go in next doors garden and she said that she has seen an improvement. Maybe you can ask them to put one in their garden? Are you sure it’s always next doors cats? I ask as there are normally a lot in every area.

I’m also glad you didnt catch it and feed it ham as suggested (what the hell is wrong with some people??).

Crookshanksthecat · 08/04/2020 19:53

Why is your super soaker shite?
You need to get one that shoots a good distance, fill it up with icy water and then be patient.

temporarygate · 08/04/2020 19:57

@ilikebigbuttsandicannotlie

Yes a cover but they are getting underneath it and then up onto the cushions. It’s not the rattan sort with a solid base so they can walk underneath freely.

They go on the shed roof and sunbathe which I find cute.

Another neighbour asked them about a litter box but got a strange response - we are civil with them but they are quite odd and they have had feuds with a few other neighbours so we think it’s pointless discussing anything with them.

I think I’m probably biased as growing up our cats had an enclosure and were never allowed to roam as my parents were terrified of them being hit by a car. I always saw this as normal so the idea that people let cats roam the streets and bother others because legally they can seems off to me.

I'm not even going to say what is do to anyone who trapped my cats or dropped them in buckets of water

temporarygate · 08/04/2020 19:59

@Crookshanksthecat I got the two for £15 ones in argos and it isn’t very powerful - dh collected it from sainsbos when he did the shopping, I wish I’d got a better one

Try used coffee grinds OP. Ok so not everyone uses cafetière coffee these days but it's worth buying a cheap bag of ground coffee, soaking it and then you sprinkle bits of it anywhere they roam. Maybe a small path that the might use to get to your outdoor sofa?

They hate getting it stuck in their paws and it's a smell they don't like. They trample it back into their owners house (boom!) and it's a relatively inexpensive deterrent that just washes away (or blown away on a warm day once it's done it's job.

I had lovely new raised beds at my old house with fresh soil that my neighbour's mog used to use ah his private toilet. A couple of weeks of this every few days and he didn't come back in a hurry

bluebeck · 08/04/2020 20:01

Fair enough Grin but I really think you should give it a go!!!

BraveLittleDragon · 08/04/2020 20:04

Really disgusted by the number of people who don't look after their pets in this thread.

I have serious anaphylaxis to cats - thankfully our neighbours with cats have cat proofed their own gardens.

Your pets, your problem. Not your neighbours.

mooboy · 08/04/2020 20:06

Used to try to grow food - found too many cat poos in the soil, tried all sorts to stop it and eventually gave up...it seems cats have the right to go anywhere!

dementedma · 08/04/2020 20:07

I really do sympathise with those who are annoyed with other people’s cats in their gardens but today I visited my mum who is 85 and isolated due to Corona. She has a rescue cat which doesn’t stray very far, but does visit nearby gardens of one or two houses. Mum was in tears today as she had heard the neighbour in front swearing about “that fucking cat” and threatening to kill it next time it came in the garden.
Mum is scared now that the cat will be hurt or killed. She tries to keep her in but when the door is open (bungalow) the cat will sometimes run out. No objection to a water pistol, but please don’t hurt these animals, or threaten to

Mlou32 · 08/04/2020 20:09

Cats do have a legal right to roam however if my cats were destroying neighbours belongings, then I would have the decency to at least replace things that had been destroyed.

temporarygate · 08/04/2020 20:15

@Mlou32 they aren’t destroying my things. It’s just inconvenient as I have bought covers to keep the sofa clean but they are getting under them so I have to clean them each time before we can sit.

I have hay fever, dust and pet hair allergies which is why we don’t have any pets now. But I’m already sneezing when we go out from the hay fever so I can’t say the cat hair makes any difference.
